Actually come to think of it is this Johnson's first actual movie project? I know he has done (critically acclaimed) tv before, but what if any movies has he done? Looper?

His first film was apparently Brick (2005), according to the internet. He’s also done Looper (2012) and The Brothers Bloom (2008). Both Brick and Looper were well received, The Brothers Bloom was not. I’m actually not convinced he was prepared for the scale of this production.

Or he wasn't prepared for the lack of scale in this movie and just how much he'd have to cram in there.

Fashion tip: Never put a fricken helmet on underneath the hood of a cloak. It looks absolutely ridiculous.

This movie would still be better than just about any story told in the Disney canon.

The sane version is that it "underperformed." The projection it underperformed against is never entirely clear.

Guys, we don't really need to debate it anymore... Who's the "we" there? All of us who are tired of this: I genuinely want to know: WHY IN THE ACTUAL FUCK are some people compelled to (in a futile attempt) defend this awful movie??? Do they think it is necessary? Do they think it will work? Do they think Disney will e-mail them a fucking coupon or something???

All of us who are tired of this: OK. I can sign on with that while still thinking you're completely wrong about the film, right? You already know the answer, don't you? It's the exact same reason that some people are compelled to keep attacking this excellent film.

My whole thing is that certain "fans" who put up with and in some cases lavish praise upon some of the dumbest things within the Star Wars IP suddenly can only stomach the finest writing and adherence to hard science when they criticize the flaws within the newest films, especially TLJ. Sure, TLJ could have been better in several ways, as TFA could have, but I can't take anyone seriously who hold up any of the prequels or old EU books as the epitome of great.

I am afraid I cannot articulate EXACTLY why this movie was so PROFOUNDLY disappointing... but it was. I actually went home & re-thought my life Some guesses as to why it still stings me personally; - I was a casual Rian Johnson fan, liked Looper & Brick very much - I was excited to see more info (or at least hints) about Snoke, TFO & the Knights o' Ren - Rey's character arc was pretty compelling, I was looking forward to see her overcome some adversity - I was excited to see a new lightsaber or 2 - Hoping for a cool Carrie Fisher death scene - Excited to see Luke as a Jedi Master - Curious as to how Ben/Kylo re-built his saber after it was damaged - I was glad that my beloved Star Wars movies seemed to be in capable hands...

Where'd you get the idea that a Carrie Fisher death scene was ever on the table? It would have made more sense (since the actress passed away) & made writing episode 9 easier. Not to mention there was a poetic way for her to go out, all that would have been necessary was for Leia to step in at the last second & tells Holdo to STFU and lead the rest of the resistance to the safety of the deathtrap abandoned Rebel base Logic is not on the table it seems

Yes it would have been more logical to change 8 to kill Leia off instead of Luke but this is Disney we're talking about here...

It would have been obviously fake. Edit: Fake Tarkin kinda sorta worked, as did the couple of seconds of Fake Leia. But we didn't have Real Tarkin and Real Leia running around in the same movie. Although more Laura Dern in IX would have been a plus.

I went home and downloaded the Heir to the Empire trilogy and started rereading the Tales of the Jedi series. I wanted to see: Finn grow as a character. He was the best part of TFA, imo. Luke in a mentoring role Rey learning about her past, and about the Force Ben growing into a true villain, or be on the path to redemption, or at least stop being a whiny emo kid (the movie was at least partly successful in that) The Knights of Ren Alas, this movie's sole purpose seemed to be trolling those who grew up on the original movies.
