So she admits to being a feminist, but one that believes in equality, so not some crazy third wave feminist. Anyway, she says "I'm a Star Wars fan first and a feminist second." And that Star Wars shouldn't be that vehicle to promote a feminist agenda as it doesn't make a good movie. The rest of her points are good too. NuWars flat out fails at shilling feminism. You got Holdo an anti social (who in the fuck would ever willingly give her command of a fleet under normal circumstances?) self insert for problem glasses cat women, Rose an equally shallow hypocritical character being a mouthpiece that spews faux socialist anti capitalist jargon for an infamous corporate entity, and looks like she was only included to make the diversity quota, and Rey a can do no wrong wunderkind übermensh who nearly enthralls all who meets her, and whose only noted character flaw was her refusal to admit that her parents ain't shit despite the alleged conflict during the Not Dagobah cave sequence not being detrimental to her character throughout both films. Leia is the only balanced, and sensible fem character despite her being in a coma for nearly half the film, while a comic book exclusive character, Aphra, is better written than the majority of TLJ's characters. Also, i used to shit on Darth Krayt whenever he was referenced, despite his impressive showing against Abeloth, but Kylo and Snoke made me re-examine and mildly appreciate his character.

Rey isn't a Mary Sue. It's become trendy to label any character that doesn't have a crippling flaw as a "Sue." She's "generic plucky heroine #45,789. When I first watched the original trilogy, I was already familiar with the "hero's journey," and subsequent sci-fi and fantasy tropes. Luke was just "generic plucky hero #56,879." He was the guy little boys could imagine themselves being. I'm sure he gets fleshed-out in the EU, but I always cared for Han Solo more than Luke. Rey's not a Sue, she's just a vehicle to sell action figures.

Heck, aside from swinging across a chasm and using the Force to launch his proton torpedo, he was pretty much carried through ANH by Han and Ben. Rey has ZERO flaws, and is taking over both Han and Luke's role, because they ended up broken down old men who failed at their lives and needed her to pick up the pieces.

Rey has ZERO flaws, and is taking over both Han and Luke's role, because they ended up broken down old men who failed at their lives and needed her to pick up the pieces. she has flaws and Luke was a bad ass. Rey uses for Force with no training and in a few days, she's carving her way through Snoke's personal bodyguards. Luke, under the direction of Ben, can barely hold his own against a training droid. And after weeks/months of intense training still gets his *ss handed to him by Vader. (while Rey can fight Kylo to a standstill, again with NO training) Luke BECOMES a bad*ss through time and growth across the trilogy. Rey simply is one due to her very existence.

She's pure wank. An expert combatant from only fighting lowly scavengers on a backwater planet, knows and flies the Millenium Falcon better than Han Solo and Chewbacca who are mystified by her, entrusted with the series' legacy weapon by Maz just because, can resist a trained force user's mind probe, and use the mind trick on sentient beings with no prior training despite Anakin Skywalker struggling to use it on non sentient beasts during his training. Is an adept lightsaber fencer with no prior training, and despite her being a stranger she receives a consoling hug from Leia after Han's death leaving Chewbacca a decades old friend out in the cold. All of this after Rey just learned that Luke Skywalker, and the force were real and not myths a few days prior. Then there's Rey easily besting Luke a legendary veteran warrior in a melee scrap, clearly attacked him in rage but the subject is never brought up while Yoda of all people is enraptured by her, and later she was theorized by Snoke to be a manifestation of the force's attempt to create balance against Kylo, potentially ramping up her snowflake status despite her parentage. Her character's only noteable flaws were her wrongly tapping into the darkside of the force, and her denial about her parents which didn't hamper her character. When only comparing their respective film trilogies, Anakin and Luke who are supposed to be freaks of nature looked pedestrian by comparison in their struggles. All the EU can do for Rey's character at this point is display how she learned wookie and droidspeak, how she became a bostaff master, where she learned how to swim, and knows how to pilot the Falcon (assymetrical cockpit) so well without any prior experience. JJ and Rian screwed Rey's character over on the force side of things, unless everyone just accepts the fact that she's only a vehicle through which the force does awesome stuff, but that only robs her character of agency.

A summary of part of Jospeh Gordan-Levitt's 2,000 word essay on The Last Jedi: If you’re super lazy and didn’t read the TL;DR version, here’s a TL;DR of the TL;DR: getting old kinda sucks; we change (sometimes for the worse) and the people we love and used to recognise change around us. Luke Skywalker is no different. Yes, it hurts but we have to move on – that’s what The Last Jedi is about. I just don’t know why it took a college essay-length piece from an A-lister to make me realise that, but here we are.www.gamesradar.com/didnt-like-luke-in-star-wars-the-last-jedi-joseph-gordon-levitts-essay-might-change-your-mind/

A summary of part of Jospeh Gordan-Levitt's 2,000 word essay on The Last Jedi: your-mind/ How come the fans have to move on but not the creators, who are determined to remake a Rebellion vs Empire conflict? Indeed. I don't know, what is it this week that is ruining Star Wars? Is it the alt-right? Is it toxic masculinity? Is it the fans? Is it the haters? Is it hackers? Not pretty enough protagonists? Our own pre-conceptions? Communism? Whatever it takes to deflect the truth: it was a very mediocre film with two decent scenes which don't make up for the very long and tone-deaf disaster Rian gave us. Self-delusion is one HELLUVA drug...
