OMfuckingG. Thank you. Fucking thank you. I get so much shit for being a vegetarian. And then all the laughter and the "lol I love bacon too much to give it up hahaha" ... me: :poker: You realize that... doesn't make you look very good... from my point of view... "I love to eat the innocent flesh of dead animals because it tastes soooo good rofl" *backs away slowly* Though I've simply come to the conclusion that humans are born with different levels of empathy, and meat-eaters are just a little short on it, that's all. People are like, actively aggressive when I tell them I'm a vegetarian. I've gotten shit for being gay ONCE (in real life, anyway. Online is a different story but it just goes to show what huge pussies these people are). Vegetarian? All the time. Even when the other person brought it up and then they seem to have to basically drill me on why I would do such a thing until it devolves into them challenging me to explain how a cow is different from a broccoli (no, really). No one's been necessarily rude to me, but people give me weird looks and roll their eyes or make it seem like I'M making a big deal out of it when I'm not (such as during mandatory work lunches, I will ask if there's a vegetarian option, and people will just roll their eyes and be like, there'll be a side salad and some bread, and I don't even react rudely, I'm just like, okay). What annoys me most are my friends and family, though I've been veggie for almost 20 years now so they are used to it. But I used to get lots of meat-related jokes which I genuinely found hurtful. (Sorry for OT, thread!)

Gaylien. Yessssss! The clash of cultures shouldn't be only available for straight characters One thing I want to ask, since we're talking about LGBT characters and their level of quality, what kind of LGBT characters do you want to see? For one, I would love it if, in the future, at least one of the non-asari characters in all the marketing were gay/bi. Like you know what I'm talking about: the starter, main squadmate/companion who has a lot of content and connections to the main plot. Like, Cassandra from DA:I, for example. Do you have to ask? GAY KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOUR. WITH A RUGBY PLAYER BUILD. AND SWEET, DOPEY HAZEL PUPPY EYES. Ha... I don't need anything so specific but KISA, male or female, would be great

(spoiler: I didn't lose my job and it turns out I was right and they got in trouble).

Geez, yes, I was appalled for Dorianmancers when I realized this happened in Trespasser. I mean at least they can Skype? Ha ha... sorry, not the same :| But it seems DA writers enjoy tragic romances, regardless of orientation. Just seemed unfair in Trespasser since some were horrifically tragic while others were married with a dog *cough*

One thing I'd like to see is an actual butch f/f option or at least one that's a lot less feminine looking, especially one on the older side. Straight male players keep complaining that they don't want options like that for their male character, while bi/gay women have been asking for something like that for years. Why not finally give the lesbian fanbase what we've wanted for the longest time? And, no, it's not about stereotypes, or else they wouldn't have characters like Zevran, Bull, Isabela, etc.
However, my enjoyment of such a character would be kind of nullified if they tried to give her a cutesy, quirky personality. I want a f/f option that isn't written to appeal to men at all. She doesn't have to be anything like Cassandra or Aveline, but the reasons those characters appealed to women wasn't just because of them being female warriors who were a little more masculine. It was that they acted and were treated like adults, with focuses on their struggles as people working in a flawed system.

It felt like the game constantly punished me for liking Dorian early on before we even knew his name. (glitches, bad endings, etc etc)

I think the romances in DA:I fit the characters they were with quite well and i loved it. Even if some of them were very tragic.

I've still been watching the thread, just battling the flu (thanks random person from my husband's job) and I don't have a lot to add. However, I wanted to thank all of you guys. Romance threads can be the hardest to maintain civility in, at least based upon my personal experience. You guys made me a little nervous, but you got past the potential for bickering. Keep up the good conversation! If this is going to be the big Romance thread, then this attitude is welcome. PS: If you have a fever, DON'T GO INTO WORK. Your co-workers and their families would appreciate it.

Meanwhile I just romanced Piper (best waifu, fite me irl) and no one else because she's the only one the game ever shows as not being totally on board with the polyamory thing afaik I only romanced Piper too, but I've only completed one playthrough of that game. Hey blue. Can't stay away, huh?
Same. Got to say, I really liked "Blue" as an endearing nickname (romance or not). It felt natural. Also, this seems like a decent excuse time to post this: It just fit too perfectly.

*casually liking all great comments in this thread*
Seriously thank you all for great comments on the last few pages. I have difficulties in expressing myself when it comes to lgbt issues. Maybe because they are very personal to me or English is my 2nd language. Reading insightful comments from you guys helps me form my opinions and express them.

Oh man, I'm a (mostly) straight woman and I have a gigantic crush on Aveline. Her voice does funny things to me and I would've romanced the hell out of her if I could. I like hooking her up with Donnic because they're cute as heck but I'll always be kind of salty that she wasn't a romance option. Siiiiiiiiigh. Cassandra is also fine as hell, and it's a travesty that she wasn't an option for female Inquisitors. Ugh.

It was that they acted and were treated like adults, with focuses on their struggles as people working in a flawed system. I kinda feel that this might very well be the crux of the issue concerning LGBT content - romances or otherwise - and why we end up with things like the Inquisitor being invasive and rude to Krem to learn a lesson or that Steve's writer made it one of his goals to make sure straight male gamers/shepards didn't "accidentally" stumble onto his romance. I think the best way to write this kind of stuff is to write it for the intended audience and preferably by LGBT writers. They know the experiences and I feel that, by putting into their writing what they want to see, without worrying about educating or outsider opinions, they can create more genuine, meaningful writing. I mean, Bioware says they're worried about the "butch lesbian"stereotype, and I can appreciate that, but from what I've seen wlw have been asking for tougher women to romance. I feel that a writer who was also a wlw would have little trouble with that, since that's also her experience. At the very least - the very, very least - do what Weekes did. Research and listen. As for what I'd like to see in LGBT characters, I'd just like a gay/bi man who's unabashedly amorous with/about other men. I'd absolutely love to see some big displays of public affection between my PC and his LI But I can see Bioware avoiding this; On top of not wanting to scare away straight male gamers, similarly about the whole butch lesbian thing, they'll also try to avoid the "predatory gay" stereotype and I'm all for avoiding that (the latter, I couldn't give less of a toss about about the former). But it'd be nice if men could talk more about loving men. I think Steve was actually a step in the right direction in this regard. Also pretty much everything I said above; more LGBT writers please! And honestly, the best way to avoid LGBT stereotypes - on top of treating them as people first - is to just have a lot of them. Have multiple bi characters with varying levels of promiscuity, tons of lesbians along the butch/femme spectrum, that sort of thing. That way we're not using one character to represent a whole group. Oh and defs more Gayliens! (golly I'm demanding )

I'm wary, but I'm not going to write Gil off just yet. I can only hope it's not a situation where the priority in writing him is the gay male audience, not the straight male audience's comfort with said gay character.
