So just started reading this yesterday and have had a great deal of trouble putting it down. Has led to my slowest PT of MEA ever

Still reading Codex Alera, but went for a walk/picnic with my girl yesterday and decided to bring some new stories I haven't read.

Codex Alera at work and on the bus up to a hiking trail. Pokemon meets the Lost Legion! Yes, those really were the inspirations for that series

Only 11 books left. (The romances in this series are terrible) Perrin's arc is the best in this book.

I'm about halfway done with Assassin's Quest, the final book of the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb. It's... okay. I don't really like Fitz though. I'll have to read more of Hobb's work before I can form a real opinion of her writing.

I am not sure Fitz is meant to be entirely likeable but I found that part of his appeal as well. The live ship books were the ones of hers that didn't really grab me but I enjoyed the follow up series to the Farseer trilogy which focuses more on Fitz and The Fool. Fools Errand I think is the first one. I also liked her Forest Mage series.

I've glanced at Robin's Farseer books but they didn't grab me. That was also after some pretty heavy handed recommendations for the Thomas Covenant Trilogy which I hated though. Perhaps worth another look. I also liked her Forest Mage series. Ditto, I enjoyed her Soldier Son Trilogy. Recently gave em away now I think about it. (Parting with 6/7 boxes of books hurts for a while...) They aren't great, but they are quite unique in the fantasy world IMHO. Definitely good; they don't bring that "something"/order of magnitude that Rothfuss or Sanderson can bring. On par with the Lighthouse Duology I'd say. Which I'd recommend to someone looking for good fantasy when they've run out of rereads of the great stuff. Oft overlooked gem. Not an order of magnitude better like say Rothfuss's storytelling or Sanderson's worldbuilding can achieve, but good.

Not an order of magnitude better like say Rothfuss's storytelling or Sanderson's worldbuilding can achieve, but good. That's funny, I never recommend the Thomas Covenant books to anyone anymore even though they are in probably my top 5 series of books because they seem to appeal to people or completely not. I remember the first time I tried to read the first one I just couldn't get more than a third of the way before putting it down but I tried again and eventually grew to love them. I think Fitz and Thomas Covenant are both flawed characters with a sad history to fall back on and that is used to try and make the reader sympathise with them. It obviously doesn't always work, however I like the complexity it brings to them and the unpredictability it adds to the stories. I agree re the Soldier Son books they are really different to normal fantasy novels and whilst I really liked them I could see that they would not appeal to mainstream fantasy readers. I have not heard of Carol Berg will try to remember her name when I am looking for a book in the future.

Can't recommend her(Carol Berg's) other stuff too much but she hit on a relatable and genuine protagonist in her Lighthouse Duet. Comparable to 99% of fantasy out there today his powers are downright mundane. (Cartography lol?) Yet it worked. It evolves. The plot-lines aren't terribly complex and lack all the foreshadowing I love way too much, but the story itself is quite good. I'd definitely put it in many of the same categories as the Soldier Son Trilogy. Also in the same spectrum and another oft-overlooked gem...

Do you remember what killed it for you in a more specific way? They definitely had areas that weren't great. There were a lot of things I liked though. Conrig's literal "blue iron barrel Iron Crown" and his mentality towards rule. The nature of magic, downright unpleasant(and again literal) painful consequences of it's use, and the marks that'd leave on the soul. Also when Ullanoth stops being a random succubus of doom and gets some character. Random story, I had an extremely hard time getting the third book. It took years to get it for no particularly good reason save a continuing string of bad luck and forgetful memory. (Which does not a constitute good reason...) Subsequently I was left on a cliffhanger of sorts for quite a while. (Granted GRRM's outdone himself in regard to that milestone...) Anyways, Sorceror's Moon is set quite a bit in the future. Sets quite a different tone for the ending. Bit bleaker, certainly aged. Feels like she skipped a book between but moved the story along to where it needed to finish.

And treats everyone who cares about him like crap. Again, I think it makes sense based on how his life goes, but in my head I keep wanting him to just do something lol. Maybe if I read some of the other books he's in my opinion of him will improve. I'll give Liveship Traders a try first though.

It was so long ago I really can only remember generally that the characters didn't grab me much and in terms of your random story that was an issue for me in Australia, the book seemed to reach here a long time after I had read the others and I just couldn't be bothered by that stage going back to them. I might give the first two a go again at some stage and see if the third is available first

Just finished this one: Love this universe, and am very happy this series is continuing. I think this is a 6 book series in the making, not sure about that though. I could absolutely recommend this as a solid read to everyone.
