Quick question on the preview and other videos: Has anyone seen a life bar for the companions? I didn't see in any footage released so far. Do companions have it? Is it hidden? Are in the portraits? Their portraits. It seems they turn red.

It's similar to Mass Effect, the portraits become a dark shade of red as they take damage. You just don't see the portraits all the time in Veilguard.

I didn’t like or finish Andromeda, but I am willing to give the next Mass Effect game a chance. What I am looking for is a mission-based game with a pc I like to play. I am happy they are moving to Unreal, so the characters will look good. Although I am mixed about Veilguard because of what they did to mage combat and the art style for characters, I hope it does well enough so that the next Mass Effect can come out. I can’t see Veilguard doing as well as BG3, though. That game was outstanding. For Veilguard I want to see the conclusion of Solas’s story arc. The gutting of mage gameplay really dampens my enthusiasm for future Dragon Age games, though. I am currently more optimistic about the Mass Effect series. I know this is more opinion based then some of our other conversations but honestly bioware characters have never looked better. Like by far and away. The only one that has looked consistently off has been Emmrich. Otherwise both DA and ME has always had pretty cartoony or plastic looking characters. Inquisition they started to look like people but the tech wasn't quite there yet, Andromeda had its issues, and now Veilguard is producing the best looking cast that BioWare has ever done. Even the Rooks look amazing. All done with Frostbite and all that progress is being thrown out because a lot of people are pitching a fit, I hope BioWare can recover.

The art style isn't my favorite of the series, but only re: icons, UI and stuff... I prefer things a little more clean and minimalistic, but eh, I'll get over it. Plus, the UI is customizable. As far as character design and graphics, I agree with you. The environments have always been beautiful with Frostbite, now the characters, too - still stylized to a degree, but this is Dragon Age. I like it a lot, and appreciate the improvements that have been made.

Yes, definitely a big difference of opinion. Emmrich looks by far the worst, but all the companions look cartoony to me. Not what I would expect from a 2024 AAA game. It is very surprising to me Bioware chose that style. Maybe leftover from when it was a multiplayer game, or trying to save money?

Y'all are missing out on this chick: She's all the DA:TV content I'll ever need. Thank you, algorithm! Just, a goddamn star! Her spontaneity is so refreshing, she cracks me up, her comments are off-the-cuff, as opposed to like some influencer reading from a script and kissing BW's @ss like a mf'n robot (*snores*) and being disingenuous... she's a DA fan, but keeps it real. She's exactly who we need in that High Council, mayhaps, even helming the next Bioware game. The Joan of Arc of our generation! And you know, I'm gonna bug the crap out of Mike Gamble on X to send her a code or something for early access, so we can get her review. Make sure to show her some love, like her videos and subscribe if you dig her videos, too. #WomenSupportingWomen

The Problem Bioware have is 1 mediocre game and 1 bad game (that they cut instaed on reparing it). MEA isn't Biowares problem DA2 was understand and the next game was better. But with Anthem, players have lost their faith in Bioware. If they would have make a CP2077 or no mans sky, than we would sit in a better spot.
And i agree today the haters are really strong. Even if i can't understand why you would put so much enery hating something instaed of finding something you would love to support.
If Bioware made a Cyberpunk or No Man's Sky on their release days, that would've killed the company. I think you haven't understand what i mean.
Anthem was their Cyberpunk or No Man's Sky, but both games where saved with a lot of work. Winning back the fans. Anthem was cut. So they don't win back the fans.

I love my youtuber that have a more mature way of speaking and clean and minimalistic aren't things i want from my game UI. I tried but i can't watch her. Their are many youtuber that aren't speaking positive of the game and got to play the game. Wait for the 19th. And a script helps sometimes to get out what you want to say. So i can't find anything negative on that.

Earthy, I appreciate a woman that can cuss. She pretty much sums up my feelings on the Qunari. Terrible design.

I haven’t played all the games you mentioned, but Fable 3 came out about 14 years ago and so probably isn’t the best game for Veilguard to look like. From the short trailer the upcoming Fable game looks like it might have more realistic graphics. Even if not, Fable has a very different tone from Dragon Age, and I don’t think it’s a good thing for Dragon Age to look like Fable.

The point is there's more to art style of AAA games than purely photorealism, not that Dragon Age will have a similar tone to one game cherry picked out of the multiple I mentioned. And I specifically mentioned multiple types of games because art style =/= tone. Dishonored is a very dark satire; Nintendo games are narratively light, gameplay focused experiences. You can have a spectrum.

I saw three Qunari (not including Taash) in the video and they all look terrible. It seems less like just one person made an awful looking one in the CC for the mage gameplay and more like they all look like that. The Qunari look absolutely dreadful. A lot of folks were saying this was just the editor's bad creations but theres problems with that defence. There's an eleven custom character that looks solid, which hints the created Qunari are the best that could be accomplished. There's also a Qunari shopkeeper who has that horrible new gigantic forehead design.

