I liked how romantic relationships were handled in Battlestar Galactica. This happened in the cramped compartments and bunks of a military vessel, and it worked. If you need large bedrooms and disco lights for romance scenes on a small exploration vessel your writing sucks. The captains quarters on the Normandy was just ego stroking on a really embarrassing juvenile level, a small captains private room like those on sub marines would make much more sense- and thats what I hope they do with Tempest. I agree, making other characters leave so things could happen in the bunks added to the drama. One of the best sex scenes in terms of tension was from Enemy at the Gates where it happened in the corridor with everyone turning a blind eye. Now I am not saying they should do that here but romance in close quarters makes sense and adds to drama/realism Also how do characters other than the Pathfinder engage in things if we say that a big room is required for romance... "I am sorry Sir, can we borrow your room for the next hour"? They do it in the Nomad.

Since Ryder is both the captain of the Tempest and a Pathfinder and is the superior to the ship's crew, it stands to reason Ryder gets a superior cabin.
There are two additional reasons why our Ryders gets a larger and plush cabin. The first one is that our Pathfinder has a heavy load on her shoulders. The responsibility of finding a new home and making sure the Tempest, crew and squad mates survive hostiles environments requires the Pathfinder to have a way to wind down from the stress of it all. You cannot unwind in a confined space.
The second is psychological. The crew sees the larger size of the captains quarters as a confirmation that Ryder is their superior. Also, it doesn't hurt in the romance department either. Also, also, the artists went a bit overboard, imo, but it seems both the writers and artists agreed on the cabin layout. Plus, Bio mgt approved the concept. Regardless of some views, there is a hierarchical structure in a ship. In a ship, the captain is god. And, for a ship to function properly, there can be only one captain.

One thing I don't get in the mass effect universe is how on the one hand the ships are so compact and short on space that they have people hot bedding angled beds and cramped masses of bunks, then they have massive private bedrooms for one or two senior officers. Surely that would breed resentment in the ranks? Even if the officers had small rooms or there were a few rooms which were shared between two staff so cabins felt a bit more gradated rather than this massive jump. first off there is no Captain and second if there is one Bioware needs a damn lesson in Military Command structure . yeah ryder is suds captain

Some are more equal than others, no one else nearly has as much stress... sounds all very Orwellian and a good way to get a mutiny. Commanding officers don't get massive quarters in the context that their crew don't even have small ones. There is some disparity but not the massive one that we have seen.

As someone who manages an organization of 75 people, I do have an office about 50% larger than the managers who report to me. And all of those managers at least have solo offices, whereas many of the line staff have shared spaces of one kind or another. So hierarchy exists and there are some fairly legit reasons for differentials in facilities accommodation. But if I were choosing or designing my own ship, I would not do something so ostentatious as what appears to be the case in MEA, personally. Definitely sends the wrong message, IMO, like company cars and other conspicuous perks. So I agree that the current design as shown seems excessive.
And then I shrug and write that off as acceptable suspension of disbelief for story and scene purposes. They could shoot those scenes in tight quarters, but it gives them more options to have a more varied space. So I'm letting it go.

i am relatively certain that commanding officers on Navy ships (and certainly on civilian cruise ships) get relatively large living quarters. From what I can tell, the captain of some military vessels may have two separate living spaces: one that is right off of the bridge that is not particularly large, and is used as the main living space for the commanding officer who needs to be near the bridge at all times becasue he or she is never technically off duty; and one somewhere else on the ship which is quite a bit larger than any other living space that is used largely for purposes of entertaining, hosting, etc. I am basing this off of 30 minutes of internet searching, so take it as you will. I could not find any pictures of these rooms on military vessels, other than one specifically designed during the Kennedy administration to be particularly fancy and large.

A quick google search would show you that, yes, ship captains have larger living quarters than the crew. And that, yes, the difference in ME games is ridiculous. Andromeda looks to be an even worse offender on that count. At this rate, Andromeda 2 captain quarters will have a pool and a sauna.
For the most part, this is really a minor thing to suspend disbelief for. I say "for the most part" because it did bug me a bit that if you play Shepard as an inspirational leader they still live in a giant luxury room considerably bigger than the entire crew sleeping quarters.
Anyway, it's giant for gameplay reasons (people like collecting and stuff) because Bioware knows that a good part of their fanbase cares more about that than realism. It's a reasonable sacrifice.

A fancy dressed room isn't the issue, but I will tell you that a giant window represents a huge safety issue.
Quite ironically, the very first chapter of Mass Effect: Revelation had a lenghty passage about how windows aboard spaceships are kept to a minimium. Drew Karpyshyn literally saw this stuff coming, No wonder the writers are desperate to wipe out his legacy.

I don't think it's an actual window, I've been trying to see if the pictures we have of the outside of the Tempest we can see some windows and I don't see them so I tend to believe that the huge windows we've seen inside the Tempest are just screens showing what's outside through cameras.
