Hi. I'm new to these boards and I'm sorry if this has been done before. I had a look back at previous pages of posts but couldn't find anything so I created this thread
What was you first genuine like OMG, Wow, ZOMG! moment the first time you played a Mass Effect game?
I remember mine pretty well. Not the exact details but enough. I thought I had a couple before the actual one, and in a way they were too, but my first actual moment of like "Wow, this game is just unbelievable" was after I gained control of the Normandy in the original game.
My head was kind of spinning from this new gaming world that I'd been tuned into for about 2 hours straight. I mean I had had some Wow Moments in those 2 hours, like when you see Sovereign taking off from Eden Prime, and of course the vision from the beacon, and becoming SPECTRE was cool, even if it was a bit predictable. After I gained control of the Normandy I knew I was playing a special game, but it was a simple little thing that gave me my first genuine actual Wow Moment.
So I was on the bridge of the Normandy, I think it was just after I gave a speech to the crew, and I went to the bridge area and looked at this incredibly cool, futuristic holographic thing for charting your adventures. I selected a region that I cant for the life of me remember, I was pretty overwhelmed at this point, and chose a system and started looking at planets. I may have surveyed one or two, again I cant remember the specific details but eventually I saw the option that said land on one planet, and I'm thinking can I actually land here and explore or will it be like a small hub area to buy and sell stuff and talk to NPCs? So I chose land and eventually I see something coming out of the Normandy that looks a bit like a tank. It then lands on ground using very cool air-blast thingy technology so it wasn't crushed on impact. It's at this point now where the game is saying loading or saving or whatever and I'm thinking no way i am getting to control this? So after it loaded in and stopped stuttering I went to pick up my controller and I swear I felt nervous doing so and when I lightly touched the left stick the vehicle moved slightly and I'm like "No way I am getting to drive this about!", and then a press of the right stick moved the view and right there and then I have my Wow Moment, or my ZOMG! moment or whatever you want to call it but you know what I mean. I paused it and brought up the map and thought to myself this is unreal!
I know these side quests in the Mako seem to divide fans of the original game, some love them, some not so much, but me personally I love doing them and pretty much land on every planet you can on every playthrough. I may not always find every thing on the maps, especially stuff that isn't marked, but just having the freedom to play the game like this at your own leisure was and still is just incredible.
Almost 10 years later and for me personally that hasn't been a game the was as revolutionary or as ground breaking as Mass Effect was.
I feel pretty lucky to have played the original game on 360 before using my file for the sequel because I remember asking my PS3 owning friend if he had got Mass Effect 2, which had just recently been released on PS3 at that point at he was like yeah good game, so I asked him about how it works regarding the choices that you had to make in the original, and he's like there's this interactive thing where you answer questions and that and he was like yeah I get the gist of the game but I was like mate trust me you have know idea. I think he thought I was just winding him up but I wasn't.
So anyway, what was your 1st genuine OMG!, Wow Moment?

The opening sequence with the Normandy and Mass Relay.
After that, you kinda just knew this game was going to be special.

For me, it was probably talking with Sovreign in the first game-- that voice is so badass!

I can't handle all this nostalgia. Sometimes I wish (as much as I love 2) that we'd have gotten a sequel that simply reused most elements of ME1 but tightened it up a bit and retained the overall style of dialogue, the retro-sci-fi feel that's so prevalent and all that. ME1 has a very special vibe I sometimes wish we'd have gotten more of before EA turned BioWare into the popular kids with over-focus-tested products.
My big initial wow moment in ME1 was definitely when you're hitting the Citadel after Eden Prime. In general, the little segment after waking up from your bad dreams and the introduction to the Citadel was just full of good buildup. It crescendo'd perfectly.

I can list plenty of badass moments over the trilogy but I can't really point to one as the one that got me hooked. I suppose I was indoctrinated, the game just subtly worked me until not playing it was out of the question I can point to some things that helped. The TRON like electronic music. Keith David. The feel of a giant galaxy via the galaxy map and popping down on random planets to explore. Customizing Shepard. Making dialogue choices and talking to people to get them on my side (and in some cases in bed). Honestly those last two are probably the hidden key to the whole thing for a lot of people. It's so simple and insidious it might as well be indoctrination. Get people to put themselves in the protagonist's shoes and get them to talk to other characters, influence them and make connections. It subconsciously makes players take ownership of the whole thing. They're not going to stop and why should they? It's not just a game. This is their adventure, their quest and their people. Indoctrination indeed.

I played ME1 first, so my first such moment comes from that game by default - It's right when Shepard is looking out the window leaving Earth. It was soon topped though when I triggered the cutscene on Eden Prime describing the devastation from Sovereign landing.
In fairness to the later games... My two most intense WOW! moments come from ME2 and ME3. From ME2, it's when the SR2 is first revealed; and in ME3, it's when the shuttles leaving earth are blown up by the Reaper.

Virmire, first Wrex (Ashley killed him) and then leaving Kaidan to die. Bloody hell, I was a wreck. Depressing, I know, but the 'Wow!' factor was playing a game that could make me feel this way.

First big moment for me was the Virmire choice. I really expected being able to rescue Kaidan after rescuing Ashley. How naive I was. I was honestly shocked at his death.

Would probably be my first WOW moment of the series. The sheer scale of the Citadel and DA were pretty amazing. My second one would be when Sovereign reviled it self to be a Reaper.

For me, it was probably talking with Sovreign in the first game-- that voice is so badass! Same scene for me: the revelation about Sovereign's true nature was what "wow"ed me. Even though I came to Mass Effect late (first playthrough was in 2014), I went in unspoiled. Honourable mention to the Collector ship in ME2 when the true nature of the Collectors is first revealed.

