"It sounds like you just had a religious experience." -My wife. "I think I just did." -Me. So that is a wrap on Dragon Age the Veilguard and I feel so drained because I had some prepared thoughts, of course, but now I am not sure if I can think about many of them. But I will say on one note that this game's RP continued to A. grow on me and B. be a weird case. Now as I have said I do believe that one can dislike something without a very logical reason for doing so. And this is the case with this game's RP in a lot of ways because I don't like it...in full...its not horrible. But its a bit of a step down in some ways to. But I continue to remain unsure as to whether its the VA for Rook, the auto dialogue, or something. I say this though to say that one of the best things this game has done is 'stoic Rook.' In DA 2 had great RP but its options were very bi polar and along a wide variety of stuff, though maybe this let Hawke come off as the stronger personality...but stoic Rook does have a certain degree... a certain echo of professional Ryder and it was very fun to play that character that is more along the lines of direct and calm. And maybe this is the problem to but Jeff Berg...grew on me to...but some of his line delivery towards the end there was pretty good. "Anger" Wasn't just a raging alcholic but some of it was quite subtle. So yes it worked. And more of this game I played the more I am convinced that someone on the staff had to have watched Babylon 5 and then Doctor Who. There were some very hmm references here and there that was dropped during the endgame that felt rather on point. This game certainly did end up reminding me a lot of Babylon 5 in the end to. Kind of on the RP note I...I know this is cheating in a way but my headcanon for my Rook also really helped out here. Find it funny in a way that in the end so much of Rook's own 'character arc' was just shoved into the last few minutes but it was enhanced by who I had him be going into this. Made it feel real personal. And well might feel like a cheat but also is always the power of RPGs...to make these characters your own. Afterall I did that with *my Shepard*. IMO probably BioWare's weakest protag in many ways and even in an RP sense...but my own effort I put into mine makes the character feel so awesome. The combat continued to click with me. Continued to have conversations in my head as I made my way through the ending. 'Davrin!' *Davrin lets out a battle cry.* "Bellara go I'll take out the guy across the way." Things like that. More then a couple of Arrow scenes were going through my head during this and the episode I watched tonight..team work makes the dream work. The One where we end the gameSo a bunch of stuff did happen throughout this entire seqeunce that sort of *had* to happen in order to get things going. Though it was amazing that it never occured to me or the characters within the game...
Elgar'nan is the god of night and day...so he basically just kick started the Eclipse early and kick started the events of the game so we didn't have a month...and yet Oliver still had his beard. Think given that the gods can live for thousands of years or are immortal even he was just doing it to show off.
But with that on the way we rallied to get to tear stone island...by ourselves.
And well you know how you get someone to make a very important choice that will have huge moral implications? By not letting people know you are making it. Like this is the usual BioWare way of going about and doing things. Keep this in mind for later.
Must say that this is one of the best pieces of level design that BioWare has ever done in their history. From a design perspective in a few ways this was probably better then the bits in Minrathous. Because this game has done forced perspective really well in so much of its content. More on that in a moment here but the friggin fog man and having to fight darkspawn in the fog and not quite being able to see the Darkspawn moving around. And then Ghil floating through that fog like a friggin shark was some of the coolest visuals in the entire series just perfection. Then with her boss fight to, another really unique set piece here as Ghil imprisoned the entire team and forced Rook to fight her alone. Took me a while to figure out how to do it.
Oh and forgot to mention Neve getting sucked through that blight red Eluvian had me shook.
But yeah here is where it happened. Where the crows came home to roost. I didn't even know that I had made the choice but I do remember thinking at the beginning it would be so funny if this ended up being the choice...the choice I knew was coming...because I got spoiled to it. But because this was BioWare I expected some grand telegraphed chocie of sacrifice. But I do remember it is funny because I chose Harding to hold the line so thought 'haha it would be so funny i fall my choices came home to roost and I keep on getting her hurt.'
Welp.
That ended well. I friggin bawled during it though because well...got Harding killed. And while. Fuck I was going to sacrifice Davrin had it been presented as a 'grand sacrifice' type situation but now knowing it I don't think I would make another choice with Oliver anyways. Because it was logical she would lead the second team. But she still stood up bravely and fought Ghil'anain to the last. Which gave Lucanis the opprotunity he needed to end her fully. But she paid the ultimate sacrifice for it. You don't really know how much you care for a character I think until you are faced with their death because this got me so very emotional and I thought she was a little 'bland' at times. Choking up a bit now.
But then the hits just coming because panic alert I was also very nervous I got Neve killed because didn't level up her bond...which had terrible implications for the rest of my party. And then while I was still recovering from this, worried about Neve, worried about everyone else...I was spoiled to it...but I think how they handled it was brilliant because they almost anticipated this. Solas traps me in the Fade because of my regrets...my Rook's...and then reveals that Varric is dead.
Then the team gets me out because that's not thematic at all...turns out I was stuck in there for weeks. All the companions had their piece to say and they all mentioned their personal missions, do wonder if it would've gone any different had we not solved their issues and could Hezenkoss or Isseya have shown up? At the very least our allies would've been gutted in the face and unable to deal with things.
And Bellara had a full on romance scene, we told each other we loved each other...and we got naked. Didn't see the scars or the tats I gave Oliver but you know what...I am content. Her romance is just so wholesome and really reminds me of my relationship with my wife in so many ways. *sniff*.
Then the pure cinematic bliss started in a way. Rook starts moving pieces on the board and we see it in real time in the game as we move. We make our choices as to who does what and who goes where, think I made a lot of obvious choices, especially to keep my party of Bellara and Davrin with me...who essentially did become my A team in the end. It was a bit odd because then most of these decisions were crossed off pretty quick...a lot of these cutscenes got realllllyyy long towards the end. And this play session took me a lot longer then I would've thought was going to take too so I got pretty tired.
And still getting choked up!
For half a second there this reminded me of Priority Earth but the game had invested me so I was willing to give it a shot. But then the next big bit here. Solas joins us! As a mage. He battles through the streets of Minrathous (heh) with us in tow and him and the three of us make quite the party as he is a powerful mage just knocking bodies aside but not feeling *too* powerful. Somehow this game always managed to hit the perfect balance with making the gods feel powerful but not *too* powerful.
Then he turns into the Dreadwolf and it srevealed that Neve has been plugged in as a Blight intelligence. So yey she's alive...but Blighted.
Solas tells us here that the Veil will not come down by his hand. Oh the irony. And Neve makes a lot of cryptic statements about the state of the place.
Ugh sometimes these do sound like a summary but I think its important for context...
So at the end though here Morrigan shows up. The Inquisitor shows up. And Neve lets us in the big secret of the hour...one more fan theory was right, one more that I thought was actually confirmed earlier but its confirmed in full here. Solas bound the bodies of the Evanuris to the Fade. They die, it comes down. 'The Veil will not come down by my hand'.
Then Morrigan tells me I am the true Champion of the Fade, ironic that, and off we go to make one more Suicide Mission escue choice.
The last set piece was again pretty good, The Elgar'nan boss fight reminded me of Corypheus and was quite...intense...despite the advantages that I had. Though watching the Dread pupper get into it with Luscan was terrific, kind of like the Hound and the Mountain in a way. And MVP Neve came to the rescue taking on the Blight and overpowering Elgar'nan at the last.
