So as I mentioned somewhere I am taking a break from reading Harrington to read both the prequel novels to Inquisition. Starting with Asunder. Liked this one less then Masked Empire, it was a little dry honestly, but still a good read. All three of the main characters however are pretty top notch. Rhys, how I wish he was a companion in Inquisition that would have actually been really cool. Evangeline, discount Cassandra Pentaghast. And of course Cole whose mystery was truly interesting and he was pretty well written all things considered. Its kind of a shame though that Lambert was so 'cartoonishly evil' but hey, what can you do? It is worth pointing out about Lambert that it is interesting, given what we know about Tranquility in Inquisition, some of his reactions to the 'Tranquil cure' we found in Asunder. I mean some of the stuff he says almost suggests that the idea that the Seekers knew of a Tranquil cure wasn't written yet...but there is one or two things that does suggest otherwise.

The book was a decent read but I thought the main characters were the lowest of the low. I just detested Rhys and thought he was a fool ala Anders. Evnageline was a traitor of the worst kind and cole was a monster.
I'll give BioWare credit for how they handled cole in the actual game as if they did not do a fine job i would have killed him immediately just from his book actions.
The two most reasonable characters in the whole book were the 'villains' Lambert and the red haired mage girl.

That seems like an oddly Templar specific point of view. Though it is curious that you equate Anders to Rhys and call Adrian one of the 'reasonable' considering Adrian's actions were more comparable to Anders's then Rhys's. I mean he may be a fool but he didn't really go through blowing anything up and wasn't especially violent.

He then took the side of cole who was a murdering demon. He then used Evangeline and her misplaced love for his little quips to get her to betray the templars. But worst of all his mother (Wynne) Sacrificed everything for him and the moment she was out of the way he went 100% against what she had stood for. I don't think there has been a more selfish character in all of dragonage when you look at his actions, not his merry quips.

I don't think there has been a more selfish character in all of dragonage when you look at his actions, not his merry quips. I disagree myself. Just remember everyone, spoilers!
I was completely fooled by cole too. 100% did not expect him to be a deamon, though I fully expected him to betray and/or kill Rhys. I actually said out loud 'oh shit' when that was revealed.
Man, I hated Wynn in this book. Being an apologist for the templars, instead of working to free the mages. And her, up and abandoning her son like that. Yea, no thanks. I'd just as soon as she died going to the gathering, then show up and act like she did. Though I'm from the US. Everything the templars did/do to the mages, are exactly why we rebelled. So I really feel for the mages.
I was glad evangeline realized mages weren't this foul thing, and human beings being opressed. I'm not saying she should have done a 180 like she did, but I'm glad she at least had that realization, that most templars don't seem to have.
And I'm glad that Rhys would up leading the rebellion. If the third game wasn't just a single player mmo grind fest, I might have wanted to see how the rebellion turned out. And having that background knowledge, might have made some of the characters better to me.
I'm also glad, that one asshole inquisitor kicked the bucket. Freaking psychopath that he is. Personally, I'd sooner die the be turned tranquil. And I would fight to my last breath, to not become tranquil.
Had kind of a brain fart. I forgot I already had Carlos Ruiz Zafon's third book of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series, The Prisoner of Heaven, until I just happened to be looking at my bookshelf today and spotted it. Doh! So, started that today. It's a lot shorter than the second book, The Angel's Game, and so far is a pretty quick read.

I recently started reading Terry Pratchett’s The Colour of Magic (even as an American I am compelled to use the British spelling).
When not reading that, I’ve been taking stabs at King Arthur Pendragon Edition 5.2.

I'm enjoying reading about Renly Baratheon's death. He was a bloody peacock and his death was well warranted, thank you Stannis Baratheon.

Two things: Shattered, by Kevin Hearne, a book from the Iron Druid series that was given to me as a gift. It's okay but it's like the fifth book so I have no context for a lot of what is happening.
Locked Tight (Mindjack: Zeph Book 1) by Susan Kaye Quinn, for Kindle, probably for either 99 cents or free. It's not bad but it's a pretty quick read. Next on my list is The Magician's Land by Lev Grossman. Really looking forward to it based on the first two books in the trilogy. Much better than The Magicians TV series that I also enjoy.

Attempts to add in a story to the original Doom. Not bad so far, in fact I'm kinda liking it, even if its just a few levels above fanfiction. Probably won't go deeper into the series after this, though. Most of what I read about the other books say that it goes downhill after this.

I just finished this and with that I have completed my kindle complete works of Fydor Dostoevsky. What is with so many authors trying to always make you sympathetic to characters who are total selfish assholes? I have pulled out an ancient short paperback sci fi novel to tide me over until I get some more kindles stuff.

Now that I've finished this over the weekend, I'll add a couple more things. Stephen King ventured into the crime/detective genre with the "Mr. Mercedes" novels and he continues to do so with "The Outsider". He mixes in horror and supernatural elements with a competent hand and this book turned out well. And then there's this: STEPHEN KING'S LATEST NOVEL, THE OUTSIDER, ALREADY IN THE WORKS AS 10-PART SERIESwww.syfy.com/syfywire/stephen-king-the-outsider-10-part-seriesNot all of the more than 50 bestsellers King has produced over the last 44 years have been what I would call good, but I think this is one of the good ones. Those who liked the "Mr. Mercedes" books may be pleasantly surprised that one of the characters from this series crosses over to "The Outsider". Holly Gibney But it is not necessary to have read the "Mr. Mercedes" trilogy to enjoy this book. Also, it didn't help my frame of mind that I was following this story in the real world news as I finished the book...

Just finished: And its rather improved over book 1. Now the real question is, do I want to move onto book 3. And...yea, I kinda do. There are some things that are outstanding, which I really want the author to address. Why the princess doesn't mind killing people. Is she a sociopath? Are her implants doing something to make it so she doesn't care? But the rest of the series is rather interesting. Can def recommend. Just know, book 1 is not that great. 2 is where you really see the writer start to improve.
Edit: Also, don't go expecting some epic saga. The story seems fairly straitforward. Not that thats a bad thing mind you. I'm just enjoying the ride, as its written decently.

I've read the first two books myself. And yeah, it's pretty decent. It's a six book series, I think? as to the spoiler: I think her implants do take over in the moment of crisis. She gets pumped full of combat drugs and such. But hasn't it been established that once that wears off she gets the shakes really bad and is kind of a mess afterwards?

She gets pumped full of combat drugs and such. But hasn't it been established that once that wears off she gets the shakes really bad and is kind of a mess afterwards? Yea, but that's due to Adrenalin. There's been nothing with her dealing with the fact that she looses control of her body. Or the fact that her body was used to take life, w/out her input, knowledge, or consent. And there's been nothing but the off handed comments about her having the odd nightmare.
Heck, she's in such a decent mental state, she actually takes a lover. Giving the impression that she doesn't care about the fact she's taking life.
[/div]
Not sure why it needed the second spoiler, but it did.

Thomas Jefferson: President and Philosopher.
It's intended for younger audiences but I figured reading low-level books would be a good way of getting my mind back into the groove of reading.
