I decided to get an outside opinion and asked my husband about this. He fits a lot of the Denis Leary song "Asshole." He likes football, porno, books about war. He's completely hetero as well. He owns a gun, ect. He drives a pickup, listens to heavy metal and has long hair. He's a gamer although he usually doesn't play many video game RPGs. We're D&D nerds. I have been trying to get him into ME though. When I asked over IM how he felt about more transgendered characters in video games, he simply sent me this gif in response: He's not opposed to it, he just doesn't care one way or the other. I'm wondering how many other posters feel like that.
Oh my god that GIF
Will never use it, but I think its great
Its as if he knew there would be a frozen fan in this thread...
I... kinda think the same way???
When I say kinda, its because it doesnt affect me really, when I saw the cutscene with Krem I was like "huh, interesting" because it isnt something I was especially expecting
I think its good that they do it, but im not like "they must have a transgender character in every game"... I support them doing it, but im neutral... does that make sense???

I get your meaning. I figure the BioWare writers are going to write whomever and whatever they feel like. I think the fans of any given medium tend to give themselves more credit for influencing writers than they deserve. If they want to include more LGBT+ characters, great, cool. Variety is the spice of life and all of that. If they want more guys that are straight and white with model looks, awesome. I can make some requests but I don't want them to feel forced to write anything. Whether or not they have been "forced" to write more LGBT+ due to some sort of all-encompassing liberal "agenda" is apparently a huge subjective of contention. It's one that I personally don't agree with but the PoV exists. <shrug>

There are lots and lots and lots of games which have no lgbt characters in whatsoever and get no criticism from it... no one is forced to write anything, and neither are people pushing their views Like I write stories regularly and I think I can only name 1 or 2 characters who are lgbt out of the many documents I have on my pc which are stories/miscellaneous story chapters, and im a lesbian, and been writing/trying to write since I was like 12... it isnt exactly like my sexuality or anything else about me influences the characters I write or the plot of the stories I think some people just see threats to their ideology everywhere, and I cant understand that point of view... there are people who think that every person who disagrees with them becomes their enemy and is trying to force their opinions on them
My general attitude towards things is, as you said, variety is the spice of life, and gaming is kinda far from the "teenage guys playing violent video games" thing which I was expecting when I first joined the forum and its important to be inclusive, and theres no harm in doing that at all
I dont really get involved with "liberal agendas" or... well... the opposite to that??? I keep myself out of stuff like that altogether... have no interest in it at all, but lots of people even on the forum (well, mostly on the forum since ive never seen an example of it anywhere else) apparently try to insult/make fun of that/are generally insensitive towards it regularly, and I personally think its starting to ruin the forum especially since talking about groups of people including political ones about the same grievances excessively is supposed to like not happen since it says it in the forum suggestions but eh... I still dont understand the thing of seeing enemies anywhere, then again it would probably or well maybe be more clear to me if I knew what a "liberal agenda" actually was
To me, video games are a type of art and a type of storytelling... and those things regularly kinda... get people to think about real world issues in a non-real way, and I think Bioware kinda do it well... not pushing things from what ive seen and not putting people on a pedestal but saying "oh yeah, these people exist too" and the way some people act youd expect that satan was playing with Bioware and im like for being inclusive and accepting??? for having a transgender person who isnt a main character who has a very very short cutscene and just generally exists in the game and thats all???

I like your husband Natashina he has the right mindset. I always thought that I must be some kind of supreme being (or just a cold bastard) in the regard that if it don't concern me or it won't affect me, I don't care. Even if I have written a lot in this forum and discussed things irl, I only do it because some people are idiots (and I'm pretty sure some of them failed to evolve). P.s no name mentioned so it don't counts as insults right? If so I will edit my post.