Must say though that the highlight of the fight was when Elgar'nan did that trick and isolated Rook. Taunting him about his failures. Even twisting his victories. Based on headcannons and what not I could easily imagine that Rook felt this every word...I even felt this. The theme of regret, kind of in the games credit, I don't think it had as heavy of a focus it as it could have but then this let them actually do sub themes...but it really came up in the end game. And given that I someties...well lack confidence...felt like Elgar'nan was talking to me at times. Just pure perfection. He even regenerated to help add onto the threat, but at the last minute when all seemed lost...well i covered that...stream of consiousness yey.
Then the ending happened. The last ending. I knew what I was going to do to end this all along but was tempting for my Rook to trick him at the end even for character but in the end, had to see it through...
And so glad I committed to it because this was sheer unadulterated poetry. Four games of decisions, of plots, of character, came down to this moment. As Rook, Mythal, Morrigan, and the Inquisitor all talked the monster down. And so many amazing thematic moments here, from the very Dragon Age statement that Mythal 'twisted him from his purpose when she asked him to go to war' which speaks on that human condition thing I mentioned in the Joyguard. We are often twisted away from our purposes in life...to the fact that Mythal released Solas from her service...did she have him under a geas? But in the end he sacrificed himself, put down his burden, his desire to be right, to fix his mistakes and trying to hold on to the past...just to become a protector. To live in the service of others and protect them, keeping the Veil up.
Confusing side bar but it did mention that Solas couldn't stop the Blight but could help sooth it, think this is BioWare's ways of hedging their bets about the future of that plot point to. But the Blight did seem pretty dead. Neve had been cured.
Which then brings me to the final two more philsoopical points here, the point of this whole excercise. I believe that this game again probably did the smart thing here not convuluting things too much. We have heard hints for the last two games that the Blight had a mind of its own. An influence. "As long as the music plays. we Dance." Veilguard hinted at it to and I was wondering how far they would go in that direction in the end and whether or not at the end of the day the last big bad would be the 'Blight itself' or at least some avatar of the Blight. But there was no face to the Blight. No big bad. No Night King. No Sauron. No Palpatine. No Ultimate Source of evil that would cheapen the human lessons here and the human causes. Yes they hinted at it, they hinted that the evil of the Blight had a mind of its own and was the source even throughout the final mission.
But at the end of the day, the final conflict of the game was about a lost Elf, a very human being who made one mistake after anouther and just kept following good money after bad...but he decided to stop. Because of an appeal to his nature. An appeal to his emotion. An appeal to the connections he had made throughout his life. His human emotions, his connections got him into this mess, he became physical because of Mythal...he severed the Titans for her...and he destroyed the Elves because of the Evanuris murderign her...then that regret almost made him do terrible things to fix it...but in the end it was those same connections, with their own human connections, that ultimatley got him to stop. Prevent the plan he had been making for millenia.
And the Veilguard remains vigilant.
Must say the Epilogue was similarly well done and cinematic.
But I did not get the secret ending in my PT so had to look it up on YouTube. Heh I need to watch the Ghil'dirthalen video on it when I have time. But this plot line might not be entirely over. A mysterious voice mentioned the 'poison fruit ripens' which could be a reference to the Blight. And they mention that with the Gods out of the way maybe it is their time now.
Has the Saga of the Executors begun? So many thoughts as I ended this. How to properly convey it in a way that conveyed my meaning and not stepping on any toes. But in lieu of a review in case I never get to putting all my reviewy thoughts down on paper and post them on the far corners of the internet... my brief thoughts. I love BioWare. I always have since I first rolled into a gamestop to buy ME 2 shortly after they ported it onto PS. Again so oddly pathetic to say but this company has had such an influence on my life from where I am and who I am it is so odd to say. Not perfect I do have other influences. But they have always managed to be some of my favorite gaming experiences. They have always motivated me. Inspired me. I have wanted to become a writer because of BioWare and ME. DA helped me get through some of the darkest times in my life. As I have said recently BioWare as an organization and DA/ ME as a series has always even had more of a personal connection to me that elevates their games. I have had criticisms about each BioWare game, I have criticisms about this game. But as I ironically almost burst into tears again I have to say...as an ending to Dragon Age maybe I couldn't be happier. Is BioWare perfect? No. Is this game perfect? No. But it may just be perfect to me. And in so doing, in wrapping up 95% of the plotlines for this entire series in a way I found perfectly satisfactory on a personal level. I couldn't be happier. Despite its flaws. Despite DAs flaws in general this game is not only perfect on its own but served to elevate the entire experience. DA, for me, is now in some very hallowed ground of entertainment for me. While this other show also had its issues and really think that the fun factor in it was lacking to not make it a personal favorite...just very very liked...this game and series reminds me so much of Babylon 5. Its writing. I don't know how much of this was planned in the beginning and how much was made up on the fly. But this game feels like it concluded a video game saga four games in the making, which is ironic to since in a way B5 had its own 5 season arc...was threatened with cancellation so JMS had to rush things...but then they decided to give it another season afterall which led to a lacklustre fifth season IMO. But this is Season 4 of B5. This is a game where everything came together in a way and, again I thought they wouldn't, but actually paid off so many plot lines and arcs throughout the series. And thus DA is so special to me...almost don't want to play it again because there will never be another first playthrough of it. But I loved this game. I adored this game. And as I dance around it and continue to steam of consiousness this managed to be a very fun popcorn experience in addition to being intimatley deep. So yeah going to be so hard to rank this series now because...well I am going to do it in part, have to make my opinion known for all to hear, what DA is my favorite? They are all my favorite. And its taken probably wenty years for me to find anoter B5...wonder how long it will be before I find another Dragon Age. So what's next for me? Well I plan on, despite my intentions, maybe continuing to share my opinions on the game on here and on the internet. Continue to review it. Continue to rank and list things on my own because that is what I do. Continue to talk about the game and participate in threads I was trying to avoid because I have been *trying* to avoid spoilers. Heh. And well lots of disastifaction with this game out there so emotionally that is going to be tough to bear, but just gotta talk about this with someone! And despite part of me not wanting to ever play it again. I do also really want to. I want to see alternate outcomes. I want to play as the other classes. I want to see other outcomes. I want to see just how reactive this game is and also going to check on that stuff on YouTube. And I want to decide on my ultimate canon...but it will probbaly be Oliver he is very much in the lead right now. Maybe one day I will do a Nightmare run. Maybe one day I will replay all four games and see those hints all along (that final blow against Urthemiel at Denerim looks mighty sus now). But for right now my wife is committing...right now...for me playing her Rook. And in the interim while again want to do one for each class as well...we'll see how this goes. But I do almost want to just keep playing this game until something goes on a good enough sale to get into. But then I do want to play at least 3 games so I can play all the classes and get my cannon Rook chosen to so who knows. And who knows which game will go on enough of a sale first for me to scoop up. But yeah. This game was amazing. Emotionally draining. And God so many amazing moments with this series. If this is an end what an end it was, and at least, we have closure.

