Favorites, that is a power wheel. It looks a little different but compare. vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/masseffect/images/1/19/Powerwheel.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20071206023734It is 4 quadrants instead of 3 but that is it. It has been stated that you have less control over your squad mates, specifically in regards to their power usage. So you won't need the squad member section on the R3 button anymore (Right thumbstick click) and we were told we only had 3 powers so I always wondered what R3 was going to be ever since they showed off L3 still pulling up the weapon wheel. It is the Favorites wheel which "allow you immediate access to your sets of powers so you can change up on the fly." For those counting that is 4 sets of 3 powers. 12 powers. This will most definitely come with a penalty of activating the cool-downs for all abilities when switching because of the change back to individual cool-downs. Wether each ability goes off its own cool-down or there is a temporary global cool-down, every time you switch Favorites, can not be determined yet. It is worth noting that your profile can also be switched with the favorite swap, as Favorite 1 and 4 have the Explorer Profile symbol and 2 looks like Adept, while 3 must be Soldier. This is the most surprising to me, because it will allow you to switch from a biotic focused character to a tech focused character in the middle of combat. I guess the drawback will be how many eggs you want to put in a basket. Especially since the 3 baskets seem to be quite large. A week ago I would have told you that a Sentinel type focus was going to be the weakest because this game seemed to be about focusing on a single discipline over flexibility between disciplines but now I don't know. It will probably be the most popular. The profile switching now also leads me to believe that the mobility option will be equipment based. Example; want Biotic mobilities equip a biotic amp. Which means that this added or reduced weight might affect cool-downs. I have now changed my mind twice about how the mobility change will be handled. Need... more... info... The way Bioware has been keeping its cards close to its chest, at this point, should be a sign of confidence not weakness to you. I can't help but feel the overhype anymore. Yesterday it was "just" a Mass Effect Campaign with ME3 Multiplayer as the gameplay blueprint and Witcher 3 style side quests but now throw in a MGSV amount of flexibility on how to approach a combat scenario and I can't take it. Too much awesome.

I'm confused.
I haven't seen any footage where a favorite is chosen "on-the-fly." From the new video, the Favorites wheel was accessed only via the main menu -> profiles -> Favorites. I thought that we would have a dedicated wheel that you can use during gameplay, just like the Weapon Wheel.

You will have "x" amount of skill points like you said. Then you will create up to four Loadouts (favorites) based off the things you have unlocked. You will not have the ability to respec through favorites. This balances the game because if you want to go hard into biotics and take tech for overload you can. But that overload will suffer from the fact that you won't have any points in the tech passives and have a low level profile to provide additional passives. So if you want to go full adept then you will be much stronger at biotics than a hybrid build because their points will be spread thinner. Also it will level your profiles (classess) more. In the video it shows that you will need 50 points in tech and 50 points in combat to level your infiltrator profile from rank 3 to rank 4. This will increase your passive bonuses. For Infiltrator that will be headshot damage, tech recharge, Weapon stability, and weapon accuracy. There more you go after a particular profile the stronger that will be.

More power options are always welcome.
Now, hold that hype until they show us some story bits, dialogue options and CC. Then, if it's good, you can unleash it upon us all.

Just like how in DA:I you only had a couple powers of your 8 available at the beginning of the game. Towards the end of the game and especially on a NG+ the options on how you approach a combat situation will be exceptional.

I'm glad that they have included a way to switch power sets during combat, as this opens up a lot more options. However I don't think that the favourites wheel is very similar to the power wheel (other than the fact that it is a wheel).
The power wheel gave you a tactical pause option, which could be used to select your preferred power, aim it at an enemy and then automatically use it once the wheel button was released. This new wheel just lets us switch between profiles with different skill loadouts. We'll still have to aim and use all of our skills in real time. Functionally, the two wheels seem very different to me.
I think the weapon wheel and the favourites wheel are likely to be accessed by holding down L1 and R1 respectively. That's how the wheels were accessed in the Trilogy. L3 and R3 were sprint and melee in ME3.
Also I don't think we will have separate biotic implant/omni tool upgrades. We will already have an advanced implant that SAM is supposed to be able to access to allow us to switch between combat, biotic and tech proficiencies. I won't be upset if I'm wrong about this tho.

How you describes the favorite wheels functionality is exactly what I was talking about. All real-time. I was just referring to the fact that The favorite screen had the same UI as a "Wheel." It may not be L3 or R3. It could be up and down on d-pad. With left and right being squad-mate simple commands. The biotic implant reference was just me spitballing. We don't have enough evidence, I just didn't see anything listed in the Favorites that showed different mobility so it has to be selected from somewhere else. I'm think a mobility equip slot. Thrusters would be an option along with whatever gives biotic mobility. Also since you can use the classic roll it might be when you don't have anything equipped in that slot and could benefit with reduced weight for cool downs. That is just speculation though.