ASDAKFKKKKJJ... That is a literal representation of the out-loud sound I made after I read this post. And then I told myself 'don't bother, move on...' Clearly, it didn't work. Anyway, I'm going to pass on commenting about most of what's here, but there's one thing I'd like to address, because I see it too often. When it come to which pronoun someone wants to use for themselves... What the fuck do you care? Seriously. Calling someone a 'he' just because that person wants you to - does it affect you in any way personally? Diminish the quality of your life? Ruin your day? And don't give me that pseudo-altruistic bullshit about not wanting to 'encourage' someone's delusions or whatever. If you truly believe that gender dysphoria is a psychological condition that needs to be cured (I have to wonder, do you feel that 'gay' can be cured too?) the last thing that person needs is some random asshole telling them who they are, and belittling and passing judgement on them. If you truly believe it's a psychological condition, maybe you leave that person's treatment to an actual psychologist and stay out of it. Or at least, read up on some actual psychology before you determine that it's okay to dismiss someone's identity just to prove a point. Why pass on commenting about most of it? I'd like to hear what you have to say. This forum is about discussion right? So let's discuss. It was not my intention to belittle or demean anyone. I was simply expressing my views on the subject. I don't believe that someone can change their sex. Does a male to female trans menstruate? Can they produce eggs to be fertilized? Can they get pregnant and carry the baby to term? Can they produce breast milk? What happens to the Y chromosome? Does it disappear? Can a female to male produce sperm? Does the X change into a Y? A man can behave like what society says a woman behaves like but that doesn't make him a woman. He can say he feels like a woman in a mans body but what exactly does that mean? How does a woman feel? What does it feel like to be a woman? I'm a man yet i can't tell anyone what it feels like to be a man. I have nothing to compare it to. This is all i know. I have male genitalia naturally so that makes me a man. That's about it. I'll take your advice though and do some more research on the subject. Just because I think im right doesn't mean that I am. Why not comment on the rest? Short answer: I actually didn't have time to respond to all of it. Also, typically when people post this sort of thing it's because they want their opinion heard. Full stop. Not because they actually care about the response. Since you seem to, here goes... I'll put the parts from your original post in bold, and then respond. Body dysmorphia is a mental condition. I imagine that in the future we would have some kind of cure for this so that people can escape the torment of thinking they're something they're not. Although there's certainly outliers (as there are scientists who say they don't believe in climate change if you look hard enough), for the most part there's a consensus among the psychology/psychiatry community that attempting to 'cure' gender dysmorphia through therapy not only does not work, but negatively impacts those individuals far beyond their original condition ever did. They end up feeling even more depressed, and even worse about themselves than before. The so-called success stories tend to end with those people suffering from deep depression the rest of their lives, or, in extreme cases, committing suicide. On the other hand, physically becoming the gender they identify with, or at least being able to live as that gender if they can't/don't want to undergo medical treatment, makes them happier. And, since this particular condition really has no negative impact on society (vs. a mentally ill person prone to violence), what's the harm? I mentioned the concept of 'cure the gay away' because I see it as similar. It doesn't work, it only makes the 'curee' feel worse, and their being gay isn't hurting anyone. So why not just let it be? Krem. Ugh. Krem is a woman. What is the point of all the male pronouns? How are men and women treated differently in Dragon Age anyway? Such pointless foolishness. She has tits and bleeds monthly. No man does that. She is simply pretending. Why encourage her behavior by going along with it?
As someone else explained, men and women are treated differently in Tevinter, and that was an issue. As a woman, Krem couldn't rise in the military's ranks, and couldn't support 'her' family. But gender identity is about more than just what tasks society deems acceptable for you to carry out. And gender identity is a lot more complex than biological functions. I'm a woman, but am unable, for health reasons, to get pregnant or carry a baby to term. Does that make me less of a woman? I also have Asperger's and brain scans show that autistic women's brain activity more closely resembles that of non-autistic men than women. So even my brain patterns likely resemble those of a man's. So, again, am I less of a woman? I 'have tits and bleed monthly.' I could also count the number of female friends I've had in my life on one hand because I have a hard time relating to them. When someone asks me to describe my gender identity, I can honestly say 'I don't have one.' I don't feel female or male. Had I been born male, but with everything else about me unchanged, I'd be cool with that too. But I was born female, and like female clothing and makeup and all that other fun stuff, so for the sake of convenience we'll call me a girl. My psychologist assures me that as long as I'm happy with that, it's fine. Gender just isn't that simple. And as far as 'pretending' goes - it goes way deeper than that. Pretending suggests it's just some costume you can take off. Maybe for a professional drag queen, it can be, where once the wig and make-up come off, she's a he again. That's not what Krem is. Stick him in a dress and he's not going to feel anymore female than you would. People that suffer from this condition need psychological treatment. Not surgery. Post op regret is a real thing. Google it.
Which is why a really good psychologist being there before, during, and after a transition is really important. And while post-op regret might be a real thing, lifelong depression and suicide are also a real thing among transpeople too. Especially when they feel like they can't live as the gender they identify with. And again, if you genuinely feel compassion toward people and worry for their welfare, most (all?) transgender people will tell you how painful it is to not be accepted. Whether it's by their friends and family, or some stranger who insists on calling them by the wrong pronoun. What would surgery accomplish anyway? Going under the knife to resemble something doesn't turn you into it.So... children born with deformities shouldn't undergo plastic surgery either? I mean, they're still deformed, right? They were born that way. Going under the knife doesn't change that. If nature decides to make you with a cleft lip, you should just deal with that. Edit: ...and typos fixed. It actually wasn't that bad

