You just have to ask the right devs. Not all are being as resolute about staying quiet as the others.

Ah, my mistake then, I was thinking of that one Liara conversation where she talks about not considering herself strictly female. Silly of me. She doesn't see herself as female because Asari have no male counterparts...but it's still silly, that they don't consider themselves as female because I doubt that all species from their planet are monogendered... They must have seen species with females "and" males before they met the first alien species from another planet. And based on this comparison with the different genders of other species on their planet, they would have known to be "females"from the beginning, even if there's no male counterpart in Asaris. I disagree. Just because Asari display the external characteristics of a humanoid female doesn't mean they are female. You literally can't have female without male, one can't exist without the other. That doesn't mean they didn't realise that such a distinction could exist, but then we humans know hermaphroditic animals where both mates can "get pregnant". We apply the male/female distinction on these animals if only one gets pregnant (or if one happens to lose its male organ) purely for our convenience, it's nonsensical otherwise. The Asari already understood the world without this male/female distinction, adding this dichotomy to their understanding of themselves would serve no purpose except only for the understanding other (read sexually dimorphic) species. The Asari do distinguish between father and mother, but we must be careful here to equate (or translate that) that to male/female. The universal translate might translate this dichotomy as male/female, but be aware of the possibility that this is due to the incapability of the languages of sexually dimoprhic species to encapsulate the Asari reality any other way. TL:DR we humans assign male and female to animals for our ease of understanding as well as biological truth. Those reasons aren't valid for the Asari.

TL:DR we humans assign male and female to animals for our ease of understanding as well as biological truth. Those reasons aren't valid for the Asari. I think they have inner female organs (ovocyte, ovarian, oviduct and womb) and an vagina. Even if they fertilize their ovocyte by some kind of magic transmission, they still have the female reproduction organs....or at least that's very likely. I don't think their special case is comparable to hermaprodite species, because Asaris are no hermaphrodites...they don't have male organs. They just don't need a man to reproduce, because well...neural connection.

You literally can't have female without male, one can't exist without the other. We absolutely can. We do here on Earth. There are several species of lizards for example that are all female and reproduce through parthenogenesis, just like the Asari. So biologically it is possible, and the lore states they are an all-female race. Ergo, they are all female.

What type of personality is everyone's Ryder going to be first play through? Will you make a humanity/MW races first aliens/Andromedans second Scott, a sarcastic Scott that doesn't care about anything other than exploring, a we'll bang Ryder? Think I'll start with a sarcastic/humorous Ryder that likes to talk his way out of issues if he can. He likes to explore and meeting new people, but this "finding a new place to inhabit" will be just as much of a job as an adventure for him and he'll want to settle down at some point.

My male Ryder will be quietly confident (even if that confidence may be a little misplaced) with a good sense of humor. Mine is a little bit of an introvert but does fine when meeting and working with people, but just likes his alone time. He likes to read a lot. Enjoys science and working out.

I'm going to go with a caring/sweet Ryder with a sense of humor. That's pretty much my default with first playthroughs.

I'm going to make an introvert, sweetheart (most of the time) Ryder who doesn't take shit from assholes and will take every "renegade" interrupt against them. Hopefully the new system of choices allows me to actively be more caring and sweet towards people I like; I'm not worried about the "renegade" side of things jujdging from the choices given during confrontation with sloanne kelly

I'm always be the sarcastic goodie hero, nerdy if they let me, purple Hawke is one of the best character that have ever existed. I'm on the fence if I will customize his face though, the CC in MET was a thing of abominations, so Sheploo all the way, but if the CC of MEA is as good as in DAI I'm in. his hands is my freakin addiction >_> seeeexy I'm only seeing his boobs there

Not sure if this has been posted but it's a good interview. I liked the Nolan North discussion around the nine minute mark. After listening to this, I'm even more pumped to play as Scott Ryder especially when the voice actor was already a huge fan of Mass Effect and Bioware games.

So biologically it is possible, and the lore states they are an all-female race. Ergo, they are all female. I mean that the concept of male and female cannot exist without each other. If humans were a monomorphic species, would be assign dimorphic sexes to parthenogenetic animals? Now then, if we then actually discovered dimoprhic species, would be apply dimoprhic distinguishing classes to ourselves? I do not believe so. Would that increase our understanding of ourselves? No, because we are a monomorphic species and so applying dimorphic terms to ourselves is nonsensical *except* in order to make it easier for other species to understand us. I contend that the lore stating they are an all-female species is a failure on our part to understand a world without sexes. An Asari describing themselves as a female species is either 1) mistranslation again because we are incapable of understanding a monomorphic reality and so the translator fails or 2) they only use "female" because it helps us understand them. From "our" perspective they are all-female, but from "their" perspective it's a nonsensical descriptor. Edit: but this is off topic, so if we continue this we should do it elsewhere.

I think you're taking it all a little too seriously....don't think Bioware took the time to truly consider if the Blue space ladies would really have a concept of gender without the other species around them.

Edit: but this is off topic, so if we continue this we should do it elsewhere. Agreed. On-topic: I'm not sure what personality my BroRyder will be. I might go for annoying older brother because I really hope we can tease the hell out of our sister and just be a loving "jerk" to her. Other than that, I haven't really decided. Usually as I create my character in the CC, then their personality comes to me.
