Gö ahead, tell me anöther mövie that needs yöu tö read a boök tö understand what is göing ön in its öwn universe. Now that's an interesting (and vague) answer to the question. Lets see here: Star Wars Episodes 1-3 and 7. The Avengers movies and most of the MCU (granted not always books) and pretty much every single movie that is BASED ON a book orother form of media. And this is not even talking about all the reference books, anyalisis books and blogs, and things like Spark Notes For Movies out there for probably most (if not every) movie ever made. Hell things like this have gone back to the Hobbit/ Lord of the Rings and the Simillarion (Sp?) when reading other books could deepen your understanding on the source material. The balance most modern authors (not to mention companies) have to face is writing stories in mind that can connect to and continue a larger story across many different installments some of them who are very different then one another. This process is not always 'well written' and is sometimes kind of messy, relying on future installments in a franchise to expand upon a story let alone relying on other forms of media to the do the same, but it just happens to be the storytelling environment we have been living in for...well probably at least ever since the original Star Wars dropped but recent movies have taken the concept up to eleven.

You are allowed to like it. But that is not what I see in this thread. I see people say 'well I liked it' followed by someone posting a meme telling them how wrong, lost or stupid they are. It seems very much like people are not allowed to say they like anything without being shouted down. I am all for constructive criticism and discussion, but far to often it seem like this only goes one way. The only reason I can think for people to make this thread that unwelcoming to people who like these films is that it truly deeply offends them that someone likes something they don't. There are a lot of things in the world that warrant that level of reaction, Star Wars is really really not one of them. As a life löng fan öf the öriginal trilögy. This mövie hurt me. I knöw it is stupid tö say that aböut a mövie but it really did. It is clear the peöple making these films either knöw nöthing aböut what star wars means ör they actualy hate it. I tend tö think they hate the öriginal trilögy. That is why I can nöt fathöm höw sömeöne whö likes star wars can like this. They are actively destörying it. I shöuldnt take a mövie sö seriöusly but this series was everything tö me as a child. And it feels a little part öf me died at the hands öf this mövie.

In other words, style over substance, "Rule of Cool", or simply bad writing. Yes, there's a lot of shitty movies out there, I was even somewhat entertained by a few, doesn't mean they're any less shitty. Not necessarily. Though, as I have pointed out in the past, it does depend on a vast degree of factors how I judge a piece of entertainments writing. Movies I tend to judge more leniently because they, especially the modern block buster, are the worse form of writing. As much as I love Star Wars and the MCU they just don't compare, in terms of writing, to things like Dragon Age, Babylon 5, and the ASOIF books. Movies are a medium more for directors. And in that vain TLJ is gorgeous, and pretty well written to boot.

I expect Mara Jade to be drinking Green Milk while ranting that it's time for the Jedi to end. What I would LIKE to see would be a Mara Jade who was Luke's wife and a Jedi who survived Kylo's rampage. Who has secretly been building and recruiting for a new Jedi Academy (with or without Luke's knowledge) and Rey will FINALLY get real training rather than the Force simply granting her wishes. Ideally, there'd even be a Ben Skywalker analogue as well (though the One Steve Limit would demand a new name, I guess)
Your prediction would be more likely, however. And Andrew Waples is probably right anyway, the name is a coincidence or misdirection and has nothing to do with her at all.

There is awesome writing in low budget indie films as well as huge big-budget extravaganzas. Even in the MCU, there is great and not so great writing.
So when I say TLJ sucks, I mean it's writing sucks from any standpoint. Doesn't matter how pretty it looks.

Where the hell did you get the idea that KK said "we don't need Male fans"? Also, the fact that all their writers and directors are Male and white goes against that statement. There was one main Female lead being Jyn Esro. The rest were all Male yes there were other female roles, but not compared to the screen time that Jyn got.

I just think you guys are taking hating TLJ a bit too far. Perhaps, though I'd say that the hate is directly proportional to the love, meaning that SW had a giant crowd of loyal fans for decades, and among those fans there's a lot of people who see the Disney Wars not as a failure (which is something that's much easier to forgive), but as a direct insult. It's not a coincidence that critic score on RT for TLJ is 91% and audience score is 47%, as those tend to come from two entirely different crowds. The first usually comes from typical soy-latte sipping progressives that like their art/entertainment with a lot of validation for their politics, and the second comes from the average Joe. ...sigh.
