That would deprive the Hyperion of that crew member though. It makes much more sense to have somebody else in that role who will remain in that role. Alec is the Pathfinder, pretty much tied in command with the Hyperion's captain. He only seems onduty because he is planning to launch a mission to the surface, which is his role. If most of the pathfinder team is on the Hyperion, including SAM and Dr. Lexi, then I don't understand why Suvi or Gil wouldn't be. It's possible they could be on the Tempest already, but, since this is when most of the humans are waking up anyways, it seems bizarre that Suvi or Gil specifically were woken up way earlier. Kallo, you could at least justify with him being on a different ark. SAM is built into the Hyperion, as a way to keep the Pathfinder team always connected to the rest of the people. Dr. Lexi is only operating in the medbay of Hyperion because she is helping wake up and get ready the Pathfinder team since she knows them medically better than anyone. I'm not saying that Gil and Suvi aren't on Hyperion since they are, but it makes no sense for them to serve as bridge staff for the Hyperion when they are meant to serve on the Tempest. That'd be like if Joker was our shuttle pilot in ME3 instead of Steve. Why deprive a ship of personnel when you can just have another person be the personnel for the other ship? Same with Kallo, he is on the Hyperion but not part of the bridge crew. We'll see those three after we board the Tempest.

You have to admit, it does sound like Katy tho. We'll know, if they answer our tweets. They have a similar accent sure but I can't say definitively that it sounds like her. Not to mention the major character VAs tend to voice minor characters as well so this could be a case of that.

It's almost certainly Suvi, as it sounds JUST like Katy and the VO is for a character with a similar role. As for whether or not the redhead is Katy, well I'd say less likely but still probably, this is the opening of the game so it makes a lot of sense to introduce the major non-squadmate characters. Think of how the first 30 minutes of Mass Effect introduce you to so many characters, this seems much the same. I'd also put money on the person speaking just before Alec is Gil.

They do so with major characters very hesitantly. Outside of Mark Meer as the Vorcha and M.Shep and John Curry as Zevran and american male inquisitor, I can't think of any times within the same franchise much less the same game. And in both cases the VO's were VERY different, much more than this and Suvi probably will be.

BansheeOwnage , just curious... who would have been your ideal first choice for ME:A? I'm forever salty over Cora, would looooove if Bioware surprised me here but they won't. I really think this will be the first time I'll go for a NPC romance in my first run. Not really happy about this, much prefer having a squadmate LI. I didn't have one, actually. None of them jumped out at me as "I hope I can romance her!", but that's mostly because we still don't know a whole heck of a lot about them. Never liked the sound of Peebee nor the fact that one of my options was taken up by an asari again. Vetra might impress me with her character if she's available, since I'd rather romance a human than a turian if I'm being honest. And how much I like Cora will determine if I'm annoyed she's not an option, since like you I very much doubt she is. Not in love with her hair, but it's a minor thing So for me it's always been "Maybe some NPC, but I'll try to expect nothing." Also like you, and pretty obviously from the discussions on the Romances Thread, I'd also prefer a squadmate. I'm warming up to Suvi from what little we know, but that might be a bad thing if it turns out she's not an option or I don't actually end up liking her enough I feel like I'm playing Where's Waldo. I know! I mean, it could be her, it could not. Can they just tell us, already? Damn it is like being a detective at this point finding The Holygrayl, also if someone can put a screenshot of that in here. I am mostly avoiding videos with huge spoilers. I just watched it, and I wouldn't say there are huge spoilers. It is the very beginning, after all. We barely learned anything we didn't already know, in fact. Overall it looks good! Mihura we think that's Suvi's voice @ 9:43 It's worth a lil spoil for that alone, no? Nice catch! It does sound like her. If so, her accent isn't as heavy as I was expecting. When I think of Scottish accents, it's always extreme The person talking sounds like a navigator, as well. Hanako is right that she could be voicing someone else for a line or two, but would be a large coincidence. I don't think that's Suvi. Why would Suvi be serving on the bridge of the Hyperion if she is to serve on the crew of the Tempest? The meta reason would be to introduce us to characters before officially introducing us to characters. As for in-universe reasons, there could be many, such as Suvi not being assigned to the Tempest yet. It's possible our original science officer dies and she replaces them, or perhaps she's only filling in for someone who would normally be on the Hyperion but isn't awake yet? Like "We're crippled and our navigator is still in cryo, get the Tempest's navigator here, stat!" since they haven't launched the Tempest yet anyway. They have a similar accent sure but I can't say definitively that it sounds like her. Not to mention the major character VAs tend to voice minor characters as well so this could be a case of that. I actually remember it happening fairly frequently, but often their voice is masked with an effect, or a different accent, etc. Jen Hale voiced someone on Feros and it was pretty obviously her, so I wouldn't be too surprised if Suvi shared a voice with some random NPC. *shrug* Hard to say with the devs refusing to talk about her.

Yeah I totally forgot about her, but Mass Effect was made pre-EA buy out, so it had a MUCH lower budget. Now they have a the luxury of fancy voice actors.

Liked her guildtripring Peebee, there were some layers in that. And no, I will not miss FemShep or Jen Hale voice acting, I play SWTOR and Trooper is basically FemShep lel

I do like Jennifer Hawle's voice slightly more, though that might change. They're both phenomenal voice actresses, from what I've seen (well, heard) of both of their careers. As for Male Ryder, I'm liking Taylorson's performance more than Meer's, though I blame the direction he was given since it's not like he's bad at voice acting. I don't know if I'll miss Hale as the protagonist. It'll be different, but I'll adjust.

