I was referring to the moment after he defeats Vader and throws his lightsaber away. That was the submission. Ah, okay. My apologies them. I thought you were referring to the entire sequence of events in the Emperor's chambers. No problem. I think that is Luke's finest moment and the actual moment he becomes a master. Knowing when to give in is always the most difiicult lesson in life.

Btw are all TLJ fans here also MEA fans? Maybe. I enjoyed The Last Jedi as I did Mass Effect Andromeda, flawed as both were. But I loved the original Trilogies (both Episodes IV-VI and Mass Effect 1-3).

Quite contrary, we love Star Wars, warts and all. Which is more than can be said about bitter group that hangs out in here. Well, good for you. I hope you'll be able to support by yourselves the SW universe from now on. Oh I will. In a way I had my time of bitterness when RotJ was released. Being teenage boys me and my friends didn't accept the cute and cuddlies. Well I matured, got kids of my own and introduced Star Wars to them. So when it was time to watch RotJ with them I did, and liked it. Nothing will of course top the feeling of seeing the first movie in the cinema in '77. Or the posters before it was released and wondering about that movie. It looked cool. So when we finally went to see it, my friends and their fathers, my dad, we were all pretty excited. Good times. Still TLJ had a lot of that feeling. Only I'm not a kid anymore.

In that moment you mention however Luke still has a moment of weakness. Multiple really. Just saying. True, but at no time does he take his light saber back to strike the Emperor down or even to defend himself. Just saying. He in fact, throws it away.

Well, him doing that did cause him to be severely electrocuted by the Emperor for a while until The Power of Please had Vader save him, so maybe like other electroshock therapies he remembered the pain so didn't want to make the same 'mistake' when it came to dealing with Ben.

The fact that this is constantly compared to what Luke did in TLJ is beyond me. In RotJ he's in a room with the devil incarnate and his second in command, they constantly taunt him, tempt him and threaten the lives of his friends while rebel forces are getting decimated. Despite that, he keeps turning off his lightsaber, refusing to fight and appealing to the "good" inside Vader. He gets angry only for a brief moment when Vader discovers Leia is his sister and makes an even more personal threat. Then he disarms (literally) Vader turns off his lightsaber again and throws it away. Also he doesn't kill neither Vader nor Sidious. Vader kills Sidious (thus fulfilling the profecy, I suppose) and then dies himself most likely due to force lighning he took and taking helmet off. Anyway, Luke stayed a good Jedi in the hardest possible setting and he succeded fully because of that. --- 30 years later he sneaks up on his nephew in his sleep and has a "moment of weakness" standing over his bed with a drawn out weapon. Moment of weakness provoked by a scary vision. Then he leaves his friends/relatives and goes to an island to hang out with space-cows and porgs, waiting for death. ...but not before he left pieces of a map leading to his location all over the galaxy. What fucking "assumptions" does one have to make sense of that ?

I'm distinctly certain i didn't call you a kid though. I would most likely qualify as being a kid at heart as well, and there have been some first time experiences in movies, theatres and games etc for me as an adult, but at least to me there was another layer of strength in the emotional attachment then. Yes I will have to see Solo soon. I will of course feel weird without Harrison Ford but noone is forever young.

Watching that scene again, two things.
1. Such an amazing piece of music for that moment when Luke lashes out. It is a very powerful and emotional piece despite only lasting for about thirty seconds. Easily among the best music in Star Wars in my opinion, and very underappreciated compared to the other great pieces.
2. It's interesting how despite knowing Luke won't turn and having a golden opportunity to kill him(at 1:42 in the second video) Vader refrains and that restraint costs him the fight. Don't know if intentional or not but I like to think it is a subtle way of the two halves of Vader fighting each other, with Anakin momentarily taking control, like we see in other parts of the movie, to stop himself from killing his son even if that means he dies.

I really love being called a kid, as I was a teenager when ANH came out, which makes me older than you. But probably I still am a kid at heart.
Anyhow, keep up the good work: Watching A New Hope (before it was called 'A New Hope') aged 13, near the front on the big screen was an amazing thing. Hard to forget it (and repeated many many times on the small screen).

VHS rental, early 90s. But before that, on the Muppet Babies cartoon show - everytime they opened the closet, it would always show cool Star Wars movie clips.

Raised on Star Wars from the cradle. Don't remember not seeing it. Luckily, I was seven when the Special Editions were released in theaters, so I got to experience the original trilogy in a theater once in my life. It was great. At my theater, they handed out a Luke Skywalker action figure, which I destroyed over the next few years. RIP Luke action figure. Was nine when the prequels hit, and Jar-Jar was hysterical to me. He still manages to get a chuckle out of me. I have never once understood the hate leveled towards him. I understand hating the Ewoks more than Jar-Jar(mostly because the Ewoks should have been Wookiees). Still the Ewoks made for an effective Vietnam War parable, and RotJ remains my absolute favorite Star Wars movie. The only better film overall, in my view, is Aliens.