For me it's like this: In life, there are all sorts of different folk. If games also contain all sorts of different folk, that's just fine and dandy. So debates about 'type A people are hawt' give me more and 'type B people break my immersion don't shove them down my throat' leave me cold. Discussions like this are amusing for about, I don't know, 12 pages. Beyond that, BioWare can have different folk in their games as much as they like as long as they are interesting. And if it is such a big deal that your game is being 'spoilt' by characters 'not like you' then please play another game...

He's not opposed to it, he just doesn't care one way or the other. I'm wondering how many other posters feel like that. I'm one of them. Like I said many pages ago, a character's genitals/gender/orientation/color/whatever is completely irrelevant to me as long as that character doesn't exist to be the writer's mouthpiece about social issues, or kowtow to any demographic. Let the character be defined by their substance, not their identity.

Why can't women advance in the Tevinter military? What possible reason could there be to limit their progress?

What possible reason could there be to limit their progress? For the same reason why men can't progress far in the southern Chantry: It's the way it's always been done. <shrug> I need to dig further into the lore in order to come up with a better answer though. I do know that Tevinter has always been a patriarchy in contrast to the rest of the setting, particularly southern Thedas. Otherwise, I'm not certain.

I'd also like to point out that we should be careful not too easily fall into this false dichotomy between people that would like more lgbt characters or less, between those who want more diversity or less. No need to see immediately the worst.
It's not because you complain about the writting, that you are not for diversity ( you can agree or not, but as long as your respect the poster ). I've seen that kind of tactics a bit too much in some posts. I do not think that Krem was that well written in some parts, I'm myself pro diversity and yet I think it could have been better handled, I think there are some fair critics. The same for the personal quest of Dorian. Let's not take into hostage the debate.
I do not consider racists those who think that marvel handle very badly the diversity. It's not because some think that Jimmy Olsen should remain white, that omg they want less diversity. No, It's actually a fair critic to me, Jimmy Olsen in Superman is irish, we should respect the lore. Don't see why that changed with supergirl. Whether we agree or not, this is a reasonable thought. Also, not very fond of replacing a white guy by a black guy, just because you have no idea where to put a black actor. This is very lame. At this point, no need to put one. I'd rather have a black character with a true role than what was done to be honest.
@ evamitchelle : Thanks, I was in hurry, didn't check my post.