Second run done \o/ And with that bagged the last achievement. Almost missed it though since I really had to go to the bathroom so when the credits rolled I went to do so then realized on the way back "Crap the achivo pay off!". Rush to the computer and the screen is black, then cuts to the party standing in the main hall for a second then back to credits. Skipped the credits and pretty sure I got the cutscene after but it was a nice spook. Also got my own private achivo on finishing the game on Nightmare. I hated it in a fun way. Or liked it in a bad way? Either way wish there was an option to change the difficulty mid game because I got two faces of Rooks whose Inquisitor look I think I nailed and the game wont let me import that bit... But it was exciting. Doubly so that if I died I'd either have to settle for the default face for the final cutscene or reload two hours back. Which is disgusting. But a certain excitement too. Did learn a fun fact though. Item spoiler for the final battle. So by the end you can get a rune and depending on what you did in the game it can be in varying levels of power. But the game tells you that it will lend you it's power for "One final time" against the final boss. Which is cool. Except I misunderstood the first game and got it into my head that I'd be summoning a support unit and chopping off some part of the final bosses health bar once in the fight. So I was saving it for the "Final form" except it never came and I finished the game without using it. So this time I was like, I'm gonna use it. I know the final form, let's go. So get to the point open the rune menu and see that it only lasts 10 seconds. Which sounded kinda sucky but support units are usually pretty sucky so eh, good enough. Activate the rune and it's actually a really nice chunky buff for 10 seconds. Then there is a cool down and you can use the rune again... So I could probably have used it for the other phases too. And it would've been real handy. But it came in really, really handy so love it. But yeah, use the bloody rune. It's nice. But it was fun. Did a different ending this time and liked the one I got in the first run more. Will probably play some more and maybe one day I'll build up the courage to have a bit more failed run. Because it sounds spicy. But I like my little pixel people. So eugh. But again, had fun.

