Combat's actually the most entertaining in the Mass Effect series (it's dragon age combat that kinda bores me a little). ME1 had sledgehammer rounds. Hours of hyena cackling ensued whenever there's waiting at entrances for enemies to come by. ME2 can be a bit of a grind if you're insistent on playing on hardcore or higher (for that geth pulse rifle, the completionist in me says NEVER!) ME3 is where fun can be had with experimentation and everything is up for grabs. Where it drags will depend on which game. ME1, for me, is pointless in gathering minerals since it doesn't import, ME2-oh god, now I remember the planet scanning, the horrible, tedious scanning. ME3 drags when it comes to cutscenes. And boy, do they love their cutscenes. I usually leave to go make a sandwich during the beginning and skip where they'll let me (which was rare).

I've actually got my first, very leisurely, play through of of the trilogy going on pc with texture mods and such since making the change from Xbox. I quickly learned that there isn't a difference to how clunky the combat in ME1 feels between platforms. Easy mode for me until I get to ME2.
I don't remember it being great for its time when I got it on the 360 at launch, but didn't feel that bad. It really hasn't aged well in terms of gameplay. Still love the hell out of the setting, characters and story, though.

Whenever I try to replay the trilogy I usually play the first game with no problem and it's only halfway through ME2 that I become bored... I have only finished ME3 two or three times, I think.
Don't know why but somehow I kind of like ME1 the best. Maybe it's the companions or Saren or the focus being more on humanity's place in the galaxy and Shepard becoming the first human Spectre, than in the later games where it's all about stopping the collectors or reapers.

The horrid framerate drops is my main issue with ME. If it wasn't for that I would enjoy it more. It certainly held a charm though, but that is because of the story. The game's saving grace.

I actually love the first Mass Effect. I'm not a fan of the combat for all of the classes (Vanguard/engineer) but the rest are pretty okay and get better in the next 2 games. The exploration is great even if it is empty planets and the same few buildings, for some reason, it never gets old to me. I like Mass Effect 2 as well. It doesn't get hard for me to play the trilogy until about half way through Mass Effect 3.

You cannot fully appreciate the ME universe unless you play through all of the games and that includes Infiltrator and Galaxy. Personnaly, I find ME1 endearing despite its flaws and I managed to finish it with all classes (on PC).

Engineer in ME1 is interesting mostly in that it is the weakest class / only one without an real defensive power. If you don't take a defensive bonus power, than it ends up being a fair amount different than most of the other classes.

Worst part of the trilogy IMO. I find combat dull and planet exploring even more boring-- just a big freaking tetragon with nothing to interact with. DAI's exploring kinda reminds it so I hate Inquisition, too.
Basically 90% of my time in ME1 were boring bunker side quests on the planets, annoying Mako-ing on the said planets, and turning a gazilion of stuff into omnigel.

I forgot, I think the worst part of ME1 for me is the Luna mission with the Rogue AI I played insanity, and it was just such a chore. I had to keep on talking to myself about which building I had already gone in and finished and kept on driving around seemingly endlessly finding the building that I missed in that triangle. Also I have a penchant for being a completionist and I go to every single side planet and gather everything you can ...which..is kinda ridiculous lol.

I forgot, I think the worst part of ME1 for me is the Luna mission with the Rogue AI My favorite part is getting out of the Mako and looking at Earth. The best looking planet in the universe. The missions itself isn't too bad That happened to me once. I've done that a few times. Most of my playthroughs I just do the main missions

Two things with that one: I always just take Tali and Garrus for max tech attacks. The second is that I basically always just do the bunkers in a clockwise fashion, so that makes it easy to figure out where to go next. Alternatively you can just leave the Mako by the first bunker you go in, and when you get out of the second just go to the one that doesn't have the Mako sitting there.

Good idea- it's a preferable tactic compared to putting post it notes on my plasma tv LOL @mike I haven't even thought about that but you are right, MEA isn't going to have any Sol system so that's kinda sad. Other planets are super cool but there's nothing like our mother system.