Preferred Jen Hale over Mark Meer voicing too, could only manage two playthroughs with Mark whereas I had several with Jen. I'll miss her deep voice but I do like what I've heard from Fryda so far too. Real green recruit pep to it aha, fRyder is pretty young after all so it fits.

Speaking of Jen Hale, will you fem players here miss her? What'd you think of Fryda so far? I'll miss her. Her voice made Shepard for me, it really wouldn't have been the same without it. Like Garrus - could you imagine him with a different voice? I also liked Meer, particularly in ME3 where he was more emotional. Both Shepard's voices are distinctive. I feel like this is a great quality to have for the protagonist. Not just for its own sake apparently, since there was a lot of confusion about whether Sara or Peebee was talking in her mission. I guess I'm saying that Tom and Fryda sound a bit less unique (quite liked Tom's performance in the intro though, hoping to hear that much of Fryda soon). I admit part of it might be nostalgia-related, with Shepard being my first RPG protagonist and therefore pretty much my first female protagonist, but that's definitely not it. Her acting was great, and her voice itself was awesome, to me. I think it being a bit deeper worked great for an RPG protagonist who often needs to sound intimidating or commanding, etc. That's part of the reason I used Sumalee's voice in DA:I. And that's where Fryda comes in. Since first hearing her, I had my doubts. Not about her skill - I'd love to hear more of her work, but that part doesn't worry me. Just that I might not like her voice itself as much as some other protagonists (Shepard, Quizzy, Sole Survivor [was excited when I heard Jack was voicing her and wasn't disappointed]). That said, it does fit with her being green and not strictly a soldier. I also really liked Jo Wyatt's Hawke, despite sounding very different than the others I mentioned, because she was perfect at channeling my Purple!Hawke. If I can play Ryder sarcastically (which they said you can), I think Fryda might be just fine

I'll miss Hale but only because we're not playing as Shep. I won't miss her not being the new hero if that makes sense? Certain actors get stuck as certain roles for me. For example no matter what Daniel Radcliffe does, I always see him as Harry Potter and its the same with Alan Davies too...I regularly call him Jonathan Creek because I just associate him with that role. Hale will always be Shep to me. I like what i've heard of Ryder though so I am happy with the new hero.
(So basically.... I will miss Shepard but won't miss her voice since we've moved onto a new hero)

Yeah, if they're the only Tempest crew not to be featured in marketing, and the two gay crewmembers, that'll be a pretty bad look. Even if they are featured, it's still not a great look to have your gays be relegated to crewmember status in all of your games (none in ME1, none in ME2, Sam and Steve in ME3, Gil and Suvi in ME:A?).

Dragon Age has always been the more inclusive BioWare property, largely because of David Gaider's influence. Mass Effect is definitely doing more now than it used to in order to be more inclusive, but it's still behind Dragon Age. I'm actually curious since David Gaider has left BioWare, what kind of impact that could have on Dragon Age going forward. There's also the new BioWare IP, which releases next year. We still don't know anything about that game, other than BioWare will likely reveal it at E3 in three months.

We still don't know anything about that game, other than BioWare will likely reveal it at E3 in three months. Unfortunately this is true. They may share the company name and some employees, but they are different teams. I just wish each team would use critical feedback from both franchises, which includes being inclusive. Bioware claims to do that, but... we'll see. Yeah, if they're the only Tempest crew not to be featured in marketing, and the two gay crewmembers, that'll be a pretty bad look. Looking doubtful at this point, unfortunately Don't want to offend anyone, but what's the endgame of this progress? Who and how will determine that perfect inclusiveness is achieved? A strange question. What was the endgame of the Civil Rights Movement? Feminism? We won't get perfect inclusiveness simply on account of differing opinions, but the end goal is equality. In terms of the games, that means equality of choice, for one thing. Good representation, for another, and that's extremely important for promoting acceptance and equality in real life, because humanizing something, even through the use of fictional characters, creates empathy and encourages understanding. It's a lot easier to hate or fear someone you've never met and talked with.

So I just popped into the Gil thread... 47 pages? And Suvi has 13, even though I feel like we know more about her (not that it's much). I realize not everyone is here or in the Gil thread because they're the speculated gay characters, but a lot are at least partly there for that. You guys... are we an endangered species?

I realize not everyone is here or in the Gil thread because they're the speculated gay characters, but a lot are at least partly there for that. You guys... are we an endangered species? I'm here because probable lesbian + Sheryl Chee is writing her.

The gang over there sure are chatty aha, good group. As for the endangered species part, lolz, nah, I've seen those girls around but in different hangouts. Maybe we'll have to poach em from different character threads, seen a few of em hitch their wagon to the Vetra love train. That's something I miss actually, back in the pre-DAI days the Sera thread was reeeeeeeeally gay, it was alot of fun, just a chill hangout spot. The squadmate LIs will always have the more pulling power/appeal when it comes to most fans tho as I'm no doubt you're aware. So I just popped into the Gil thread... 47 pages? Oh and I hope if Suvi is our f/f romance that it will be Cullen level quality or better. Like, I never thought in a million years I'd enjoy that romance, but I did.