Thanks for the write up! 1) Roleplay & choice This may sound overly "apologist" to many, but I honestly completely checked out of the desire for critical diversity in choices of dialogue and/or plot at this point. I rationalized it in such a way that technology is at this point where the possible fidelity demands games to be basically like this, if you want that "cinematic" feel. They can advertise and cater to the hardcore RPG crowd in terms of pushing "choice, choice, choice", but we all know it simply isn't. And no, even in Mass Effect 95% of the things I got to move around inside the plot, I got to influence in the same way my nephew helps cooking with his fisher price kitchen. I get to adjust a few token details and usually one or two grandiose thing per game - the latter is usually also presented in a way James T. Kirk would not approve of, and this then thus* inflated gravitas makes it something I'd actually rather not decide. All of them designed that they're interchangeable come around the next game. It works until you think about it. I'm honestly fine to just sort of set the tone for an interesting story, and be periodically either pissed off by or excited for things. *read it, hated it too, decided to leave it for your reading pleasure 2) The ME style combat in a fantasy setting is so much fun in fact, I was daydreaming about a reboot of the entire series in that style. Fighting through DAO's Denerim siege, versus DA2'S Arishok or, well, most of DAI; with that much agency and rawness would be fun. Not that I'd seriously want them to spend resources on such a thing. 3) Just so we clear, you're not going fucking anywhere, mon bonhomme.

