The thread title is a complete lie. I don't have any questions yet. For those not fortunate enough to have followed parts 1 and 2 of my back-asswards playthrough of this trilogy, I grudgingly decided to play ME2 only because EA made it free on Origin, and then I quickly decided that it was a pretty ok game after all. With the help of some lovely people, I managed to overcome my poor understanding of morality points just enough to not kill off my squad. Thankfully, Shepard survived ME3 and is currently living a nice headcanon with her beloved Space Raptor, so I've decided that at least a second playthrough is in my future. However, certain results and lost loyalties in ME2 -- all due to not having high enough morality scores -- still bug me, so it's time for Shepard to get her perfect worldstate, with the perfect history. And that means finally playing ME1. Here I go! Maybe I'll get it right the first time?

So, first impressions. I miss Shepard's freckles, and I think she actually looks younger from game to game rather than older.
It's Joker! And Kaidan! And...is that--?? No. Of course not. Some other turian. I know Garrus comes later. Still sad.
Clicked on the galaxy map...only the commanding officer may specify a destination. Give me my ship back, dammit!
Is it just me, or does Jennifer Hale sound sweeter and higher pitched in this game?
Any general advice on choosing skills to level? I'm still playing as an engineer. Is it worth putting lots of points toward charm and/or renegade?
Edit: I don't suppose there is a high resolution texture pack I can download for this game? It's almost painful to look at.

Link to Basic Engineer Leveling Guide by capn233 : bsn.boards.net/thread/2291/me1-basic-engineer-leveling-guide. I should say that it does step you through the game a little bit (perhaps minor spoilers), but you can just sort of read it a section at a time as you actually progress through the game yourself. If you're playing as a paragon and you want to be able to use charm dialogue even in the conversations with the highest check, you'll eventually want to put 8 points into charm (the other 4 will come from freebies that you'll get at intervals during the game). If you're playing as a renegade, the checks are a little easier and you can get away with putting 6 points into intimidate (with 4 free points). This is because the highest paragon check requires 12 charm points and the highest intimidate check requires only 10 points.

There's a texture mod for ME1 on NexusMods. But that's for PC and I don't remember what system you play on. As for "your" ship, remember that in your game play to date the only thing you've done on this ship is die. In fact, it's the very first thing you did. Now you need to earn your command! There are no Paragon/Renegade interrupts in ME1. You will sometimes get options for Paragon (top left) or Renegade (bottom left) but if you don't have sufficient reputation and points in Charm or Intimidate, you may not be able to choose those options (they'll be gray instead of blue or red). You overall have more options but choosing to place points in Charm or Intimidate. There are times when it may make a huge difference being able to choose a Paragon or Renegade option.

ME1. Not bad. There's one place that offers the best view in the trilogy. I know my Shepard takes several minutes admiring the view. If you like, I can tell you the fastest way to complete the game. Or would you like to know how to finish the game with only 3 squadmates? Yes that can happen. I'm curious to what your thoughts will be when you use the ..........during missions.

This is because the highest paragon check requires 12 charm points and the highest intimidate check requires only 10 points. Does that make Canon Shepard a Renegade? Heh... the default Shepard is Earthborn, which is the background that gives you the most renegade points to start with. One thing to note, although I typed it a zillion times 10 intimidate isn't technically going to pass every check, but it is really all you need. The two exceptions off-hand are the last one with Saren which is 12 if you don't take the persuade choice on Virmire (but only 10 if you do), and the last check with Rafael Vargas is 11... but that one doesn't really add much and isn't needed to complete the quest. IIRC to get through all in Snap Inspection you need 9, but it is so early it is hard to get that many unless you invest really heavily early, or just don't go back to the Citadel for a long time.

The texture mod finally downloaded. It is now installing itself while playing tear-jerking music. ME1. Not bad. There's one place that has a mission that offers the best view in the trilogy. I know my Shepard takes several minutes admiring the view. If you like, I can tell you the fastest way to complete the game. Or would you like to know how to finish the game with only 3 squadmates? Yes that can happen. I'm curious to what your thoughts will be when you use the ..........during missions. Lol. I'll pass for now. Let's see how much I like this game. If I get tired of it and want to move on to ME2 again, you can tell me then. How long is the fastest playthrough, though? I'm going to be extremely curious until I figure out what............is I assume I'll know it when I see it. So. Anderson began the trilogy as a white man with a melted face. Interesting. I figured that he was a light skinned black guy. Funny because I've heard that Steve Cortez was originally lighter skinned but then they made him darker. Guess the same went for Anderson. Lol. My asian/hispanic/I-don't-even-know-anymore Shepard is darker than Anderson is And his face is definitely melting with those awful default textures. So...just insert your own Ark of the Covenant joke here, I guess. Does that make Canon Shepard a Renegade? Heh... the default Shepard is Earthborn, which is the background that gives you the most renegade points to start with. One thing to note, although I typed it a zillion times 10 intimidate isn't technically going to pass every check, but it is really all you need. IIRC to get through all in Snap Inspection you need 9, but it is so early it is hard to get that many unless you invest really heavily early, or just don't go back to the Citadel for a long time. Thankfully, much of that is gibberish to me at this point. This is my first ME1 run.

