Eh I think grabbing the 3 abilities near the Mage core is all you need to be able to adapt to any situation on Nightmare as a mage. Incidentally, I think the Mage Core is the strongest of the 3 classes and I generally recommend picking up every single node before anything else.
Frost Nova is always useful. Chain Lightning helps in Arlathan (which is the first real map you can explore fully), and Fire Wall is just super useful all around. I enchanted Fire Wall to give Deflect which is very strong in the early game as Mage lacks reliable activators for it until you grab the node in the Winter section.
If you go Evoker, the path from Chain Lightning to the Evoker area is pretty powerful too as you can grab +15% mana regen, +50 mana (only non-spec node in the tree that does this!), and a passive that adds ability damage based on your weapon types. The trait nearby is also good for charged attack efficiency.
When I go spellblade I plan to skip frost abilities and focus on Lightning/Fire only for thematic reasons. There's this one orb called Mage's Gambit that swaps between the elements so I'm excited to use it for that playthrough.
Right now I'm just stacking the hell out of Chilled bonuses and with all the frost resist shred (Evoker passive most important one), I have committed to the Frost build. Though I sometimes pull out Fire spells for fun.
My final attacks doing 3k *PER* projectile on shredded/chilled targets, and I fire half a dozen of them with the Evoker passive. I don't even have the 4th Crow's Bill passive yet which makes them deal 100% more damage. I'm so excited for it haha.
Mages scale like crazy and they already started strong. Definitely the most powerful class, though also the most reliant on the team til late game. Welcome back DnD wizard I guess?

Mage is definitely my favorite, despite loving my Champion Warrior. All three Mages appeal to me, which is definitely not the case with the other classes.
The Evoker is the classic elementalist caster, battlefield control + AoE damage. It's flashy, fun, and effective.
Spellblade is a versatile caster who starts out strong with single-target damage, and eventually becomes a whirlwind of death over a large area, doubling up on Burning + Shocked stacks. I enjoy few things more than casting Tempest and fighting within and around it. I love the fast-paced Orb and Knife combat, but also love that I'm still constantly swapping to my staff at longer range or to bypass resistances in multi-enemy battles.
Veilguard's Necromancy feels fresh to me, having come from decades of D&D and the like. In Veilguard, our Necromancers are not anti-heroes who use the unsavory powers of death-like magic. Necrotic damage is the damage type that most often hits undead and demons in their weak spot. It aligns with what the Mourn Watch is supposed to be. While these Necromancers can create unsavory things, they're also best equipped to battle undead and demons.
The Necromancer Mage is possibly the strongest, most survivabile build in the game. That's saying something, given the abundance of necro-resistant darkspawn. The Necromancer can output huge damage while regenerating health and mana. It's pretty wild and has great visuals on top of it.

Well, before getting to sunny Rivain, had to clean up some stuff in Arlathan Forest and the Crossroads. Then it was off to meet Taash, who was not at all happy to see us (despite us being Crows). Getting ready to unchain the Vinsomer Back at the Lighthouse
After the group meeting I went back to Rivain - got the Warden vault open and found all the statues/chests that are available. For some reason Taash's quests to deliver food to the weather guy and go to the Hall of Valor didn't pop yet. Probably when I go back to the Lighthouse again.

I told Assan that I liked Neve and not to tell her. Meanwhile I've been flirting with Davrin too lmao