Since I played ME2 first, I would say seeing the SR2 for the first time, hearing ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL and the conversation with Harbinger in Arrival

My first big wow moment? I played out of order, being on a PS3 and having picked up ME2 and 3 second hand. So ME2 was the first game I played, so my first successful run of ME game was ME2 and I remember a couple that stood out... 1)When i first go given the run of the Normandy, the New Improved Normandy. To be honest I didn't take much of the original Norm in, what with it being on fire, not knowing who anyone was or what the hell was going on, but getting a new ship was a real squee moment. I didn't understand why it had to be called Normandy and why I couldn't rename it after some other region of France but my flat echoed with "A spaceship! My very own spaceship! Dammit Solas, this is waaaaay better than that castle you got me! ". 2)The first of what I call my "Now THIS is what I call Sci-Fi!"moments. Stepping onto the ambandoned collector vessel in ME2. There's that big massive hall thing where your comrades will either comment on there being enough pods to abduct every human on earth or just be mindblown. I seem to remember Kasumi's reaction is rather like mine... "Whow! That's awesome...in a somewhat sinister kind of way." 3)Shepard's jump from the disintegrating Collector Base to the Normandy, where he/she's caught by a team mate. Still one of my favourite shots of the series. 4)Any big space moment. Be it a battle or some of Joker's best flying skills or just that approach to the Citadel for the first time. The approach to the Collector Base, the Citadel reveal and the final battle above Earth are highlights in a "this is just like Star Wars" kind of way. 5)I'd been so impressed by ME2, and heard of the awesomeness that had been Wrex, so I downloaded ME to play. "Now THIS is what I call Sci-Fi!"moment: The Citadel. The outside looks great, but the inside of the Presidium looks like what every space station should from my childhood daydreams. The Death Star, Babylon 5, Deep Space 9, you can take them all, I'll have the Citadel thanks, even just the Presidium.

I've started playing Mass Effect just a few months ago, so I remember it well. The first thing that impressed me was the dialogue between Anderson and Udina that carefully re-capped the origin story of my character. Then my first Shepard came on the screen, and from then on, I had tons of wow moments running the Trilogy. On my second play-through in, I am still having the Wow! moments. On MP, starting each new kit, I have Wow moments. And I am not an excitable person by nature. It's just a game that really delivers a great entertainment for me. I am just keeping fingers crossed it does not get spoiled.

It was back in 2009, so I can't remember very well. The intro was a wow moment. Then the Citadel reveal. However, Mass Effect 1 doesn't have many big moments, it's the atmosphere and setting that make it great, so my first "I really like this game" moment was probably the first uncharted planets I visited. Especially Agebinium. The feeling going through the mine, disarming the bomb and the sniping section was very appealing to me.

I actually hated Mass Effect the first time I played it. Eden Prime is a huge drag for any one new to the franchise but it starts to get interesting when you reach the Citadel. It really flourishes once you get control of the Normandy and you stand in front of that galaxy map and can go to all these different places and systems within clusters in different sections of the galaxy, all while every single planet has its own description of its composition and history of battles or old empires that once lived there through galactic history.
Mass Effect's codex and galaxy map were actually a bit overwhelming for me but it was all laid out so well and so believably done I instantly fell in love with it all.

For me it was the first 5 minutes of the game, with the Normandy zipping past Jupiter and the camera tracking Shepard making his way through the Normandy as the crewmen bustled about.

Mass Effect 3 was actually my first ME game. I first played it in 2012 when I was 14. I was hella amazed at the opening when the Reapers first attacked.

A bit of an preamble here: I can't remember if that was the first wow moment, but it was the one that mattered the most. I got ME1 because some people on another scifi forum were pretty much hyping it. I got pretty big expectations from that and found the game not living up to the hype at all. There were some really good spots, but overall I found ME1 to be slightly above average. The Universe was really great, but I didn't realize that until my second playthrough.
Anyway, the wow moment came at the very end, the confrontation with Saren. So far the Endrun was a pretty generic (but pretty) shooting gallery as seen in dozens other games. Then Saren shows up, there us the usual amount of trashtalking and then ... he shoots himself! That was something I really didn't expect, and it was great! Of course, there still was a fight against him shortly after.

Would probably be my first WOW moment of the series. The sheer scale of the Citadel and DA were pretty amazing. My second one would be when Sovereign reviled it self to be a Reaper. Music, cinematography, style and everything is just perfect in this scene really. It's at that exact moment I felt like I was in it for the long haul. You get a sense of wonder of the galaxy while feeling the companionship between the normandy crew as they banter a little bit during arrival, and Ashley's anticipation really matches your own as a player. BioWare really knew what they were doing with that scene in particular.

The introduction of the Citadel was an amazing moment indeed. The music especially I think captured the sense of awe you felt seeing this massive space station thing. Actually some really great moments regarding the Citadel. The battle at the end was epic. I didn't think games had reached as high a level as that, aesthetically I mean, until that point when I played that section for the 1st time. It was just breathtaking. The only other moment in gaming I had like that was in MGS4, in the 3rd chapter, and that was a non-interactive cutscene with Snake, Ocelot etc. But in Mass Effect you're actually fighting through waves of Geth on the outside of the Citadel, and then when that decision had to be made I though I might not actually survive the end of this game, because even though the character you are usually always does Mass Effect was pretty ruthless when it came to making choices and people surviving/not surviving.
In the 2 sequels I think the opening of the 2nd game is the best moment for me. I was stunned when I 1st played ME2. Beautiful direction, great music and just the shock-factor of what was happening gave me a genuine sense of what the hell is going on here. Probably my favourite moment of the trilogy.