Paragon Shepard is kind of a snooze fest so far. Line delivery is very flat. While I want to import a goody-goody into ME2, I also don't want to be bored by her. How much will it screw me up to choose some bottom-right dialogue options as long as I put plenty of points into charm?

I just rage-quit over the first decryption door. There is no mod for it at Nexusmods. Please tell me I won't have to do this very often, or that I can soon purchase an upgrade to auto-complete them.
Actually, I need to check the settings to see if there is some way around having to do them.
Hacking in ME2 was a breeze. This, I don't like.
On a positive note, the textures are an enormous improvement, and Shepard has her freckles back.

I went back to the door and finally made it through. I got a message that I can use omni-gel to bypass decryption puzzles, but then I didn't see that option anywhere to actually do it. This door gave me endless tries, presumably because I needed to open it for the plot? I failed the next one because I didn't realize I would only get one chance, and hadn't saved.
Hope it wasn't hiding anything important?
Saren is...quite the comic book villain, isn't he?

Hope it wasn't hiding anything important? Saren is...quite the comic book villain, isn't he? I think those door puzzles are easy once you get used to them. You just have to be patient. Omni-gel isn't offered unless you fail to open the door. Keep in mind that if you want to go that route you'll have to have a steady supply of omni-gel. You can break down any weapons, armor or upgrades into omni-gel but we sure you don't want to sell those items for credits instead. There's a puzzle on Noveria (that's the limit of what I'll say here) that some found to be extremely difficult but is really very easy if you take the time to examine it. For this particular puzzle, if you can't figure it out, solutions exist online. Saren has a lot of background to him. If you're interested, the novel Mass Effect: Revelation gives more on his past. Also, you'll learn his motivations soon enough.

Does that make Canon Shepard a Renegade? I actually think, for ME1, the canon Shepard is equally paragon and renegade, with the player putting points into both charm and intimidate as they go along. Of course, doing it that way makes Shepard a little weaker in combat, but it's what gets the maximum P/R import bonuses going into ME2 and sets the player up so that they can then lean more heavily towards being a paragon or a renegade. I think ME2 is where the player is supposed to set Shepard's demeanor (although, with those import bonuses max'd out, it is very possible to also play a split character in ME2 if one really knows when to trigger those arguments and do certain LMs). Finally, I think the player is meant to continue that strong leaning towards either paragon or renegade into ME3 (where there are actually very few neutral choices available... but most things only give you neutral reputation points.

Hope it wasn't hiding anything important? Saren is...quite the comic book villain, isn't he? You're probably missing a tiny encounter and a better than average weapon for that early stage of the game. Best strategy is to save before attempting to unlock anything. Use omni-gel if you've got it or if you've got junk weapons on you that you can break down into omni-gel... otherwise, reload and try again. The weapons and mods in those crates will level up as you do. ME1 has a really cumbersome inventory system and you'll wind up with a ton of loot that will likely be already obsolete before you collect it, but you need ot keep you're eyes open for the "better" stuff you'll bet by chance (it's a little like Borderlands that way). You will soon have a way to sell off your junk for credits and buy some gear (and eventually the nicest gear in the game if you save your credits). Saren... Well, at least they didn't give him a moustache to twirl.

IIRC to get through all in Snap Inspection you need 9, but it is so early it is hard to get that many unless you invest really heavily early, or just don't go back to the Citadel for a long time. Gosh, I hate to correct you... but default Shepard is earthborn sole survivor (which gives 5 paragon and 15 renegade points)... not earthborn ruthless (which gives 0 paragon and 20 renegade points). Yes, I worded that bit about the intimidate points improperly... sorry.

Heh... the default Shepard is Earthborn, which is the background that gives you the most renegade points to start with. Gosh, I hate to correct you... but default Shepard is earthborn sole survivor (which gives 5 paragon and 15 renegade points)... not earthborn ruthless (which gives 0 paragon and 20 renegade points). That was supposed to be tongue in cheek since there is no canon, and I accidentally put background instead of "pre-service history" because I couldn't remember what the game called that part exactly. You are right the combo of the history and psychological profile isn't the highest.

Ashley: I can't tell the aliens from the animals. Wow, what a bitch. I can make sure she dies at the end, right?

On holiday on Dantooine. This whole "vengeance on the Jedi" thing gets very tiring after a while.

Just entered the tower, saw Garrus up ahead, and went, "eeeeee!" out loud. All high-pitched and everything. Also, I'm going to have to fight that big ship at some point, I just know it. I mean, after saying how lucky they are to have that ship on our side, I know it can't last. For some reason, I had thought that being a spectre was just part of Shepard's backstory, so when I got a dialogue option yesterday asking what a spectre was, I thought it was another "what's a Mythal?" moment. But no, Shepard becomes a spectre some time during ME1. That should be interesting to see. Ashley: I can't tell the aliens from the animals. Wow, what a bitch. I can make sure she dies at the end, right? Well, given your feelings about Kaidan... I think she's already dead and just doesn't know it yet. I don't have particularly strong feelings about Kaidan. I like him well enough I enjoyed seeing a friendly face right from the beginning here, though. Ashley: I can't tell the aliens from the animals. Wow, what a bitch. I can make sure she dies at the end, right? No, what you should do (if you're planning to carry this character into 2 and 3) is keep her alive, then shoot her in 3. Lol. I will consider it, if I can put up with her that long.
