I'll have to upgrade before I can play on PC, my CPU is just barely below minimum spec. Not a huge deal since I was planning on building a new system soon anyway.

So I guess you are just planning a mere processor upgrade, nothing else? I guess you could easily upgrade to a FX-8370E, which is also TDP 95w just like the FX-4300, but that exceeds $150. If you want to spend less, I guess you could go for the FX-8320E or FX-8300. These FX AM3+ builds have different TDPs, I am aiming at 95w given your current processor but you should check if your motherboard can handle a higher TDP, like 125w. In that case you would have many options.

Man, the new 1080Ti looks great so far and it's just the founder's edtion they tested so far. I'm tempted to sell my 1080 and get a 1080Ti but I don't think it's necessary for ME:A and I'll probably stick to the system I have right now, especially considering I'm going to buy something else expensive next week. Looking forward to the following generations of GPUs though - I will probably upgrade when I buy a large 4k TV for gaming some time in the future, might still be a while though.

I've been contemplating what the most cheapskate option would be in order to play it, in other words the cheapest gpu that could run it. If I could get something for less than $100 then it becomes a viable option. I don't want to do a proper upgrade for the time being.

Apparently the GPU is not that important in ME:A compared to some other games but the game makes good use of multiple cores. That's what I've read on a tech site when the minimum and recommended specs were revealed. So upgrading the GPU and then having the CPU as bottleneck is not really something you want. That being said the GPU is obviously still an important factor. Speaking of minimum and recommended specs: these are for gameplay @ 720p 30fps (minimum) and 1080p 30fps (recommended). Meaning: if you play higher resolutions you need more and if you want more than 30fps (and you do want that) you need more power...
