The Carver Hawke Thread - Time to prove something!

My fist play through, I played with Bethany. Because I ditched her as soon as I got Anders, I thought the reason I thought she was boring was because I hardly knew her. Then, 2nd PT, TOTALLY fell in love with Carver. So many brother feels. So, I'm on my 3rd play through, and went Rogue again and got Bethany. Ignored Anders for pretty much all of Act 1 and took Bethany everywhere.

I think, honestly, that Carver got more lines. Or maybe her character really is that bland? Still no sister feels. Most of the way through Act 2 and haven't seen her but the letter. Wonder if she shines at all in the DLCs?

Bethany is sweet and innocent. One of her codexes says she is close to and looks up to Hawke, so already you are starting with a very different situation than with Carver. There is very little drama with her, and she always has your back. I definitely got the "sister feels" from her, just not with any antagonism.

I enjoy her banter with Fenris and Isabela. Fenris because she is the only mage he actually likes (and that means a lot from him) and Isabela because she tries to corrupt Bethany and I think it's funny. She's very sweet in Legacy, and there are a few cute banter moments in MotA, although not as much as I'd like since you spend so much time with Tallis.

Isabela: I saw you at the Blooming Rose the other night.
Carver: What? No you didn't.
Isabela: I suppose someone else stole your chin to romance Faith?
Carver: (Scoffs) That's unlikely. She wasn't even working.
Isabela: Mm-hmm. Got you.
Hawke: Carver, what would Mother say?
Carver: You're just... that's not what I... shit!

Oh, Carver... the one DA2 character that I can say I hated - at first. On my first playthrough with him (I played first with Bethany), his insecurity and antagonising nature got so into my nerves that my Hawke's replies to him actually reflected my feelings about him ('That little brother act is losing its charm, Carver'). And then, when he practically blamed my Hawke for Bethany getting killed... My first thought was 'Where's a Renegade interruption when you bloody need one? '

However, once I had completed the playthrough, and my Hawke and Carver actually reconciled (in a way) at the end, I got thinking. I have two (older) brothers, and my relationship with them reminded me a lot of what happened with Hawke and Carver in the game. Nothing dramatic like darkspawn and templar/mage wars, of course ; but, there was a lot of rivalry between us as kids too, and then, as we matured, we started building a good rapport and we're quite close now. That gave a sense of realism in the game and I was like 'Huh... That's actually neat.'

And then, as I completed more and more playthroughs with him, I started appreciating the purpose he serves in the game from a dramatic standpoint. As someone else said, he changes the most throughout the game. He's a brat who wants to escape his brother's shadow and find his own path - and as he finds his purpose and starts making a name for himself in the Wardens, he becomes a lot more mature. On the other hand, in the templar path, the angst levels go up to eleven and it reaches a climax when it's time for the two brothers to clash, each fighting for their own side. I can't hate a character who actually turns out to be well-written and helps the story in such a neat way. So now, I really enjoy my runs with him as a companion.

Mind you, he's the only one of the characters that I haven't actively tried to gain his friendship. I like him grumpy, I suppose. Or I'm mean like that. XD

Because nobody started one? I do like Bethany, but there is very little to discuss about her compared to Carver. She's loyal, she's sweet, and she isn't controversial. But feel free to start a thread for her if you want.

There is no one to officially start threads for characters, so people start them as they feel the need to discuss characters. Evidently, people saw the need to discuss Carver but not Bethany.

My first playthrough was a mage, lol. I can't help that I play a lot as Amells... dratted Cullen aside 

I just realized I can friend Carver without doing horrible things to mages!

I do it all the time. 

Befriend him without screwing over mages, that is...

I've only ever had him once, and that was friend. I hear if you do Legacy, his end game lines are always proud of Hawke.

I'm sure someday I will rival him, but love him too much right now to have bad blood with him at the moment.