The main issue seems to be the forehead area, not even that it’s big (actually kinda cool that it is), but the fact that it’s waaay too smooth. If they added some ridges/roughness coming down from the horns and gradually fading as it gets closer to the face, that’d help, me thinks. But then they’d need to do the same with Taash (or would they?), which I don’t think they’d want to.

I know this is more opinion based than some of our other conversations but honestly bioware characters have never looked better. Like by far and away. The only one that has looked consistently off has been Emmrich. Otherwise both DA and ME has always had pretty cartoony or plastic looking characters. It is very surprising to me Bioware chose that style. Maybe leftover from when it was a multiplayer game, or trying to save money? It's fine to have a difference of opinion on a specific style (I personally quite like what Bioware did with DAVe), but I really don't understand the "expectations from a 2024 game". What are the 2024 game supposed to look like? ...All of them be hyper-realistic? Because I have a feeling that's where it's going judging from your comments, and all I have to do is sigh - in a moment in time where animated features finally stop all looking like Pixar/Disney and people start experimenting with exciting new styles and their movies finally *look like themselves*, why can't AAA games NOT adhere to hitting a certain level of realism??? Like... animation and games are a medium where we can do so much more than realism, so don't you find it a little daunting that AAA games of late start to look quite same-y, specifically due to the pressure to do realism, that many devs cite as the reason for bloated budgets, stupid graphic requirements and unoptimized games? And let's face it - Dragon Age was never particularly hyper-realistic to begin with, and now we know that once they can actually do hyper-realism it turns out that stylization of past DA games wasn't just a result of technical limitations, but conscious effort. And I quite like that they're trying to do their own thing, IMO to the benefit of the industry. Another thing, only lightly related - I'd protest against calling anything that is even lightly stylized as "cartoonish", but I really hate it when people use it as a pejorative word. As if a "cartoon" - or anything that is stylized - is somehow inherently worse, or not something that should be used in a story with darker undertones (which hasn't been true at least since the 1980s. Alan Moore anyone? Art Spiegelman? Gaiman's "Sandman" especially, given that I see things that were likely inspired by it in DA). Gotta admit, as a comic and animation nerd I kinda hoped we've grown out of the mindset that cartoons are only for children.

Hyper realism is so boring now and days, what's wrong with exaggerating things a little? It's fiction, there's nothing wrong with having a little fun. Personally, I'm getting a little tired of the Sony style hyperrealstic aesthetic.

It's also worth noting that a grounded art style doesn't equate to grounded writing or directing. Arcane's first act is fairly grounded overall; contrast this with BG3, which is much more embellished. A lot of the acting felt more typical to theater than what you'd expect out of media striving for realism, such as The Wire or The Sopranos. None of these are bad--in fact, most would argue all of these are quite good--they're just different lenses to express narrative, theme, character, etc.

I like stylized and even animated art, cartoons… actually like, a lot. I also enjoy realism, when it’s well done.
Games and films toeing the line between stylized and realistic, however - it’s, one misstep, and we’re entering uncanny valley territory. And that, no one likes. It can get bizarre real quick.

This is it 100%. Here's hoping they have options in the CC. I think Inquisition did 🤔 I've recently made a comment under one of Derek Wilk's Twitter comments about the qunari where I basically said that wanting to create a rougher qunari is fine, but complaining before we saw CC and all available options ain't cool - and he liked that comment. I agree with you in regards to the CC, but also, I believe it’s a fair concern when at least one other Qunari (Treviso merchant) was shown with the same apparent “issue” - regardless of the narrative of the IGN person having purposefully made a “baby-faced” Qunari, that does not represent the entirety of options. Maybe it won’t represent the entirety of options for the Qunari… at launch. After such a bad reaction to it and all the complaints. Maybe those option (to make fiercer, more rough-looking Qunari) were always there. We’ll never know… 🤷♀️ I’ll repeat: I don’t really care at the end of the day, it doesn’t affect me that much, personally (never played Qunari, nor do I want to). The criticism, after a while it was blown waaay out of proportion, couldn’t agree more. But some of it was valid, and came from a genuine place from players and fans of the franchise, just like you and me.

Wait for the 19th. I hope the people that have the chance to play the game can say more about it.

Personally, I'm getting a little tired of the Sony style hyperrealstic aesthetic. Hyper realism always seems to have a hayday whenever the technology makes a big jump. "Oh look how realistic this latest gen of consoles/newest enginge/etc looks". But then we remember that has limited value, because if we want realism we can just look at our boring ass real life objects and people. Or watch regular ass movies or TV. Part of the fun of the medium is that it is not bound to or limited to realism, but can do so much more. And this is a fantasy game for crying out loud- if realism is so important, why play a game with dragons and wizards and elves and shit?