- If I hear anyone talk about "pronouns" in the game, I'm not buying it. - If I hear about a transgender bathroom aboard the ship, I'm not buying it. - If they force a liberal college course into the game taught by a transgender NPC, I'm not buying it. - Adding a transgender character will break immersion since it was never part of the original vision of Mass Effect. But, in all fairness I have to ask: How can the game introduce a transgender into Mass Effect Andromeda without it coming off as tokenistic pandering?Hi luzarius , we were expecting you . You can buy games based on your choices, that's up to you. I'll attempt to answer your last point. First, we don't actually know whether MEA will contain a trans character, all of this is just speculation. Introducing a trans character is no more tokenistic than a black / white / male / female / human / krogan / gay / straight character, if that character has an interesting story to tell within the Mass Effect setting. As for a trans character breaking immersion, that is no more a thing than introducing female Turians, Ashley with long hair, and thermal clips, none of which were part of the original vision of Mass Effect. I see this comparison made frequently, and I don't agree with it for the following reason. A person's visible gender or ethnicity is just that-- visible to the eye. Transgender status is often not visible to the eye, and an effort of some sort has to be made to make it known. Since someone's transgender status is likely not important to Mass Effect's plot, much like being black, white, male, female, etc... such a shoe-horned announcement of this status can be off-putting. To take your equivalency to a ridiculous extreme, imagine a character announcing, "I'm black, guys," or "I'm a white woman, everyone." It's silly, out of place and irrelevant. To many of us, who have no horse in the race outside of VGs, shoehorning transgender characters into a game like ME could seem obnoxious in precisely the same fashion. "You're transgender? Congratulations! You're telling me why? Why does this matter to the plot?" If they choose to include a transgender character in a ME game, they will need a good story reason for doing so, or it will come across as lame and out of place, story-wise. They will likewise need to take care in how it's presented, to avoid hamfisted awkwardness, which does no one any favors.

So far I can see that one reason people are saying that a Transsexual person don't fit in ME-universe is that there is no reason for them to speak of it therefore there is no way to know that they are transsexual. Well, there is at least ONE way, make a LI transexual. The problem is then gone, because then that person would like to tell the MC that they are transexual when they start getting feelings for each other. the problem is all the people that will say that they have been "forced" to romance an transperson. But that is not the problem I am solving.

And if it is such a big deal that your game is being 'spoilt' by characters 'not like you' then please play another game... I agree with this when it comes to the first installment of a series. When making a new IP they should listen to exactly what you wrote up above. ..... but once you make the 1st game, the 2nd and 3rd installment should be consistent with the ideals introduced in the 1st. The writer must stay true to what is in his heart & soul and not force himself to pander just because people were offended or not included. Self censorship leads to upsetting your existing fanbase. Once the fanbase detects a fake entity forced into the game, you'll upset them.
Why am I against pandering? It's not because I'm homophobic or transphobic, it's because the content produced from pandering is usually of the poorest quality. Kaidan Alenko being gay was LOW quality LGB content. Cortez was LOW quality gay content. It does more harm than good! What's an example of LGB characters that are not token and not considered pandering?
Dorian from Inquisition is a good example or Omar Little from the Wire.
I can't deny the wisdom and logic of this post. This is how I would add a trans character if I was a writer. Here is how I would add a transgender: What is the transsexual dream? It's to become a convincing person of the opposite sex. If I was bioware I would put in the hottest transgender imaginable, literally a tall, buxom blonde but the only difference is she has a dick, but when you go to romance her she tells you she has a dick. THAT WOULD BE HIGHLY ENTERTAINING on so many levels. So I essentially agree with your approach here, but you CANNOT, I REPEAT CANNOT make the transgender character look UGLY. It has to look like a hot, supermodel transgender that is no different from a real woman.

That feeling when you write a 1000 word essay to reply to an Internet forum topic and then delete the entire thing because you realise changing people's minds is not your job and you should be having fun on your birthday not arguing with the "alt-right" Internet. Yes it's my birthday and I'm a little drunk.

