Not sure if this has been posted yet. Wisecrack makes a lot of great analysis content and this video breaks down the mixed message problem that plagues the film. TLDW: The film doesn’t go all the way with its subversion, it just kind of shrugs at the last second and backtracks.
Don’t be a hero (Except do!), self-sacrifice is good (Except Not!), The Jedi conception of the Force is flawed and they should end (Except we totally need more of them!), Rey needs to stop looking to the past for answers (Except she absolutely will steal those ancient Jedi texts and learn from those, which will totally undermine Yoda’s entire spiel to Luke)

With all the "politics" in the past few pages...here's Lucas' inspiration for the OT and saga as a whole.

Not sure if this has been posted yet. Wisecrack makes a lot of great analysis content and this video breaks down the mixed message problem that plagues the film. TLDW: The film doesn’t go all the way with its subversion, it just kind of shrugs at the last second and backtracks. I never had a problem myself with explorations of the Grey, I always found characters like Jolee Bindo, Kreia, Kyle Katarn, Revan, Vergere, and others just as interesting and perhaps more so than traditional Jedi and Sith. I like them too... but I actually think the extended universe content and now TLJ grossly misinterpret the force as presented in the OT. I always saw the Light as synonymous with balance. To be a true Jedi was to find balance in yourself. A lot of people I thought actually misinterpreted the Jedi philosophy in the prequels as being about the repression of emotions when really it was about not allowing emotions to make your decisions for you. It’s a bit like Stoic philosophy, which holds that control over one’s passions is a necessity for virtuous decision making. There’s an interesting Clone Wars episode where Yoda goes on a vision quest of sorts (I actually think Lucas had a lot of input in that episode). He is told that he needs to confront the darkness in himself. Initially he scoffs, he’s a Jedi Grandmaster, but the mysterious glowy force beings show he still has darkness. He is only able to proceed once he accepts the darkness as part of him and reconciling it with himself, thus depriving it of any power over him. That’s pretty much exactly what this video describes as what we should be doing. That is what a true Jedi is, as I’ve always understood it. The Dark Side is a corruption of the balance. A great example I think would be Atris of Kotor 2. Atris believed that she alone was pure and able to continue the legacy of the Jedi. Her hubris made her dark, not an extremity of the light. I kinda wish this interpretation was more common.

Ive been drinking all day, what are yöu asking me? That yöu liberals dönt see the mövie as left leaning because it is yöur blindness to authörity value? Well, I'm wondering if that definition of "left-leaning" works for you. What did you figure makes TLJ left-leaning? The fact that it is.

Hmmm... Iv'e heard similar interpretations before, that rather than "The light side of the Force" and "The Dark side of the Force" there's just "The Force" and that the "Dark Side" is a perversion of it. Come to think of it, was the idea of a “light side” ever explicitly mentioned in the OT?

Come to think of it, was the idea of a “light side” ever explicitly mentioned in the OT? I don't think so. Luke says "is the Dark Side stronger?" Yoda: "quicker, easier more seductive." But that's about it. Besides the prequels, ironically I think it was Han that says "holding together the dark side and the light." The "light side" is never stated, but its obviously very much implied in the OT.

I found this and thought of this thread... Hero or terrorist? Base students host trial of Luke Skywalker with JAG helpBy MARTIN EGNASH | STARS AND STRIPES Published: May 1, 2018 VILSECK, Germany — In a courtroom far, far, away, Luke Skywalker was found not guilty of charges of galactic terrorism by base elementary school children during an educational trial on Tuesday. The trial, part of the base’s “Law Day,” had two fourth-grade classes act as judges, lawyers and the jury in the trial of Skywalker. Base Judge Advocate General Corps lawyers assisted each side in making their case. “The primary benefit is to give them an understanding of the American legal system of justice that may be different than what they see in the movies or on TV,” said Dr. Bill Hunter, the teacher in charge of the program. “This allowed students to experience the legal system in a way in which they can understand with characters that many of them already know.” “I think this is a great opportunity for the kids to learn about how trials work, and what lawyers do. I mean, as a kid, how many chances to you ever get to talk to a lawyer and ask questions?” said Capt. Benjamin Hewett, the JAG representing Skywalker’s defense. The trial began with the prosecution’s JAG, Capt. Brett Grantham, representing the Galactic Empire, telling the jury the horrors of what happened to the Death Star, and accusing Luke Skywalker of blowing it up, killing 5,999 “innocent stormtroopers.” Among the prosecution’s witnesses were Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vader and the only stormtrooper who escaped the Death Star’s destruction, all played by fourth-graders. ...

So apparently there’s a new canon Star Wars book: Last Shot? Anyway, I read it so you don’t have to: It feautures Han Solo and Lando Calrissian and takes place a few years after the battle of Jakku. Ben is a toddler and barely in the story, though he almost gets killed by an insane culinary droid later. Han is very stressed about not feeling prepared for fatherhood. Lando is the proud owner of very successful droid manufacturing company based on Cloud City these days. His emotional journey is about figuring out his feelings and giving up his playboy lifestyle to go steady with his Twi’lek girlfriend. He also learns some new things about his old pilot droid friend, the one from the upcoming film, who appears in flashbacks.
Anyway, the villain is an insane Utapauan (yes that planet Grievous fled to in RotS with the sinkholes) scientist named Fyzen Gor who thinks droids are superior beings and has taken up the habit of grafting organic body parts onto his droids. He has a bunch of attack bots made from modified medical droids and wookie body parts.
Anyway, Fyzen tries to threaten Lando with a massacre on Cloud City unless he finds something he stole from Fyzen ten years ago. Only it wasn’t Lando, Han just hadn’t changed the Millenium Falcon’s registration at the time. So they borrow a slicer from the New Republic intelligence service, who is an Ewok.
Yes, you read that right. The slicer is an Ewok who joined up with the Rebels after Endor and turned out to be a quick study with computers. She’s also Chewbacca’s biggest fan since he saved her sister on Endor. Getting a chance to see him is why she agreed to help. It is actually kinda cute. The moment she sees him she makes a beeline for him and latches onto his leg like a toddler. Chewbacca was bemused. He came along because of the aforementioned wookie child butchering Fyzen was doing.
Anyway, it turns out Fyzen’s insane plan is to release a virus to all droids produced by Lando’s company using the production specs he stole while he was on Cloud City. The virus forces them to kill all organically they see. But to transmit it he needs the device he’s missing. Ultimately they are able to track it down, kill Fyzen, learn more about themselves, and it has a happy ending.
There is a subplot where Han and Lando have to infiltrate an old imperial prison moon where the New Republic fleet is in a standoff with the Warden, who is violating the terms of his amnesty. They both express their displeasure with Mon Mothma’s overzealous efforts to demilitarize the New Republic. The fleet is under equipped to deal with substantial threats.

This "lesson" combined with how later Luke spares Vaders life are some of the reasons why I find TLJ's Luke compeletely unbelievable. Also, I find KOTOR2's interpretation of the force, jedi, sith and everything star wars the most sophisticated and interesting. Obsidian had some great writers...

Long answer: Well, that was the whole point of going into that cave and confronting with that vision. Yoda wanted to teach him a lesson and the lesson wasn't about fighting Vader, but about Luke realising that he has the same "darkness" in him. If he was that earlier naive Luke, then maybe he would have killed Vader. Instead he learned the lesson so he was able to control his emotions and resist Palpatine.
