Someone confident, flirty, maybe a little grizzled, knows what they want. No awkward goofy shyness for me, thanks. I 100% get the appeal but it's never done it for me personally.
Honestly, any character who actually pursues the female PC and expresses interest without you having to basically hit them over the head with terribly obvious flirts akin to 'WE SHOULD BANG' in flashing red lights. It'd be fun to play the Josephine to the LI's Inquisitor, so to speak. I know Bioware doesn't want to offend players and doesn't want to bring back ninjamances but sometimes it feels like you're harassing the LI's into a relationship, not exactly fun to play through. Heck, I'll even romance a batarian if the guy can manage to woo the socks off my Ryder.

I'm pretty open to all kinds of romances, but it has to be a basically "good" person. Someone who wants to make the world a better place in some way or another. Maybe a bit boring, but eh, it's the only kind of person I can connect with. A big plus would be someone that surprises me. In my first playthrough of DA:I, I quickly became quite smitten with Blackwall and really enjoyed most of that romance. In several scenes, I never quite knew what to expect and sometimes he'd react in ways that took me by surprise, but still with the feeling that there was a reason behind it. I loved that right up until the resolution of the Revelations quest, but that's for another topic.

I would like a self confident, intelligent person who likes me for for who I am and challenges me, but knows when to back off. I do not need a protector. I can protect myself.

Miranda Clone, with new Lara Croft British accent, blonde hair. And more catsuit armor because, well, why not.
Or a James Vega kinda character that we can actually get a good romance on.

You know, it'd be interesting to romance someone who isn't a super good guy. Someone who perhaps starts that way then messes up later in the game (either through circumstance or evilness), leaving you to decide how to handle it.
Like Anders after act 3, or Loghain, or Solas after the reveal. Give us some angst and drama to work through, and not just 'here's a terrible thing walks off into the sunset without you.

Hmm I'd like a classy blonde girl. Not snobby like, but well mannered and reserved type I guess. Josephine-ish I suppose but with less punctuality and naivety.

My ideal LI in ME:A: Since there's fat chance of that, though, I haven't thought about it at all. I probably won't even play the single player mode.

Silk hiding knives (niceness hiding knives?) seems to be my favourite. The characters that come across as 'cute', 'innocent', but are 100% capable of gutting you - and will. In Bioware games these characters often go through a crisis of character. Bonus points if their niceness isn't treated as weakness.
E.g, Leliana (Origins), Josephine.. Liara in later games, though she lacks the gentle rounding of niceness at times - not that I'm complaining. I can't think of any male characters that fit this, though.

I just go with whatever character strikes my fancy, don't have much of a preference -- though I most often go for the guy that can make me laugh (intentionally or not.) I don't care if they're human or alien either.

My ideal LI would probably be a woman who's a mashup of mostly Ashley and Bastila, with a bit of Morrigan/Miranda. Someone who's strong willed, not afraid to speak their mind as it is, and who's willing to take charge now and then. As with Ashley, she's a good hearted person with a spiritual side, which is interesting as well.
Weirdly enough, Cassandra didn't fit the bill for me, despite her seemingly compatible personality. I feel bad explaining it like this, but something about her appearance just didn't click with me.
I personally don't feel any romantic attachment to characters who have a soft and innocent character, like how Leliana and Liara were at the beginning of DAO and ME1. Not that they are bad characters by any means, they have great stories and make good friends. It's just my preference.

In ME2 she's run down and depressed. In ME3 she's whiny and fragile. None of these stages of her development are attractive to me, and I would even go so far as to say I would be afraid of damaging her.

Because this game is a clean slate I have no expectations regarding LIs. I know very little about MEA, except where it's going to take place and what possible races will be joining our human PC on the journey. So, maybe an adorable Salarian dude, they have the cutest personalities. Or perhaps a cool Krogan lady! Garrus and Thane were my favorites from the original trilogy so another drell or turian would be good too, maybe female this time. I'm most interested in personality rather than looks. I think they have a different group of writers there in Montreal, so I look forward to seeing what they do with the characters.

Sciency, professerish types. A bit of social awkwardness without any of the creepy behavior that sometimes goes along with that is nice as well. Also, like the opposite and enjoy charismatic brainy men.
That be mah catnip.

Human, female, preferably Japanese. Alien ones seem akin to sex with animals. Not that I'm advocating removing them, but my suspension of disbelief tends to break. Mostly I want them to be interesting or fun. My favorites among Bioware characters are Morrigan, Leliana, Isabel, Sera, and Tali (only because I picture a human...and damn that body.) I find them all appealing for various reasons, but in the real world wouldn't date any of them...well, maybe Morrigan though I don't see that lasting more than a month.

disclaimer: what I'd be fine with in the real world and what I find interesting in fiction are miles apart. With that out of the way. A ruthless badass who still is loyal to the mission and follows authority without question but stuffers from violent psychotic breaks. (ok yes I'm having a little obsession with the 2015 man from uncle at the moment... shot me )

If I ever get around to playing a character that romances women, she'll be my first choice. Cassandra was that character I hoped to see in a Bioware game since I started with Baldur's Gate back in 1998. I was really happy when they did it in DA:I, she was amazing. Bioware has a history of reusing many character types in their games, I hope this is true with Cassandra.