Fair enough! I misunderstood. I don't think mobility will be related to the profiles or powers in the favourites at all tho. Each player will probably use their jet pack in the same way (like all players had combat roll in ME3), which I'm pretty sure can be upgraded separately. I'm also thinking that there won't be a hotkey for switching profiles. More likely it will just be: hold R1 to bring up favourites wheel -> use stick to select desired profile (up, down, left, right) -> release R1. Of course, I might be completely wrong! I hope that the dpad is for things like squad commands and medigel.

I agree about the mobility not being affected by profiles which I was I said I thought it was tied to an equipment slot. I have seen biotic blink, biotic jump, and biotic hover. This is what I beleive you can full swap your mobility and get rid of the thrusters. R1 and L1 are your active abilities along with the 3rd being both R1 and L1. So it can't be that. It can't even be hold down because some powers have a hold down option. I believe sprint was tied to A or X console respective so I am pretty sure the Wheels will be L3, R3. In multiplayer we know that the d-pad has essentially the same items in the same slot as ME3 multi. So I think you are correct about the D-pad.

So I think you are correct about the D-pad. A/X is the jet pack so sprint will be something else. Considering we use the left stick for movement and to take cover, my bet is they went with L3 for sprint since its commonly there in shooters. If it isn't, you wouldn't be able to move the camera while sprinting which goes against the whole mobile "Destiny" style gameplay. The wheels will most likely be assigned to the DPad since we no longer directly give commands to squad mates. The hot key commands might still be there on the left and right dpads but its scenario based. I think we can tell them to act, but they decide what works best in each scenario. Or it's similar to the link strike system in Final Fantasy XV where your squad mates attack, react, or combo based on your moves.

Do you have insider knowledge or is this speculation based on the Gameplay video? Because nowhere in that video did they show this switch happening real-time in combat. It might, but I don't now how you could be certain of this just yet.

This is what I beleive you can full swap your mobility and get rid of the thrusters. Where did you hear we had these different movement options? I heard we'll all just use the jetpack dodge regardless of which powers or profiles we choose, at least in SP. Basically the same way that all Shepard classes used combat roll in ME3. EDIT: I take it back, just saw the biotic dash when I re-watched the trailer! Very interesting. Ah, fair point. In ME2 and 3, you tapped L1 and R1 for powers and held them for the weapon and power wheels. But you're right, I forgot that holding these buttons in MEA will use secondary functions for some powers. I'd still be surprised if the wheels are L3 and R3, just because they've typically been used for other functions in the trilogy, although there will apparently be multiple controller layout options. Maybe the select/back button and/or one/two of the dpad buttons are involved.

I can see this being useful throughout a battle even if you stick to one class, for example:
Favorite 1: Default Adept
Singularity Lance Shockwave
Favorite 2: Fury
Annihilation Lance Throw
Favorite 3: Ultra Defensive
Containment Backlash Throw
Favorite 4: Vanguard
Biotic Charge Pull Nova

My first inclination on the fury profile was pull and throw but I went with Lance as a possible replacement for dark channel but yes pull would probably have better synergy with Annihilation .

I can see this being useful throughout a battle even if you stick to one class, for example: Favorite 1: Default Adept Singularity Lance Shockwave Favorite 2: Fury Annihilation Lance Throw Favorite 3: Ultra Defensive Containment Backlash Throw Favorite 4: Vanguard Biotic Charge Pull Nova I think we are still able to use abilities from other classes even if the profile is only for biotics. Yeah true, the combat video shows different class profiles for each of the favorites but for me personally i'd rather do a highly focused adept run or a specifically focused sentinel build than just throw caution to the wind like a wild kid in a sweet shop using lots of under-developed profiles or picking abilities from trees that don't benefit from the core profile i'm building around.

I don't think we yet have conclusive proof that the favourites wheel can be opened with a single control. (Though if Tiberius is passing, a nod would be nice - though can understand if this is withheld to the appropriate video) What we do know is this (worst case scenario) - sorry for the large graphic, required to explain: - From the Game Awards trailer (Dec 1st) we know the weapons wheel had 2 controls: Use and Holster.
- From this week's Combat trailer, one additional option now exists: 'View Favorites'
- And the favorites wheel allows a different powers loadout to be selected.
The takeaways from this: BioWare have listened. The favorites option was not there on December 1st. Even if I have to change powers loadout by pressing: (Weapon wheel) - (X) - (Stick select loadout) - (X) - ( - (Release Weapon wheel) It's viable, and if you do it 10,000 times it will become automatic. ok, even better would be either: a) another control opens the favorites wheel directly, or D-Pad changes loadout [1-4] when the Weapons wheel is open But hey, progress people...

Honestly, I can see the cluster fuck that could happen if there is a hot button for each favorite so i don't really care if it pauses the menu to select the favorite I want to use. If I can do it in combat, that is all that matters.

Do you have insider knowledge or is this speculation based on the Gameplay video? Because nowhere in that video did they show this switch happening real-time in combat. It might, but I don't now how you could be certain of this just yet. Dev confirmation on twitter. Also they've confirmed that Profiles and Favourites will be the next video I believe.
