I'm not keen on stuff like swords and hammers - dedicated melee weapons you have to lug about and which would be awkward to switch with your gun don't really make much sense to me. I'd like to see bayonets, because bayonets make a lot of sense, and I'm OK with omniblades.

I think they have potential, though I'm hoping I won't need one for my snipers. If they're really viable beyond the occasional hack and slash, I think that open some cool roleplaying opportunities re:combat. Your Vanguard loves to charge into battle? Well, maybe they even use their melee weapon more than their gun sometimes!

How do you feel about them? . Melee weapons were obsolete by the 19th Century and should remain so in any universe where high-powered firearms exist. That said, melee weapons have been a thing since ME3, so I figured they'd have a prominent role in any future ME games. That, and I realize I'm probably in the minority in disliking them. Bioware is just giving the fans what they want. I'm not really bothered too much by it because I expected melee weapons to have a larger presence in the series, but if I could wave a magic wand and make them gone, they'd be gone.

I like melee weapons. Even if I'd rather go hand to hand, anything else is more preferable than the standard shooter fare of "hit them with your elbow". Metal Gear Solid and Saints Row have spoiled me with shooting people and being able to kick someone's ass once I'm done with shooting.

Melee weapons were obsolete by the 19th Century and should remain so in any universe where high-powered firearms exist. When you want to melt steel fast you use a welding machine not a flamerthrower. If futuristic melee weapons pack more power due to not wasting it on projecting that power, then if you have futuristic ways of moving around that don't put you in much danger like complete cloak or super fast ways like biotic charge, then I see no problem why you couldn't get up close and personal with someone.

From the last trailer, it seems we will have: Omnitools Asari Swords Krogan hammers Angarian Firaan As straight up melee weapons OR we will be able to equip in that slot: Biotic amplifier Tech Amplifier (I suppose) And at least another couple of buffer/debuffer. So, while I think melee build will be somehow viable, especially played with an infiltrator archetype, it will pay more to specialize in the long run. And biotic strong right in the face never gets old, as far as I’m concerned. Maybe coupled with a plasma pistol to the chest...

I'm fine with them, since I feel that with kinetic barriers being a thing it makes sense that there be some means of getting past them, and in lore they don't deflect melee attacks. Personally, I plan to carry a light sword for roleplay reasons, even if my planned style means I'm not likely to use it much.

Well, melee weapons actually make sense in the ME universe - IIRC from one of the books, shields are only activated by things moving at the speed of the slugs you're shooting. So...stabbing is actually a pretty viable option.

There a couple issues with melee weapons that make them implausible. The first is there is literally nothing a a melee weapon does that a firearm shouldn't be able to do better. Why trade a shotgun or assault rifle for example, for a sword which should be no more deadly at close range than those firearms, and comes packed with the added limitations of relying entirely on muscle power and only being useful when eyeball-to-eyeball with an enemy? Firearms have much greater range, up to hundreds or even a 1000 or more meters, and should be much more deadly both at range and up close, particularly when enemies wear body armor capable of deflecting rounds travelling at more than 1,200 meters per second (the average speed of a modern bullet fired from a rifle...presumably ME rounds are travelling much faster). I realize that. I said as much in my earlier post. Melee weapons have been a thing since ME3.

Possibly, but I think we will have a "power amplifier" kind of gimmick to slot there too, maybe split between biotic and tech, and maybe another buffer regarding base weapon damage. I’m basing this on the evidence on how much ME:A seems derived from ME3 multiplayer… with all its slots and loadout. We will see, I suppose.

But these are futuristic melee weapons, maybe they are super heated or vibrate or whatever ( I am not a scientist ), maybe you don't need any muscle at all, like with a lightsaber for example.

Apparently during my stint in the Marines, I missed all those cool fencing lessons. Sorry to burst your bubble, but modern military personnel have better things to do with their time than being trained to use obsolete weapons. You do get trained to use the bayonet, but the key factor there is that it attaches to your rifle, and doesn't replace it.
