Frankly, I preferred Mass Effect without melee, but what really annoys me about the melee weapons in Mass Effect Andromeda and ME3 is that the developers haven't used any restraint to maintain plausibility within the lore; its purely "rule of cool" pandering.
Assuming that you have an omni-tool for example, it isn't especially unrealistic that someone will modify it a bit to allow it to be used as a weapon. There are a lot of parallels to the use of, for example, sharpened spades in World Wars One and Two. Someone at Bioware thus spent the time and effort to try to at least make an excuse for the melee weapons, but then just to pander, they threw in swords.
Now with Mass Effect Andromeda, there is another excellent opportunity to justify a melee weapon with the idea of using mass effect fields to propel a hammer. It would be easy to justify this, not only because people regularly use power tools like nailguns, but also because you could say that the mass effect hammer was used in space in zero G to prevent the astronaut from being pushed away from his work by swinging a tool manually. A big hammer like that could be a multipurpose tool, and an explorer might well have one on hand for collecting core samples of rock and soil, demolitions, construction, and all sorts of utility tasks.
Instead however, not only is the hammer a purpose made melee weapon, but it is a melee weapon designed to be used by an alien the size of a grizzly bear, and power assist or no, it is normally used only by "very strong" Krogan. It really stretches the imagination to suppose that a properly trained soldier would use such a thing, and just to rub it in that this is not simply different, but unrealistic, they throw in "Asari" swords.

Have you read it's description till the end? Ryder is using "baby-sized" krogan hammer.

I might equip something as a last ditch weapon, but I'm sticking with ranged weaponry as my primary means of combat.

I'm actually worried about there implementation. Specifically with regards to multiplayer.
What if it's required that your character carries at least one and it negatively effects your carry weight? What if it's not required but you're at a severe disadvantage if you're not carrying one, but carrying one is a bit too heavy for you to use your powers as often as you'd like?
What if they have no weight, so everyone just uses the same weapon because it has the highest DPS?

What if they have no weight, so everyone just uses the same weapon because it has the highest DPS? If melee slot is unequipped then it switches to default omni-blade, simple as that. This is a shooter (i.e. ranged combat) first and everything else latter. I'd expect it to be completely optional.

I like the addition of them. I also like that they're not too...diverse (?) in the way you can use them. Im happy that they essentially replace the melee button without becoming an entirely new combat system like For Honor or whatever. I like that they're simple.

Does anyone know if regular melee will return, like the biotic punch for example? The idea of hammers and swords is just too cheesy.

I think it's good that they are bringing in more melee, tbh. Biotics are unapologetic space magic, so adding sci-fi melee adds to the coolness factor of the game. I just hope that melee attacks are not a slow as they are in ME3MP. I am always in favor of awesome over the gritty realism. :) Oh, and if possible, no anicancels....
