Rule of Cool, nothing more.
I've given a pass on awesome visuals before. And as has already been mentioned, very few starships are actually designed with practical space allocation in mind. Real space travel can kind of suck, even if you've mastered artificial gravity and crazy propulsion drives. Better to go for pretty in this case.

Hopefully we can customize the appearance of the ship's cabin, to feel closer to home.

I'm guessing that the captain needs to compensate for his small... ship with a large bedroom. Seriously don't look for logic, Bioware needed a cool setting for romance scenes, they don't seem to really care about what makes sense. (i.e. unarmed Tempest and Nomad, wasteful design of space in the Tempest) So.... (read as what follows may not be safe for work) Less room for PEW PEW, more room for BANG BANG? Sorry, it just came into my head.

One thing I don't get in the mass effect universe is how on the one hand the ships are so compact and short on space that they have people hot bedding angled beds and cramped masses of bunks, then they have massive private bedrooms for one or two senior officers. Surely that would breed resentment in the ranks? Even if the officers had small rooms or there were a few rooms which were shared between two staff so cabins felt a bit more gradated rather than this massive jump. It's worth pointing out that the Pathfinder's Quarters are not the same as the Captain's Quarters. In Mass Effect 2 & 3, it made sense for Shepard's quarters to be a tad bigger, since Cerberus wanted things to be more luxurious and devs wanted the player to have their own spot on the ship. It makes sense for the Pathfinder too. The Pathfinder is literally the one in charge of finding a new world to colonize. His or her day-to-day consists of surviving hostile planets, fighting all sorts of dangerous wildlife, surviving attacks from native species, and surviving in general. The fate of his or her ark is in his or her hands. That's a ton of responsibility. If anyone deserves a good night's rest, it's the Pathfinder. Not to mention the one most likely having to deal with management and discipline of the crew and handling any drama that arises from living in such tight quarters when necessary and dealing with the political crap from the bosses on the Nexus. And you can bet the Pathfinder does have to do that. Pathfinder is the buffer between the politics and crew as well.

It may not be realistic but I'm certainly glad for it. It's exactly how -I- would want to see the stars. The reality of space travel (as we know it now, in RL anyway) kind of sucks. Seems really unpleasant. Reality often sucks, isn't that why we all play so many videogames? Besides, they need to incentivize people to aspire for the harder jobs... The pathfinder has to basically do the same job as everyone else while actually making decisions and being held accountable. You don't realize how difficult that is until you're in the position. But hey, do the harder job get the perks. A luxurious cabin for stargazin and alien bangin. Then again, I've read articles lately saying some new tech could get us to Alpha Centauri in 3 weeks and Mars in 3 days. If that's the case, maybe the viewing window on Normandy SR2 isn't so far-fetched. A lot could be possible in 160ish years from now.

I liked how romantic relationships were handled in Battlestar Galactica. This happened in the cramped compartments and bunks of a military vessel, and it worked. If you need large bedrooms and disco lights for romance scenes on a small exploration vessel your writing sucks.
The captains quarters on the Normandy was just ego stroking on a really embarrassing juvenile level, a small captains private room like those on sub marines would make much more sense- and thats what I hope they do with Tempest.

BioWare games are about stroking the player's ego, so that's only fitting.

It's about stroking certain writers' egos Very typical of pretty much any writer you'll ever meet. I don't really feel the jesusification of Shepard was something that made the writers gratified though. I think they expected it would resonate a lot with the players to feel so might the same way they expected we would love the ownership of being a leader of an organization in DA:I and a Super hero all the same.

To party the hardest, of course. I can only hope that is the communal area, because otherwise I would feel bad. Leaving my companions in cramped bunks while I have soft sheet to tug in it’s not really something I would do as the person responsible for their well-being, both in and out of the mission.

Of course, we'd have to call it a "Team Building Exercise" and make an awkward speech first, as civilian grownups do when they're having a sleepover... And then the beer and the cards and the braids. ... Actually, that's sort of been my experience with geologists in the field. Hopefully other scientists are cool too.

I agree, making other characters leave so things could happen in the bunks added to the drama. One of the best sex scenes in terms of tension was from Enemy at the Gates where it happened in the corridor with everyone turning a blind eye. Now I am not saying they should do that here but romance in close quarters makes sense and adds to drama/realism Also how do characters other than the Pathfinder engage in things if we say that a big room is required for romance... "I am sorry Sir, can we borrow your room for the next hour"?