In case you were wondering about this: If you do not stop Hezenkoss, the giant construct you fight with the wardens is her giant bone golem thing instead.
If you do not stop Aelia, she’s the one leading the venatory fighting Teia and whoever you choose for that part.
If you do not stop the Dragon King, he leads the Antaam against your allies and whomever you’ve chosen to lead them, when you and your party ascend to the final fight.
And yeah, when I first heard his voice, I also didn’t quite like the American VO. However it was a better fit than the British one for my Elven Rook, so I used it anyway. Glad I did, because I actually really like it now. Such a good fit for my younger, less serious rook.

Well I'm finally in Act 3. Just had a talk with Neve, my Rook's LI. Such a good scene. The lighting was impeccable. I had to take a screenshot.

And that's a wrap on Gabriel De Riva's story. The Crows sent their regards to the gods, and Treviso is finally free. Overall this was a very satisfying playthrough from start to finish. Rook was direct and concise most of the time owing to his life as a ruthless assassin. Yet he had a soft spot for those he counted as friends, empathizing with their struggles and keeping their spirits up with his sharp wit whenever it was needed. He helped them all through their struggles, and through them he learned more about himself and what he stood for. Despite a very troublesome start to their relationship (he got Neve hurt and made a difficult choice that disappointed her), he stood by Neve through all the consequent troubles. They grew very close, eventually admitting that they loved each other in a moment where Neve was the most vulnerable she'd ever been. He had a very tense relationship with Solas, yet alongside his love and his best friend Harding he outsmarted the Wolf in the final moments of their journey. As a Crow, Rook was a Duelist Rogue specializing in killing enemies with ruthless efficiency. I had a lot of fun building the character out. Rook specialized in melee combat, only pulling out his bow when he couldn't get close enough. The main keywords I built around were Strike, Control, Advantage, Deflect, and Momentum. By the end, Rook rocked a 300 momentum resource bar and most of the build revolved around dishing out insane amounts of damage via Precision-fueld Charged Attacks and Thousand Cuts spam to tear enemies down. Main abilities were Pilfer for potion benefits, Toxic Dash for Sunder applications and gap closing, and Thousand Cuts for DPS, defense shred, invulerability, and semi-permanent cc on *any* target. I used the Redouble run (max out Momentum instantly) most of the time. I took a screenshot of a random charged attack I did. I've hit 4k charged attacks (per hit) when targeting armor. Toxic Dash would crit for 12k at times, and would hit even higher on Necrotic-vulnerable enemies but I took a skill that turned Strikes to physical to avoid worrying about resistances. Gearing was straightforward. I buffed Charged attacks and equipped items that improved weapon damage (Bloodletter was key). I used the Warden medium armor called Garb of Kinship that buffed Advantage massively (seriously this item is insanely strong). With all the advantages I could accrue I dealt substantial damage when I got going. I didn't need more DPS so I equipped the warden belt that gives Immovable. This is effectively a DPS increase as I stopped getting knocked around and could afford to take hits since I had Deflect up anyway. There's a skill in the upper right of the tree called Some Motivation that increases damage dealt based on maximum arrow count so I used the Unique bow that added 7 arrows. It also fired three shots per hit (at 50% per hit) so it made my scarce bow usage even more efficient on top of that. The build had INSANE synergy with Hardened Neve so I had her in my party during most quests (she even hit level 10 relationship despite being Hardened!). She applied Chilled which lets my abilities deal critical damage, and I applied Necrosis which lets her deal critical damage in turn. Early on she mostly used Blizzard but later on she did like 25k damage total with Icebreaker. Since I reduced CD on rally party, she had this up constantly. I played it with the same Nightmare + Dead is Dead personal rule to keep tension up throughout the game, though Rogue is so slippery that I never got KO'd once in my entire run. Overall this was an excellent playthrough. My next will be a Mage so I can experience that gameplay (Warrior and Rogue were very different!) but I have yet to decide if I want to be a Shadow Dragon Evoker or a Mourn Watch Necromancer.