Dorian from Inquisition is a good example or Omar Little from the Wire. Yeah... No one person gets to decide if gay content is high quality or low quality and especially not a straight person. Kaidan is the best gay romance in any Bioware game. These are the facts according to me. See how that works? So there is truly offensive and then there is you. We should be treat a pre-op trans woman like a circus freak for so you can be "HIGHLY ENTERTAINED" ?? I'm done.

luzarius, some interesting ideas in your last post. You're pointing out the inconsistent treatment from ME1 to ME3 and I think you're right to call it out. Where I'd differ is that whilst you are treating the standard of ME (1) as a level of artistic integrity to follow (because that was the standard the game set), I would see ME (1) as a missed opportunity compared to later iterations. But hang on I might hear you ask, that would show up earlier ME installments as having gotten it wrong and it means later games are retconning the vision of the series? Yes, I think they are, but for the sake of allowing people to have choices, that's a retcon worth making. You might say it isn't for reasons of artistic integrity. I'd argue the artistic integrity on ME (1) wasn't ready because a social journey in gaming was still underway, and a journey that needed to happen to allow everyone to enjoy the game. TL;DR The model evolved through the series. Someone highly focused on consistency might hate that, the way that Qunari grew horns after DAO in Dragon Age (and Klingons grew bumpy heads) but there it is. Assessments of quality will vary, but you have to start somewhere. To those who say 'don't do it at all if you can't do it well', I would say: 'you don't know how good it is until you've done it, so do it'...

That feeling when you write a 1000 word essay to reply to an Internet forum topic and then delete the entire thing because you realise changing people's minds is not your job and you should be having fun on your birthday not arguing with the "alt-right" Internet. Yes it's my birthday and I'm a little drunk. Why care about them, nobody will change their mind anyway. SO HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

So you believe that the only REAL WOMEN are those that are "literally a tall, buxom blonde" and the other are what, fakes? And we are back to the point that YOU (or anybody else) think you know what is ugly and what is beautiful. Isn't it the creators that decide that? You know, from their "heart and soul". And I'm don't even going to discuss the fact that you see Transsexuals as a joke. And for all your talk about being a person that is "highly skilled" at using logic, you don't seem to be able to use it very well.

We have a new galaxy to explore with so many possibilities but BioWare is going to give everyone generic gears of war inspired combat, subpar level design that cannot encourage strong exploration because they don't know how to make an interesting map or locales, basic quest design structure that's been surpassed in the 90s, a cinematic story with animations that are a decade old and yet all people seem to care about is the genitalia of the NPCs.

<snip> And for all your talk about being a person that is "highly skilled" at using logic, you don't seem to be able to use it very well. I know, right? I got excited that I was going to be involved in a "logic game" with a "highly skilled" opponent and then he just didn't reply to any of my points. <insert sad face emoji> <insert winky face emoji right after that>

So you believe that the only REAL WOMEN are those that are "literally a tall, buxom blonde" and the other are what, fakes? If you want to sell transgenders to mainstream then you're going to need extremely beautiful transgenders to sell it. I understand tactics & strategy. You liberals don't seem to have this way of thinking. I could get transgenderism to be accepted by mainstream, but my methods would be extremely shallow. They would work though. My methods would get the job done. I want the game to succeed. Ugly doesn't help games succeed. Putting in a normal transgender person who still looks like a man trying to dress as a woman would be EXTREMELY distracting & unfortunately disturbing. I'm being honest here man. Transgenders must be held to the same beautiful standards used by Hollywood, ACCEPT THIS. Dude, look at this from a FANTASY point of view. What is a transsexual fantasy? You did not answer this question. It's for a guy who is a man to become a woman or vice versa. PUT THAT FANTASY INTO THE GAME. The fantasy of being an extremely attractive transgender who is desired by straight men.
I would want it to have a serious yet harmless comical tone. It would break the ice. My arguments are rooted in a logic that could get transgenders to become mainstream in gaming. Give me a better way to introduce transgenders that would be accepted by mainstream? I can predict your counter argument based upon what you've already written. You're going to say that it's not even about selling transgenders to mainstream. I'm telling you IT IS, you need mainstream to buy the game. The more copies they sell, the more $$$ they get to make future games with more transgender content.
