I mean, with 20-some years of Star Trek, 8 live-action Star Wars movies (plus two television series), Dr. Who, Babylon 5, Stargate, Sid Meyers Andromeda, Alien, Predator, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, The Fifth Element, Marvel's Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, etc, you are going to have some overlap on what bipedal aliens look like. I'm not bothered. Their face looks completely different, and that's where you should be looking! There eyes are down here, Dutch. Quit looking at their head tentacles! How rude.

Actually they look more like the Nautolan. Also Hi Dutch. Yeah that's what I thought when I first saw it. Kind of like someone at Bioware said... Hey, you know Asari look like Twi'lek but have shorter and more tendrils? And you know how Turians kind of like cats but not really like cats? What if made something that was kind of like Nautolan but also like a cat?
I think they're pretty cool. And he's got a freakin' Tron monocle. Nothing not to like there. It's not unlike Mass Effect--or anything really--to do that. Krogans are like Let's start with Lieutenant Worf from Star Trek. Okay, now make it Duke Nukem. Okay now make it look like a bat in the face. Umm, more of a lizard. Hmm, now we're getting to close the dad from the Dinosaurs sitcom. Maybe even a Battletoad.
Whereas Salarians are like Hmm, let's make a Twizzler alien. Yeah Twizzlers are rad! Aw yiss, like a mango-colored Gumby. Okay, now let's sprinkle in some Roswell aliens.

And turian culture and asari culture are exactly like Tau and Eldar culture. It's almost like bioware's narrative shtick is taking classic archetypes from the genres and expressing them in new ways.

There is nothing wrong with getting inspiration from something else, as long as you succeed in making something decent. That wasn't what happened this time.

I'm more concerned about the not-Collectors, much more immersion breaking when it's basically the same race in the same IP

I dunno if I'd even consider the Collectors a race. Their whole hook was the reveal that they were just higher order reaper thralls. If these guys have their own motivation without being pawns trapped under some bigger bad's control then that's at least a step up.

very successful thread. I think people should be more skeptical of anything bioware these days. You're right. Because other devs nowadays are not fiddly fucking around and if they keep on doing repetitive methods of making games, they'll end up like the Japanese devs who's trying to stay relevant.

Well, I'd take Persona 5 over most of the AAA western games. Grouping all Japanese devs together is a dumb generalization. I do agree on remaining concerned (although if you like Bioware stuff, I don't why you should), but there's a different between what I see from many people that are corcerned and critical on Bioware and Dutch. As much as the distance between the MW and Andromeda.

I don't see why you're defending it. It's bait, unoriginal, quasi twilek, otherkin bait. Why do the aliens even need to be bipedal, so much media has been original, why not andromeda? Why are the Kett so much like reskinned collectors? And another, good point, which was unfortunately shut because people cannot seem to have mature discussions is that it would be nice if bioware added a little more diversity in terms of human races before considering aliens. Most of any human characters of consequence are white. Even your protagonist, supposedly your avatar, has to be saddled with a surname like Ryder.

Two easy solutions come to mind. 1. vote with your wallet 2. form a kick starter campaign and develop your own game.

I want them to show BioWare how it should be done because, clearly, those damn humans ought to be omniscient and super wealthy and make it just happen because, dammit, we want it! To be honest, I'd bet there are individuals out there capable of doing this stuff but we'd probably lose out big time on graphics to get all the desired RPG elements.

Hm... nose, mouth look like a chimp while those hose like appendages are from squids, imo. Bizarre looking aliens. You must be right... fish are cold blooded creatures.
I'm still looking for Bio to reveal our female romanceable Andromedian.

Aliens need to be bipedal because of how much it costs to make a video game and how cover-based shooters, which ME essentially is (with RPG mechanics) require that companions behave the same way for using cover and such. Devs don't have infinite time and money to make a centaur-like or jellyfish-like creature viable in a cover-based 3rd person shooter when it's only one of 7 potential squad mates anyway. That's just how game development works. I don't think the Kett seem like reskinned collectors. We don't really have enough information on them to make any kind of determination, but from what I can tell they seem to be less "organic" which I find interesting. Collectors seemed more like insects, Kett seem more like living rock or bone. And we haven't really seen either in action. The Collectors have a very simple intelligence or a hive mind (kind of hard to tell) and so the Kett may behave very differently. The point is, I don't think it's unoriginal. Did I see similarities between Twileks and the Angorans? Sure. Did it look like a complete rip off? Not at all. Their faces are very different, and if the only thing needed to be a complete rip off is "tentacles on their head" then I'm not sure what you would want entirely. An alien made of smoke with no face/body? A big insect thing? I mean those have been done before as well. Try, seriously try to come up with a completely original never-seen-before alien concept that works as a squadmate in a 3rd person cover-based shooter RPG. Do it. As for the point about representation, I feel that it's pretty diverse. We haven't seen the whole cast. We have no idea what ethnicity Jien Garson is. Bro/Sis/Papa Ryder can be any ethnicity we choose. Cora is white. Liam is African. Sloane Kelly is...sorry I'm really bad at this. South American? Assuredly not white, though. Have we seen any other humans? I'm trying to think, but I'm pretty sure the answer is no. So that's a possibility for 5 different ethnicities and we have...5 different ethnicities. Seems pretty good so far. Ryder is also a fine neutral name that people can use for many ethnicities. I mean it's not like there are famous non-white people with the last name Jordan (Michael) or Jones (Julio) or Johnson (David), and the list goes on an on. The point is to make a last name that is neutral, and they've done that, while also paying homage to an American space hero Sally Ride.