I finished my second playthrough yesterday. Sataari'uuk, Qunari Grey Warden Champion was a badass that only became more unstoppable as the game progressed. It was a lot of fun. On the ending... I was really annoyed with Solas and more amenable to handling him less charitably than I had with my Solavellan Inquistor. In the end, though, trying to talk to him just made sense. Rook was fatigued after crushing Elgar'nan. (Seriously, he freaking crushed him. Champions can parry anything!) He was willing to fight Solas, but could honestly say, "I don't want to fight you, either."
As soon as Solas' stern facade starts crumbling, I saw my friend from the Inquisition, and I was glad to redeem him. I will definitely get around to other endings in the future, but my three Inquisitors that I'm importing were each friends with him, so it probably won't be until after they've had their time. On the Taash romance... The penultimate scene was rough. It wasn't poorly done, but rather quite the opposite. Taash's emotional immaturity was a hurdle. The final scene made up for it. It was nice. My only gripe was when Taash picked up Rook like he's some dainty lady. He's as tall as Taash and bulkier. It was goofy. 🤣 The rest was good, though.
I'd thought there might be a post-game scene, as there was with Neve, but no. The final scene was good, so nothing more was needed. I started my third playthrough immediately after. It was time to play a Rogue. Rúkiya Aldwir is an elf Veil Jumper. I intend to go Veil Ranger, and have already made some good progress in snagging good skills. (She's level 12 and has found at least two Fen'Harel statues.) She's an archer with some good blade skills, at least in approach. Rogues do a ton of damage. Just how much was surprising at first, even having expected it. My Inquistor is Fenassan Lavellan. Surprisingly, he actually looks very much like his DAI incarnation. His original hairstyle and vallislin are in the new CC, and his face was pretty easy for me to reproduce. He romanced Cassandra, who is now the Divine. I'm going to make a few different choices this time, starting with the first big choice in Act 1. I want to see how the story and characters change. Rook has tossed a few flirts at Bellara. She feels like the most likely choice for this Rook. I'll save Davrin for a fellow Warden, and the others for future Rooks. Edit: I wanted to add that Strife's grumpiness toward Veil Jumper Rook is entertaining. She gave snark for snark and Irilen just sighed and moved along the conversation. It was very natural and humorous.

I have not done much story-wise. I just met gray warden in Hossberg, did some quests, and will be meeting the Inquisitor next.
Combat-wise though, my build is coming together nicely. It’s basically invulnerability spam. I have maxed out Davrin’s invulnerability ability and enchant it with cooldown reduction. I upgrade Emmrich’s healing spell to also provide invulnerability. I focus my skill trees to increase advantage time and wear items that reduce companion’s ability cooldown. Oh and also use the rune that extends the invulnerability.
I tested this build against one of the Heart of Corruption bosses while under leveled by 7 levels. And it worked wonderfully. This game really rewards putting some thoughts into the builds.

