I love that velociraptor with the sexy voice. I generally like all the squadmates in ME, but Garrus (and James) are by far my favorites.

Gah, this is hard. In all honesty, I love all of them - except Jacob. Liara is my LI and total Bae. so I'll leave her out. I'd have to pick Garrus in that case - he is just the definition of best bro. Him and my FemShep are inseparable. Miranda comes a very close second, only losing out because Garrus has the advantage of being a full squaddie for 3 games. Shep was all paragon and having none of her Cerberus apologist nonsense, but she supported her and she ended up becoming like a sister to Shep. Garrus & Miranda were my team for the vast majority of ME2 outside of loyalty missions. Dream team. I love all the rest of them, too. I've never met a cast of characters that I liked so much.

Well, quite obvious who my favorite is, going by my profile picture. But as Shepard said 'it's always been you Ash, when I first saw you on Eden Prime, a woman that never gave up, losing her whole squad'. It's always been Ash. The squad mate that's high on a lot of people's top 3 'least favorite companion's' list. But I love her. She's very misunderstood, and you can tell from all the hate she gets. She has a very interesting back story with a lot of problems and issues. Yet she eventually overcomes most of that and turns out to be one of the most real companions in the series.
By 'real' I mean, genuine, albeit flawed, with doubts and questioning Shepard. But she is willing to adept and learn from the past, and from Shepard. She's no Garrus (love the guy though) who will just say yes and amen to whatever Shepard says. Ashley is as real as it's gonna get in Mass Effect. I wish people would see past her exterior, or some remarks she made. Despite the fact they did a horrible job in ME2 with her, and in ME3 to some extent, she'll always be my favorite.

Honestly, the people who are on the "most hated" lists also frequently appear on "most loved" lists. Garrus and Jacob seem to be exceptions there. I've noted Ashley, Kaidan and Liara rank among favorites (at least on this forum) but are also very hated.

Ashley is great. The first time I played I didn't like her at all because we were at odds on several issues, the most obvious one her distrust of aliens (the same aliens on the ship that I greatly valued). But the more often I played, the more she grew on me. I learned to respect her and overcome my reservations, she learned to get along with the aliens, also overcoming her reservations. It felt like we both learned from each other despite (or probably because of) our differences. And character development doesn't get much better than that. I also love her sarcastic comments.
My favourite is still Jack, but there was less development going on on my side because I could instantly relate to her.

I also really love Ash. She's always the VS for me, no disrespect to poor Kaidan. I didn't agree with her mistrust of aliens in ME1, but given her background it kinda made sense. Still prejudiced and unfair, but her situation with her grandfather was more than just "humanz rule" rhetoric. Plus, she really did come around, even by the end of ME1 - she had the squad's back. She broke my heart with her anger at Shep in ME2, but I think it only reinforces the other point that she's not truly anti-alien or racist, because she utterly rejects Cerberus - even to the point of turning her back on Shep. She actually seems to struggle with her thoughts on aliens, and eventually overcomes them. My heart was in my mouth during the ME3 confrontation, but thankfully I got through to her. Your point about Garrus is very true, and also Liara as well I think. While they are in my top 3 fave companions, Renegade Shep could probably burn down an orphanage and they'd be like "Oh dear. Ah well, had to be done."

I've even heard players with full on Renegade Sheps who fully endorse Miranda's Cerberus apologetics and side with Cerberus entirely saying they nuke Ash because she's racist. Er, what? Just to note that, like Ash, I don't believe Miranda to be racist either. Her reasons for being with Cerberus are also complex and understandable. But the mindset of that kind of player calling out Ashley - yeah, does not compute.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I had hoped people would look past what she has said in ME1. Calling her racist and then she calls Shepard out for working with the most racist organisation in the galaxy. Some people are just short-sighted I guess, they read or see what they want to, as long as it strengthens their believes.

I'll go with Samara.
- She's different from other asari - She's neither really good nor bad and i love 'grey' characters - She's an ancient badass biotic warrior - Her inner conflict with having to hunt down her own daughter - Has a tragic past, but doesn't dwell on it, showing her strength - Her view on love (from what we see from her 'romance') is complicated, making a possible romance with her stand out from the others (ok she's not a full-fledged romance option, but if she was she'd be my Shepard's first choice) - The subplot with having her replaced by her identical-looking daughter (if only they made it more meaningful)
Only downsides of her is her 'combat' uniform with the heels, pretty weird to sexualize an alien warrior and maybe her possible suicide in ME3, which imo, didn't seem that logical

Thane Krios, but that's mainly because I love reptiles. I have always had pet lizards. I grew up in Florida surrounded by them, so it's just this weird aesthetic appreciation for drell in general that I have. Well, that and I also appreciate Chris L'Etoile's take on a fully evolved reptilian brain.

