Now call it whining, call it trolling, call it what you want but I need to get something out of my system. So far I've actually been excited about the new Mass Effect game. They made a lot of right decisions with it so far in my eyes. Making a story about exploring and colonizing new worlds? Wonderful, that's what I wanted from ME in the first place. Bringing the Mako back? Awesome, loved it. Getting rid of a morality system? Perfect, I had a lot of problems with Bioware's idea of right and wrong. Now with just one decision Bioware crushed all my excitement. S.A.M. the AI. "From his node in the Ark, SAM receives a direct feed of the Pathfinder's sensory input via a neural implant. It sees and feels as Ryder does...". Excuse me, what ?!? You know, I was fine with a ship AI like EDI, but for goodness sake, it should be my decision whether I allow a goddamn AI into my characters body. I wholeheartedly rejected synthesis in the ending of ME3. Now an AI is supposed to be an inseparable part of my character, changing and influencing him/her all while my character has absolutely no control over it and can't shut it off. This is synthesis creeping in through the back door. Remember how one of the ME3 writers said they actually believe what the Star Kid says about synthesis being inevitable? Well, there you have it. Also, remember Javik's story about the Zha and the Zha'til? Remember what happened to Saren and the Illusive man? All I thought was, those idiots can only blame themselves for allowing technology they don't control and they don't understand into their bodies. Now I am supposed to play the same kind of idiot. It's obvious Bioware will once again advertise the game by saying how this is our story and Ryder our character. No character I would call mine, in fact no character I would respect, would allow an AI into his/her body. And it's obvious they will use S.A.M to push their robofetishist message some more just like they did with EDI and the Geth. So it won't be my story either cuz if it's not my message, it's not my story. So there it is, got it out of my system (actually feel a little better now). Two last things. One, to all you Sci-Fi writers who keep pushing your roboesoteric and transhumanism agenda. You are more annoying than Jehova's whitnesses with your Pinocchio messiah. Two, I actually was excited about MEA, I really was. And I really loved the ME universe minus the preachy Pinocchio stuff. But if the last thing I ever did in this universe was shooting that damn tube, flipping the bird to Star Kid and its synthesis and sending every Pinocchio in the Milky Way to robot hell, I'm perfectly fine with that.
And now I'm off to find out if Star Citizen will have Pinocchio stuff in it. And if yes, I swear, I'm going to buy No Man's Sky. F**k's sake, there has to be one damn game about space exploration without Pinocchio stuff in it.

That's a new one.
Obviously Bioware is trying to pander the AI growing audience, leaving their full organic human base audience on the side. The whole project is called AI how could I did not see that coming.
Cannot possibly be because ME is a SF franchise.

There's no suggestion Sam can change or forcibly impinge on Ryder's mental or physical choices as far as I'm aware. Seems more an extension of wearable tech that makes use of human sensory inputs.
We also don't know if there will be a privacy mode for non mission time.
I don't see it as in any way akin to synthesis where organic and inorganic were blended together in some bizarre singular fusion.

Righteous indignation and trolling aside, this whole transhumanist vibe I am getting from SAM and the implants does seem like a rather obvious parallel to that particular ending via some form of proto-synthesis.
I have no problem with this choice (on paper), just so long as BioWare doesn't try to force the idea down my throat that all of this is inevitable and/or that AI can only become "alive" by becoming more like us. I thought the Geth and EDI were valid forms of life long before ME 3 came along and turned them into Pinocchio-bots.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think an A.I is the same as a robot. So they're not "pushing it's roboesoteric agenda". Other than that, it is your money spend them where ever you want. Just don't buy the game and then complain now that you have created this thread. That would be embarrassing.

I'm disappointed guys, I've expected better gifs. At least give me confused Gollum. There's no suggestion Sam can change or forcibly impinge on Ryder's mental or physical choices as far as I'm aware. I don't see it as in any way akin to synthesis where organic and inorganic were blended together in some bizarre singular fusion. It's an AI in the ME universe. What do we know about that so far, especially AI's implanted in organics in any form? Zha'til, Overlord, you name it. What "Organic and inorganic blended together" would be, is open for interpretation, and honestly for me it's enough to know it collects data about me to say I wouldn't want that thing in my body.

StarCitizen doesn't have robots or AI, as far as I know. They're planning on letting your character download a program to, for example, shoot your turrets for you but it's hardly sophisticated. It's still nowhere near being released though.
As for ME:A, I'll admit the implant bit had me making faces pretty quickly. I'm pretty sure the SAM implant allows you to do the party trick of changing your profile though. Pumping you with adrenaline and stims for Soldier, reconfiguring your biotic amp for Adept, etc.
The symbols for the classes were pretty prevalent in the SAM section, too much so for it to be a coincidence I think.

There's nothing wrong with including an AI, in fact it brings with it all sorts of storytelling opportunities. The real question is whether Bioware writers can capitalize on those opportunities in fresh and interesting ways. AI and machine-human integration are not that far off from reality...and bring with it all sorts of philosophical and ethical questions along with the prospective advantages. I'd love for Bio to delve in and explore these questions and the potential ramifications. In all likelihood they just show all the advantages and ignore the unintended consequences.
Question: If I hack and control SAM, how badly can I f*ck with Ryder and the team?

SAM does seem really creepy and I hope Bioware's writing will address that rather than just assuming everyone is cool with it.
I mean, they should be more freaked out than we are since anti-AI sentiment is apparently rather common, and was even before the Geth and Sovereign trashed the Citadel.

Whether I would allow a self thinking and self acting program influence my body and/or mind is a question and my answer would be no. Well, not Bioware's answer apparently. I do admit though, that at this point I don't know everything about all this S.A.M stuff to make a final judgment.

Something to consider: EDI was created using the rogue AI from Luna and Reaper tech, as well as Cerberus' vast ressources and cutting-edge technology. Are we supposed to believe that Alec Ryder just built an arguably superior AI by himself without any Reaper technology?