Hey glad you did read it because I enjoyed reading it. And I agree. I don't think reactivity is something that many games do good at in what they try and do. David Gaider left a giant post as to why but really 99% of our dialogue in any RPG is just going to be us reacting to the story around us. Have to say in that regard maybe series like Horizon or the Witcher are the more honest afterall. But in this regard its interesting because while it might not be the best but as I read and observe stuff I think Veilguard is actually pretty reactive. That and the stuff that they had to do to Rook to make a certain plot point work in the end I can kind of see why Rook had to be a little bit more on rails then maybe your 'typical' BioWare protag. However it still really worked and it was like, make it a good RPG here, has to make it a worse RPG there. And I have glanced at your post periodically throughout the day and I didn't realize you said 'you're' suddenly it makes a lot more sense lol. The One where we end the game [...] do wonder if it would've gone any different had we not solved their issues and could Hezenkoss or Isseya have shown up? At the very least our allies would've been gutted in the face and unable to deal with things.
Sweet! Kind of a shame about Isseya though having her rock up with a bunch of blighted griffons in a future PT if I do decide to do an 'evil' PT would be heartbreaking. Yeah and interesting on that note because from what I heard from Alex Jordan seems his deeper voice would lend itself better for being 'serious'. *Frantically scribbles down notes* **** SO more ending thoughts. Going into it I suspected that how they treated Solas could make or break the game and I think it did just that. GDL and the writing for him was just phenmonal...and I think I am even learning to appreciate it even more and a few points that I kind of forgot to adress or noticed later.
Solas has regrets...he loves appologizing. But as it is easy to note that in a way despite being genuine, in its own way, it also is a shield/ weapon he uses to justify his evil actions. 'I am a good person because I feel regret and I am wise enough to know what I am doing is horrible but I am the only one with the knowledge who can do it anyways.' This character tick came crashing to a head in the final confrontation. "I am sorry Rook for this betrayal, but what happens happens." Arrogant. Prideful. The demeanor of a god. But then the first time he actually fully breaks and genuinely appologizes in the entire game, maybe the first time in a while...the Inquisitor shows up. "Inquisitor, I'm sorry." And Gareth does such an amazing job selling it because while the previous line to Rook sounded so bold this one feels broken, pleading, now that he is faced with another woman he betrayed (so glad my Inquisitor, even if not a Solas romance, was female), standing before him. And his tone just makes it sound like 'mommy I am sorry I screwed up." he still feels like he has to do it but now he is faced with someone he made a connection with the cracks begin to show.
NExt up...reading through some of the other ending options it is so amazingly resonant to what DA is in it. If you fight with Solas. If you show force to him then he breaks down and falls even more, instead of realizing the horror he is responsible for it and atoning for it, he doubles down and slips even more, proclaiming himself a god. For humanity or for spirits sometimes you get what you get out of something you put into it. And Spirits by their very nature are reflective, so if you deal with him with grace, you get grace back, if you deal with him with arrogance you get arrogance back. Wonderfully done.
And about spoilers...honestly it might have weirdly helped my reaction along because I got spoiled. Because I saw enough screen captures to know it was happening when it was happening in a way. So again when I made the choice for Harding to lead the second team I was like 'oh haha its all funny what if I got her killed here...oh shit I got her killed.' And just hit me because knowing it happened and the horror of what happened I think is what let it slam into me so much. Because even the wife was in disbelief to. But then of course no body so they do have the option of bringing her back later...
Then the Neve and Bellara choice. Now I went in and ultimatley chose to stick with Bellara for the end run because A. bit metatextual but she became Oliver's healer and B. I justified it that well if everyone was going into danger then Oliver would want to keep his girlfriend close to him for protection.
But the fun part is now that I know the 'princess gets in another castle' and can optomize future playthroughs if it ends up being Oliver and Oliver does romance Bellara for his ultimate canon, because am tempted on doing a Neve romance...but I just wonder what my reaction would be to it being Bellara. How different that would be overall. And how heartbreaking and how desperate Oliver will be to get her back because Neve is the tougher of the two, so there will be so much desperation in trying to get her back. How heartbreaking it will be to see Bellara being puppeted like that with a romanced Rook to? But then since I have already seen it once will it have the same effect? *** And talk about tonal whiplash but after having my heart ripped out yesterday...like the univese resets ground hog day style and back to trying to stop Solas and Hi Varric *waves*. So far the wife is going to be a lot more into this then I thought she was going to be. She was actually sitting down next to me on the couch and reading out the dialogue options that she wanted to pick and have me pick them for her. Just having me do the combat. Did remember it didn't come up I don't think but may have to make sure to read the tones and stuff because don't think I missed out...but she is going to go for Harding I guess. And there was a moment in the game where I gave her a very pointed 'this character did something that reminds me of you.' look. My wife is Harding and Bellara. Kind of fun taking pics of her character to and was putting so much effort into it. And somehow she did a really amazing job with said character. Leaves me feeling a bit chagrinned/ jealous over Ollie but no, have to remember she did a good job there to...but then might start over or tweek owing to circumstances. But she is just so photogenic and did a couple of things and went to a bigger effort with her character then with mine taking video to get cool moments. And she is like 'you don't have to take so many photos' and here I am thinking 'sure but she is just...so...damn...photogenic.' I will get around to sharing her one day. I swear. Also chose Duelist as her specialization so that is where I am going for. Going to be really interesting getting into melee so much and not the bow given melee and I did not always get along in this game and my Veil Ranger felt so OP. So didn't get far and the only choice so far she made that is different is she agreed with Harding during the first team meeting and not Neve like myself.
Other funny note during the watch the replay for pics, we basically watched Solas stab Varric three times in a row to get the pic we wanted. It became morbidly humuorous.

I completed the game today. I am exhausted and trying to get to sleep so no huge essay from me today. But I loved the game.
And if this ends up being the last DA game (I'm optimistic it won't be) then I'll be at peace with the resolution of this game's plot and how it weaved with the other games.
I think the team at Bioware did great.

Apparently on PC there is a 10 characters limit that you can have at the same time as different Rook saves. Ask me how I know

Alright started another playthrough. This time a Shadow Dragon Mage Evoker. His name is Caius Mercar. What a tasty treat! I am well under way with my Shadow Dragons rogue, regret that I didn't make him a veil Jumper, but I will survive. I am focusing on bow, projectile abilities and electricity. Was a hard fought start on nightmare, but with finally recruiting Davrin the tide turned. Really satisfying when you line up the headshots, but takes some getting used to without assist and snap. So I saved Minrathous from a blighted dragon, cleared out some quests In Arlathan forest and found an echo of an unknown force. And stepped Into the Necropolis to find grandpa Emmerich, my favourite old chap.

There is a common complaint about the characters not having glutes big enough, nor objectifiable enough. I for one think the glutes are fine, though.

Not much today - I was in the office. Got home and saw online that there's an update that brings Hawke inspired armour into the game! I decided my new Grey Warden Warrior I've cued up to do a second playthrough at some point should model it. Looks good on her! And, uh, I know it's a silly reference but also Neve's note suggest it was Hawke left in the Fade haha.