I don;t get too caught up in all that. It is clunky, but I play along; and as long the bad guys go down we could be slinging pickled eggs at them for all I care. I know what I'm getting into when I play it, so I just take it for what it is.
I also love the atmosphere of the game. The lighting. The soft music that plays in the background on the Citadel.
And I find that I get readjusted to the clunky combat fairly quickly.

Want to mention about the ME2 planet scanning: for me that wasn't tedious because I loved the surprise drop down planetside missions. You're scanning along not thinking too much about it all, then all of sudden bam! you gotta go down and kick some booty.
I loved that surprise. ME1 had something a bit similar with the N7 missions. You stepped up to the galaxy map then Hackett bust in with an emergency situation.

I wait until I get that Mass Effect itch, and then go for full immersion. Since I am a completionist, I usually need a 3 day weekend to dig into just ME1.

It's odd but I always find that the things people don't like about Mass Effect are some of those I like the most.
The Citadel is a wonderful place for me. A massive hub filled with people willing to spout their life stories at the drop of a hat to a complete stranger, quests, and companion dialogue. Hell I even like the elevators far more than the loading screens used in the next two games.
Unexplored worlds, and I do agree some of them could do with a bit more vegetation on them, are hauntingly beautiful at times. The collection quests are pretty much optional unless you are desperate for a few extra minerals in ME2 or an extra war asset in ME3, both of which can be easily added with the save editor on the 360 and PC versions of the games.
The combat in the first game is the best of the series for me. There are always options available during a fight, I don't feel tied to chest high walls when I play as an Adept because I have shields that are actually effective. You have enemies that can actually miss unlike the pinpoint accuracy they had in later games with everything but heavy weapons. Most importantly Shepard has never clung limpet like to a wall in the middle of a firefight. Oh and ammo mods that any class can use instead of them stupidly becoming powers in the next two games, my Adept Shepard can use Cryo Ammo all the way through Mass Effect 1 but can't use it in ME2 and ME3?

ME1 is my favorite ME title because it's an actual fuckin' RPG and not a shooter with RPG elements.
ME1 was the stepping stone to what BioWARE is today. They were coming off of Origins and decided "Hey, why don't we try a game that's a tad bit more action and a tad bit less RPG" and then when ME1 did well they decided "oh hell yeah apparently RPGs suck lets make EVERYTHING more actiony."
Now we're here, and BioWARE sucks a massive cock.

I know what I'm getting into when I play it, so I just take it for what it is. I also love the atmosphere of the game. The lighting. The soft music that plays in the background on the Citadel. And I find that I get readjusted to the clunky combat fairly quickly. I'm the same. In the past, after a long time away from it, or too many runs through ME3, I may have thought about the impending shock of clunky gameplay mechanics. Once I start playing, though, I get sucked back into the story. I love the game so much, that the clunky mechanics are quickly forgotten. Soon, I'm eagerly looking forward to the next upgrade points I can sink into skills I shouldn't have to buy. I'm soon looking forward to obtaining those few pieces of equipment I'll use, out of the thousands I'll collect. And so on... There's a lot to hate, but the game's just so damn good, I overlook the tripe and soak in the setting and characters. I'm a completionist, so I wipe the galaxy clean of quests and discoveries. I anticipate that moment when I can land on Virmire and begin my final run toward the end-game. (I always save Virmire until everything else is completed.) Best of all, after that epic ending that begins (for me) on Virmire and ends with Sovereign's destruction in the Battle of the Citadel, I get to start the process anew in ME2. Now I want to play Mass Effect, again. So many great feels. Looking up at Klendagon from Presrop, or at Earth from Luna; baking under Maji's twin suns... Yep. I need to play.

I agree that it does sag in the middle somewhat and the gameplay is clunky compared with ME2 and 3 but the ending from Virmire on is glorious, especially once you get to Ilos.
