It honestly sounds like the twins were set up to have pretty much the same experience, just in different ways. Which is about what I expected, because it would have brought some serious side-eye from folks if there was a real implication that Sara just sat in the corner and giggled at the dirt while Scott did the manly gun-slinging. Codex/dialogue/etc gave me the impression that both of them were new recruits coming off their first tours where they saw a bit of action, but were not exactly battle-hardened like Shepard or dear old dad. Just lucky for Sara, I guess, that she really liked seeing the stuff the scientists she guarded dug up. During my playthrough, I seem to recall Sara also mentioning having dealt with minefields while peacekeeping for the Alliance. Not sure if this is specific to her or not (haven't gotten that far with Scott yet), or part of a tour of duty unrelated to the one spent guarding research sites? (As an aside, while there's nothing canon to support this, does anyone else roleplay Sara as being more interested in science than Scott?)I do! Fits her well, imo, with her background and some instances in the game like explaining eyeballs to Jaal

(As an aside, while there's nothing canon to support this, does anyone else roleplay Sara as being more interested in science than Scott?) Well, I don't think about Scott at all, but I do roleplay Sara as science/tech nerd and stick with the technician profile as well. The intro established her as a recon specialist. I'll pick the science outpost over the military one (even though I know what the choice does for the end-game). Here are the dialogue in the early game that supported this approach, which is why I went with it. Habitat 7 --------- (Scanning kett tech.) Liam: "You're pretty good at this, Ryder." Sara: "I was with a team that dug up Prothean artifacts." Liam: "Well, this'll be a field day for you."
Nexus ------- Professor Herik: "Professor Herik. My colleagues and I will work with your SAM and the data you gather to solve Andromeda's scientific mysteries." [Can I join?] Sara: "I'm usually out in the field, but I wouldn't mind talking shop -- lab. You know." Doctor Aridana: "You are always welcome."
Beer chat on Tempest -------------------- Liam: "Think about your Alliance days much?" Sara: "I wanted exploration, to chase the cutting edge of Prothean research. I thought I'd found my calling."
Liam: "So, Pathfinder. Why Andromeda?" Sara: "I started in the Alliance, but it was the science that kept me going. And when that ended ... Well, if I wanted to be a part of the next big discovery, it had to be here."
Cora chat on Tempest -------------------- Cora: "Old history now. Your turn: Remind me why you came to Andromeda." Sara: "The Prothean digs woke us up to how much we don't know -- and to what humanity's next leap might be. Then Dad's career collapsed. His AI research made him too toxic." Cora: "I heard. Must have changed everything for your family." Sara: "I wanted to find worlds and secrets no one had ever seen, and Scott was itching for adventure. So, Andromeda." I know that Sara has combat experience via peacekeeping and because of her dad. I see fewer mentions of that than the science stuff, although that doesn't really mean anything either way. I recall the topic coming up with Liam commenting that she could handle a gun during Habitat 7. Here's another conversation I found to support Sara's combat experience: Andraknor: "I heard your father was part of a similar program: an N7." Sara: "He was one of the first N7s. He was proud of that, even though he didn't stay in service. Didn't stop him teaching me and my brother a few tricks." Andraknor: "So you carry a little of that knowledge with you, as well as your Pathfinder skills. N7 training would benefit my people. Heskaarl training woudl benefit yours. Perhaps ... a few war games? Show me how your skills handle the tests of a Heskaarl recruit. Challenge yourself -- and teach me." Sara: "A chance to work with the angaran best of the best? Absolutely." I didn't take a ton of screenshots my first game, but I am on the lookout for conversations that support this kind of roleplay so paying closer attention on the second run.

Yup, she's more into science than field. And like I said, both twins got some N7 training from their dad. But training means nothing without experience. Why was Shepard so good at what she was doing? Because of what she went through. What she faced and survived. Peackeeping duties on Prothean digs, combined with fangirling over Prothean artifacts, most likely even digging them with archeologists couldn't be more combat experiencing than guarding mass relay that goes to the dangerous side of the galaxy. Scott said he fought occasionally, Sara had her fun with 1 or 2 batarian pirates. These 2 autodialogues hints Scott has more combat experience thanSara, but none of them went through anything serious until they woke up in Andromeda.

