Even so, I think it's fair to say that the general reaction to the endings was negative everywhere. The BSN may have went nuclear with ending hate, but it wasn't an anomaly. There was no place where the game was being discussed that endings weren't getting a ton of criticism. By "everywhere" I assume you mean the internet? Because NONE of the people I know in real life hated the ending. One coworker even thought it was awesome. One was ok with it. Others a bit disappointed, but nobody was actually upset and certainly nobody still cares. The same people also enjoyed DAI and are very much looking forward to MEA. I, myself, was confused, then disappointed by the ending. More by the lazy color scheme execution than the implications. The ending shitstorm made me leave BSN for 2 years. It was ridiculous. So sure, the internet makes you think everybody hates something. The thing is, the internet has become a place to bitch about everything. So it's not necessarily representative of the general response by everyone who played the game. The ending was not well done. If that really bothered the majority of players? No idea. We don't know. Those who carry a grudge and now distrust Bioware are probably a tiny tiny minority, and apparently they are all here on BSN. *g* And I'll bet ME3's ending was the most watched ending ever. Period.  |

Well, I suppose given how some people feel about BioWare on here, and all future BioWare games, it makes you wonder they are even going to the effort of trying to please so many people. Nothing they'll do is safe from the extreme levels of scrutiny some people will put any iota of what BioWare do under. But, those who are overly negative aren't the majority (I'd argue) at least not when you take every single person who is thinking about getting the game and is a fan of Mass Effect. I wouldn't take what a lot of people say on here, or YouTube comments, as a sum of what the entire fanbase thinks. Things have been getting pretty heated here lately after the whole Tempest reveal, but this site is for people to express their views, even if they are negative. There are plenty of people like myself who are happy to counter their negativity with some naive optimism and positivity  |

If BioWare marketing was aiming for a similar strategy to how FO4 was released then they failed. They provided way more information way earlier than FO4. What seems to be happening now is some sort of hedging between that style, and the style we're more familiar with from past games. I don't think it's working for anyone. Trying to do both and failing to do either.
It also doesn't really make sense for BioWare because they've cultivated an entirely different relationship with their fanbase. The approach-ability of the developers on twitter and in forums is a big appeal to a lot of people. Being able to talk about their games with the devs builds a lot of loyalty. Loyalty that could lead to people continuing to buy into a product even if they may disagree with design decisions. Making the devs stay silent for so long on so much risks alienating that group of people. If I remember anything from my Marketing 101 class in college it's that retaining the customers you have is way more cost effective than acquiring new ones.
I'm not really sure what is gained by Bethesda's strategy anyway. Maybe less distraction for developers because they don't have to deal with fan's reactions to their decisions? Controversy itself isn't inherently damaging to sales, it could even boost it, depending on what it's about.
I hope shinobi is right about this trailer, but I'm not convinced we're going to get anything substantial until the game has "gone gold".

The company is not doing a favor to anyone by deigning to manufacture their goods or actually making an effort. Bioware can stop making games tomorrow and virtually nothing will change, someone else will make video games. And when you manage to piss off your crowd you can certainly expect an adverse reaction. Guilt by association? I have never threatened developers, and most sane people still don't. If EA got the "worst company" title, that's nothing to celebrate, aside from perhaps a sense of vindication. The question that really matters is if they deserved it, and if they did - are they better today? I don't "bitch about" anything. My opinion on the ME3 ending is that it was shit, and a low point for BW. That said, I don't wake up every morning with the intention to preach this opinion to others. If someone raises the issue I may state my opinion and my reasoning but that's about it. It's just another opinion and how much time has passed isn't really relevant. I don't really like BW as a company, and I find the concept of brand loyalty to be utterly retarded, those companies produce goods because they want my money, that's where our relationship end. As for BW games, I tend to judge them on their own merits. I would rate DA:I as disappointingly average. And as for ME:A, well, I have some concerns, and I pre-ordered it because I managed to jump on the 30% off sale, but all in all I am in a wait and see mode. TIL: You, specifically, equate to all fans. The ego on you, man. Sounds like someone needs a diaper change and a ba ba before naptime. |