If I had to choose just one character. Wrex. But its impossible because so many squadmates in the series are god like.
In ME1: my go to team is Wrex and Kaidan. Doesn't matter what class I play, but I wreck face with these two and can handle anything. I'll throw in Tali if its a geth mission. Other than that, I don't use the others unless its for variety's sake.
In ME2: Miranda, Thane, Zaeed, and Kasumi are my favorites. '
In ME3 its Kaidan and Javik easily.

Mordin and Thane. They both got very few votes, so I voted Mordin b/c he is the kind of character I would not mind seeing in each and every game, and never tire of it, while Thane is an "it depends" character archetype, who might get irritating if I don't fall for the game-specific variant.

My top 3: 1. Garrus - obvious and boring choice, but you just can't beat him. He's your best buddy (and/or) love interest through the whole damn thing, he never lets you down and he's got some amazing moments. Their final farewell really breaks my heart. "Just like the good old days... I guess this is the last time we get to say it." And I really love his voice and his romance with Tali. 2. Mordin - he's an absolute hero. I love his genophage storyline, it just shows how committed he is to doing the right thing. And he sings and sends you that amazing datapad. I really hope he gets to realize his retirement dream. "Maybe experiment with seashells" 3. Samara - I like her for similar reasons as I liked Aveline in DA2. A strong woman in her own right who respects the protagonist but is not intimidated by the latter. Samara never skips an opportunity to chastise the Renegade Shepard, and I love it how she always stands up for her own beliefs. The scene in Citadel DLC where Samara visits Shepard's apartment is one of the most touching ones in the trilogy. To be honest, I like everyone. Even James and Jacob, who some people love to hate

As a character in and of himself, Garrus is not actually my favorite character. Mordin is the one that lands squarely in that spot. However, I do not like to have Mordin as a fellow combatant. There's something about that setup that doesn't sit right with me, regardless of his STG background. I benched him the entirety of ME2, because it seemed like he'd be a valuable asset best left to the lab. Garrus, on the other hand, is the solid all-rounder. He's my stalwart sniper buddy that will get in the thick of it and crack wise the entire time. In ME2 and 3, he was usually the one I took on most missions, and the one I always chose to lead the other team.

As characters:
Ashley is my all time favourite, right from first meeting her on Eden Prime. I love her attitude and the fact she doesn't always agree with Shepard. She and Shep can have a lot in common in many ways and I think it's an interesting dynamic.
Second favourite would be Wrex - he's such an interesting character right from the start and I love his character arc across the series. Krogan in general are great, but he's the best one. Funny too.
Almost everyone's great really though. Tali, Garrus, Legion, Thane, Samara...
From a gameplay point of view:
Wrex is almost too good - pretty much all the advantages of a soldier but with added biotics.
Garrus is great in all three games and Miranda is useful in any situation.

In the field:
ME1: Tali/Liara ME2: Miranda/Jack, Kasumi/Tali, Zaeed/Samara ME3: Liara/Garrus, Liara/Tali
I run soldier mostly, though in ME3 I respecced Korynn with Lash added, and running Liara with her is delicious. I like Tali and Kasumi for tech abilities and banter. Miranda and Jack for banter with each other. Garrus/Zaeed/Samara for long range firepower if I need it.
Just as a character:
Liara. I love watching her evolution from nerdy scientist to nerdy scientist Shadow Broker to potential diplomat.
Tali. She gets some of the best lines. She is so cute and fiercely loyal. She is Korynn's space bestie.
Kasumi. Loved talking to her on the Normandy. I wish she was with me in ME3 just so I can sit in the lounge and pick her brain.
Jack. Another fun one to just talk to. Love her honesty.

Even Miranda isn't in heels, but it's Samara's bizarre cleavage that works less for me than the heels do (the heels are at least chunky?) - it's more distracting anyway, and not titillating... maybe it offsets her frankly *striking* features? I dunno. Anyway. AFA her Maybe Suicide in 3, though; I actually found that logical from her perspective. She didn't want to kill her last remaining daughter and wasn't prepared to do so, but the Code she swore herself so thoroughly to would not allow her to let her daughter go free. The only 'out' she could see (and she is *not* a lateral thinker) was to take herself off the board. I never hit the paragon interrupt so fast. To keep this on-topic; Samara's in my top 5. Tali, Kaidan, Miranda, Mordin and Samara. (I started the OT with 2 first, and have only recently been filling out the gaps)

Have to go with Kaidan Alenko, then Wrex then Tali got to love them so much!!! Most definitely the best squadmates from the original game for sure. As much as I like Ashley, I find Wrex does everything she does but better and he's tankier and has biotics. Kaidan is definitely best bro, and Tali in general is great. I rarely feel the need to use Garrus, Liara, or Ashley outside of variety's sake. A shame Wrex is only a squadmate in the Citadel DLC in ME3 though.