I started out more or less playing two versions of the same Rook in parallel. One romancing Taash and one setting up for the three ladies. However, I’ve ended up mostly sticking to the one with the Taash romance, since I don’t have to think too much about quest order. I wrote this down as I experienced it, so it’s a bit all over the place. I’ve also not been that good at posting these, so this is from a couple of play sessions and mostly the Taash romance Rook.
Sometimes I think they forgot how long it’s been since DAO. Multiple wardens referring to being in the last blight. That’s 20 years ago, yet most of them look like they’d have been too young to be wardens then. Also, Weisshaupt wouldn’t have experienced much of that blight, in fact it seemed so contained that no one outside of Ferelden really would have noticed, would they?
Walked in on Bellara writing her… stuff. Lead to a romantic moment. She’s so adorkable, I love her, but I feel like she might be more of a ‘sister’ for this Rook. On the other hand, she is the one with the most chemistry after Taash.
Had the scene with Lucanis in the dining area. No mention of baking cakes for Neve, just making food for the team. Maybe because he’s hardened, or maybe because I haven’t gotten far enough in Neve’s quest. Still an interesting variation.
Ok, just got the above lucanis scene with the Taash romance Rook. Here he was making a cake for Neve. Seems like the previous version was because I’m flirting with Neve. Nice of them to not let him go after your (potential) romance.
Bellara and Neve banter about the pool of grey goop from TN.
Helped Davrin with assan. Such a nice change of pace, even when not romancing him.
Killed an undead Dragon. Thanks to people talking about it here Its weakness was on my mind. For once I actually prepared and brought Lucanis and Emmrich for Necrotic damage and changed my bow to one which put necrosis on the target. Staggered it way less than other dragons, I got revived once and came close to getting killed again, but we got it in the end. What a fight, for once I actually felt competent, despite it going worse than other dragons.
Myrna and Volgoth mentioned Audric, nice little reference.
Irelin being all shocked that Venatori would ‘go so far’ as to sacrifice her people. Like Girl, where have you been? Even regular Tevinter mages use elves all the time. It really shouldn’t be a surprise the fanatics also do this.
Killed a Dragon with Taash x 2. First time I thought It would be ok with fire, since Taash was mandatory, so I brought Davrin. Turns out I was wrong and it was resistant. So on the parallel PT I brought Neve.
Afterwards Taash called me a big dumb puppy and I just don’t get it. Like what do they mean by that? I do not feel like rook made any rookie mistakes in the fight.
Wow, Shathann just said I wasn’t good enough for her child. Auch.
Banter with Emmrich and Taash. Apparently there’s a spirit of Devotion hovering around Them.
Skipping stones with Neve. This conversation is awfully intimate considering there’s no romance chances anymore for this Rook.
Taash randomly yelling ‘Rook, that was really hot’ when he defeats an enemy.
Walked in on Taash asking Lucanis about Rook’s favorite food and how to cook it.
Finished Taash’ quest.
LOVE the azure bow, but man is it annoying to get to a point where it was a viable alternative to the one I already used.
As horrible as blighted Treviso is, I am enjoying getting more Mae/Dorian content.
Dorian learning dubious tactics in the south? Wth is Mae talking about? Pretty sure his Amatus Inquisitor was a paragon of virtue…
Also apparently Ferelden settled a succession dispute with a duel. I assume they’re talking about Orlais? Pretty sure I talked my way out of that one, though there was unavoidable fighting behind the scenes, so I guess you could argue she’s right.
Ngl. A bit disappointed that this one small short quest was all I got for saving Minrathous. I had thought I’d get at least a minor questline.
At any rate. Mae is set up to become the new Archon. My Rook is an idealist and has already turned down the Threads’ blackmail material and pushed Neve towards inspiration. He’s not about to change tactics now.
Helped Harding get in touch with her feelings. Also (re)discovered that Mythal and Solas made the Titans Tranquil and apologised to her.
Antoinne referenced being bitten by a hunger demon turning people into werewolves. I really like these little references.
Emmrich and Strife are together again. I had totally forgotten that I actually felt I picked up some vibes between Strife and the mage guy he escaped with in TN. He seems to have a type or I’m maybe just overthinking it.

Today I've realized the glutes are fine. From that angle I agree they are fine, BUTT from side on they are too flat and unrealistic IMHO. With my new character last night I had to downsize them in terms of the width as they kind of then fill out too low and the running mechanics whilst enormously better than the male ones look I think weird. Butt each to their own.