True, but I think we could both agree that Sara can handle herself at the end of the game when she's disconnected from SAM and can still kick ass She went through hell, she gained some valuable experience. I think it can be compared a tiny little bit to Shepard's Akuze/Elysium/Torfan.

Honestly, I do have a bit of perspective in this. I haven't played as Scott yet since I'm waiting for NG+ to be fixed, but I have watched my husband do his playthrough as Scott. We were talking the other day about the differences between the twins, and his opinion of Scott is that he's more bemused by situations he encounters than being on-point with any kind of real experience. Scott does not read, to him, as someone who has done more than lived through a few fistfights. Which is what he expected, since Scott is a 22 year old fresh out of training and not, you know, Shepard.
Sara does not have an edge over her brother, it's true, but neither of them are better prepared for the things that go down once they arrived in Andromeda. They both do a good job figuring stuff out and getting things done, at least!

On Habitat 7 they both says they didn't do anything crazy Oh, I totally imagine them getting together on the rare leave and bullshitting each other about the outlandish things they did at their posts. You know, trying to one-up each other with tall tales. ...and then they get to Andromeda and the tall tales are reality. Whoops.

I didn't play Shepard as anything other than a soldier (leading her team into battle to destroy, destroy, destrooooooooooy) so I found Ryder to be refreshingly different and wondered if I was also subconsciously preventing Ryder from leaning more military. Like I will look at the weapons and see the krogan hammer. Wouldn't hesitate on Shepard, but for Ryder, I ponder the roleplay aspect, "Can she really use this? Would she?" (IIRC, there's a weight penalty for the hammer. Shepard works out to stay in shape. I didn't know if Ryder did. Hence the pondering.)

With me, Sara stuck with the Omni-Blade, but did consider the Asari sword. Which, however, requires Biotics to use with Huntress-grade lethality, so... Omni-blade. She was also an Infiltrator, so no point carrying something she'd rarely use and just weight her down, because hey, that Widow isn't light!

I reconciled the Asari sword for Sara as this:
She trained as an infiltrator in the Alliance and the special N7 training from Alec was training for the N7 Shadow, which included learning how to fight with a sword.
When she merges with SAM and unlocks the ability to strengthen her Biotics, she 'jurry-rigs' the Shadow Strike ability the N7 Shadow has by turning on tactical cloak then blinking up to the enemy to strike at them.

Bio tool, or whatever it's called (can't remember now) is better. It can kill a few enemies at once I tried Asari sword, but as much as I looooove katanas (and they do look like katana), using it is frustrating.

My Sara is like your's as well. She's specced as an infiltrator and received special N7 Shadow training. The melee weapon I see fitting her the most is the Electric Firaann. It's fast, it primes for tech combos, and just seems very "spy like" to me. My other Sara (named Ellie) is a vanguard so her melee weapon is the Bioamp. Annihilation, Charge, melee (the Bioamp staggers), and then Lance. Rinse and repeat. Until the ascendants come in... Profile change!

Hm, I gotta try both of these Strongly recommend. There are two versions of the Angaran knife (firaan, I think?) - plain and electric. I think these are my favourite melee weapons in the game - no faffing about with flashy animations, just straight up shanking. Not as much damage as some other weapons but, imo, the speed makes up for it. I'm pretty sure I can stab someone twice during the time that the Asari sword does its animation. And the Remnant Cryo Gauntlet freezes unarmed enemies instantly and primes for combos. I crafted mine and named her Ellen I also have Alec the sniper rifle and Scott the pistol.

Each person plays 'em as they want to play 'em. Doesn't make it canon for everyone else when the game sets it up as being pretty much equal. That said, sure, I played Sara as being very much into the science aspect. Exploration and discovery seems to fit her with the background given, and I like having a separation from my straight soldier canon Shepard. Also that Pathfinder thing seems to work best when you have a drive to explore and understand things. I imagine Sara and Suvi often nerding out together in their free time. I know my next Sara and Suvi will be.

SO, just throwing a random question out there. What training do people use for their Sara's? I know it does no matter as much, but for me, it feels awkward to go with anything but Technician for her, given her backstory. Used soldier at first, but biotic is way better. You can still use all kinds of weapons, but it gives a better kick for biotic powers, which is a nice thing.
