i have never used controller to play Bioware games, or games in general except Soccer games long time ago so please help me understand this. i didn't notice it when i first watched the video. At one point (maybe more than once but i took this screenshot) the UI enlarges and we can see the buttons For what i understand it seems it's possible to use all 3 commpanions' abilities in real time "just" pressing R1, R2 and the four directions. Does this seem possible for you? i wonder if i have to press a button to enlarge the UI first or these hotkeys always work
i also see there is no hotkey for the ultimate and the shield

Shields do more damage than I expected. Note the extra "bounce" as well. Notice that it looks like you can hide your Armor as well as your Helmet. I would think hiding your helmet would be a Settings menu option. To me, that "Eye" symbol might be indicative of the Transmog system. It's a common used in other games with said feature, most notably Assassins Creed.

i also see there is no hotkey for the ultimate and the shield Shield throwing seemed to be done via holding block to charge it.

I wish Veilguard offered something like a “training area” to test out abilities, builds and playstyles. In DAI, one good thing about MP is that it let you see and feel out different kits with abilities, passives, plan out builds… gave us a broader understanding, awareness and quickness in combat, could help players really like git gud with the game. Shepard also had a weapon range thingy. You know, as opposed to choosing / discovering all of these different abilities in-game without the full scope, regret an ability you chose, respec… yeah, I think a training area in the Lighthouse could be super beneficial!

i also see there is no hotkey for the ultimate and the shield Given that companions have three abilities, I think R2 and R1 simply trigger one of those abilities, with the directional buttons triggering the other fours, without any combination being needed.

I've been attempting to gather my thoughts, but man I just don't know how I feel. I guess, I'll just go the good, not sure, and the bad.
The good
I love the hair physics. There was one shot where the hair started to wrap around her head from both sides. It was fantastic.
The fire particle effects look great as the fire feels alive.
Presumably Ghil's face in the clouds is dope. Shout out to Hrungr for catching that.
I love the shield audio.
The parry looks and feels really nice. That will probably be my favorite thing to do, but I wonder if you can parry bosses.
Not sure how I feel:
Runes... similar to Masterworks in DAI, they just don't have any rules. Granted, Dragon Age has never really had a proper magic system, but now with runes doing things we've never seen before just breaks my immersion. Especially now that runes can be activated like a skill, they seem like a crutch to force complexity instead of designing more interesting class skills. I guess, you're probably only able to activate the runes because of the elven artifact.
The Bad
I find it really lame you don't actually throw the shield.
The class skills just seem basic from what I've seen so far. Like the chain pull, cool we had that Inquisition. How about now, let us reactive the chain pull as we pull the enemy, then Rook does a spin or something to redirect the momentum of the pull and throw the enemy somewhere. Like at a group of enemies.
The overuse of visual effects. When the warrior ends the combo with a shield attack, some weird wind vfx happens and blows the enemy away before Rook even swings the shield. Or, Rook will freeze in the middle of the shield swing animation, then the VFX light will hit the monster, and then Rook will unfreeze and finish the animation. I suspect the gameplay animation coding is wonky, so Bioware is attempting to hide it with VFX.
The animation is just wonky. When the Warrior does that jump attack, they jump up and then their animation freezes in the air as they Mary Poppins glide to the enemy, come straight down, then unfreeze and finish the animation. There is also a lot of weird foot sliding going on. For example, that roll goes a ridiculous distance, and the foot sliding is very obvious.
The environment art isn't great, it just looks ok. In comparison, Adamant castle in Inquisition has more detail than what I'm seeing here. However, that one shot when you open the door and see the gryphon statue in the fog was dope.
Still hate the green healing pots.

At a glance also I’d say Warrior & Rogue abilities seem a bit too flashy for my tastes - I like the old school flashy mages with their spells, warriors and rogues being just highly skilled combatants, no need for all these bursts of color… the green, the yellow, orange, it gets to be a bit too much going on, visually (IMHO).

you may have read what i wrote before i edited but the one you quoted is already corrected by me. i saw there is no "down" direction so i understood R1 and R2 were assigned to the ability.
I also understood that it must be necessary to use the button that shows all these hotkeys because without it, the 4 directions buttons are doing something else: right is to take heal, down i don't know (it's the sword close to the heal), while left is on the rune, possibly to change the active rune, while the triangle is to activate it.

But as someone who loves this franchise everyone who has worked on this game deserves raises. They have taken someting I love and really look to have improved upon it. Did you have the same thoughts before DAI released? now that's an interesting question. In large part because my perception of the franchise was vastly different back then. Not sure of the exact time line involved think I got through Origins and 2 beforehand...but Inquisition was the first DA game I pre-ordered mostly on faith and the strength of its marketing campaign. And Inquisition was the first DA game I loved and remains my favorite game all time. So when i talk about my love it's because of Inquisition in the first place...and to emphasize seems a lot of improvements have been made in systems, scope of story, and companion design. Some things seem weaker of course and ultimately I'll render my final judgements for the game itself but the more of my questions that get answered in a positive the more excited I am.

Like, half of the time attack animation didn't connect with enemy, attack special effect did. This time only shield attacks were like that, tho. At least i didn't notice it with sword attacks and abilities. And ultimately the most important thing is how good (or well, bad) combat feels to play. And it might not even be as noticable during gameplay as it is when you watch someone else play. Other than that, i'm pleased with combat animations in this video. Rogue's animations looked "floaty", but both mage (at least based on that short NVidia showcase) and warrior look fine to me for the most part.

The face/statue we see in the first fight with the darkspawn is getting my attention. It doesn't look like Andraste with that jawline, and I don't have a great image of Ghil's mask to say with any certainty whether that's her or not. The downturned shape of the mouth looks pretty similar on the image of Ghil. Plus, it's her archdemon there, so it follows that it's her face. Who else would be so full of themselves as to put their giant face in the sky?

Also it looks like companions can get hit. It looked funny tho, because Davrin made a really weird 180 degree turn after he got hit and then reacted to being hit.

Other thing worth noticing is on further rewatches the bit in the bottom left hand corner seems to point to the situanal paseives available at one time. Vahalla did similar I believe and ultimately I approve but also seemed to be getting a little crowded.
Speaking of mob density seems high which is not unexpected so we'll see how that goes especially when comparing it to Inquisition. Wonder if this is just something for the quest since darkspawn, maybe main story area, or if indicitive.

yeah seems like despite classes being a thing seems magic like stuff is really leaking into the other classes and non mage characters. And not just purely in presentation either. Rogue Rook in the gameplay demo shot lighting called static discharge. Warrior Rook has an ability called Spectral Bulwark. One of Lucanis's ability looked like it had a lightning bolt, we have his wings. And warrior Rooks ultimate looked like she was summoning a firey meteor storm from the sky. Given they are sticking to classes it is an interesting design choice. Right, everyone's a bit of a mage now, by the looks of it. We'll see how it goes...
