I'm on a planet in the Hades Gamma to rescue some scientists. I found a turian escape pod with some insignia inside, but no survivors. There is also a thresher maw. Why is there a goddamn thresher maw? I shot it a few times with the cannon, and then drove away as fast as I could. The Mako actually went vertical. Shoot the thresher maw with the Mako, then jump to avoid its shot; repeat until it's dead.

I think they all have comments about the cold. It's quite frozen out there.
Even Joker comments about it after the mission is done, and he got to stay in the ship the whole time!
I think they all have comments about the cold. It's quite frozen out there. Do they all huddle inside the airlock like little wimps?
Never had that happen. Weirdest glitch I had in ME1 did involve Wrex and Garrus though. Wrex went down and disappeared - I couldn't find him anywhere. Then, Garrus started speaking Wrex's lines in Wrex's voice. It was SO bizarre!

I've been running around Noveria, and I'm about to get locked into the quarantine area to try to find the scientists' notes on their bio weapon so they can cure themselves. I'm feeling rather unenthusiastic about the main story of this game, but that's probably my fault for spending so much time so far on side quests...?

Awesome! I was hoping I'd get to give that rude Asari a piece of my mind. Killing her is even better! Ashley helpfully informed me, after I stumbled upon the dead guard, that the asari must have killed him. You think so? What makes you say that, Ashley?

Will Joker ever have anything new to say? All I can really do is ask for the ship's status or ask about his disease, which makes him mad.

*scratches head* So...Kaidan's version of flirting is to accuse me of being with Liara, and then tell me a drawn-out story about his time at biotics camp? I'm pretty bad at flirting myself, but this is ridiculous Edit: You know what? Fuck it. If Kaidan thinks I'm flirting with Liara, then I'm going to go flirt with Liara. It's not like it matters, anyway. Once I go back to "fix" ME2, it's all Garrus again.

About the only time he has something new to say is after one of the plot missions.

Ninjamance is a common occurrence in ME1. If you are nice (top right responses) to both romance options, they both believe you are interested in the other and will say so. It's super annoying. If it goes on long enough, then after the next main mission the two of them will corner you and make you pick one or the other. I think I only had that happen once, with one of my male Shepards.

I picked up a mission from Garrus (I hope I get to kill the mad scientist!) and Tali hinted at one of her own.
I love how she says she rarely saw her dad smile. He's quarian, Tali. No one sees him smile.

Do I have to do a certain number of side missions in order to be able to get a good outcome to this game? Or can I skip a lot of these "assignments" and UNC missions?

You can skip them all as far as the outcome of ME1 is concerned. However, there are repercussions in ME3 for skipping things, and you'd honestly never be able to tell which are important and which aren't. All I can say as that even the dumbest things (asari writings, for example) can impact potential war assets in ME3. Then there are bigger side missions that are meaningless. I'd just do it all to be safe.

I skipped side missions in ME3 and still ended up with enough war assets to get the best ending, but I don't know whether that includes ME1 assets or not.

Yes you do have to complete a number of side missions to get the best outcome. The game will know if you have or have not. If you don't, it will cause your computer to explode forcing you to buy a new one and a another copy of the game. Its not a pretty sight. It destroyed my ps3. That was a sad day. There is no requirement to complete any of those assignments to get the ending.

You had me for a second there I wouldn't hesitate to complete most of the side missions, if not for the fact that I have to drive to most of them in that horrible, spastic tank they forced on me.

The only one is collecting 10 asari writings and purchasing the Elkoss Combine Armor License. If not you will only miss 4 war assets. I would do it just for the extra dialogue with Conrad in ME3 The rest of the assets is dependent on what you do during the main missions.

I would do it just for the extra dialogue with Conrad in ME3 The rest of the assets is dependent on what you do during the main missions. I have the license already, I think. I need to go talk to Conrad a third time, though. You can do planetary exploration without driving the mako; that is, you can get out of the mako and walk extensively around the planets. However, you get stuck by not being able to climb where you need to go to reach everything and you have to walk all the way back to the mako to leave the planet. (Not good level design, IMO) Below, in the spoiler is a list of the planets that have Asari Writingss on them, so you can focus yourself on just getting the 10 asari writings that have an impact on ME3 if you wish (It's slightly spoilery because I named and slightly described the missions that are on some of the planets, but I think it's probably within your tolerance levels; and some of them I suspect you've already done): Note: You can get 8 of the 10 Asari Writings required by scanning the systems from orbit, leaving only 2 that you'll need to land on a planet and drive the mako to obtain.
Asari Writing you can get just by scanning planets from orbit:
1. Porolan (Macedon System, Artemis Tau Cluster) 2. Ploba (Anteaus System, Hades Gamma Cluster) 3. Paravin (Hans System, Gemini Sigma Cluster) 4. Klencory (Newton System, Keplar Verge) 5. Matar (Hong System, Armstrong Nebula) 6. Junthor (Gagarin System, Armstrong Nebula) 7. Veles (Pax System, Horsehead Nebula) 8. Pataiton (Vostok System, Maroon Sea Cluster)
Some of the above clusters open up only after either Feros or Noveria main missions are completed (that is; there are terminals on these missions that open up some clusters on the Galaxy Map)
That leaves only two you need to get while actually landing on a planet:
Sharjila (Macedon System, Artemis Tau Cluster) - UNC - Asari Diplomacy mission (given to Shepard by Nassana Dantius after 1st main plot missiom completed; will influence some dialogue on Thane's recruitment mission in ME2) Ontarom (Newton System, Kepler Verge) - UNC - Dead Scientists mission (is the background mission for a Sole Survivor Shepard; depending on decisions made, it may result in Shepard receiving an email in ME2 from Corporal Toombs) Tuntau (Phoenix System, Argos Rho cluster) - Wrex - Family Armor mission (equivalent of a loyalty mission in ME1, may affect the status of Wrex later on in ME1, depending on Shepard's ability to charm or intimidate or lack thereof)
These planets also have asari writings, but the main missions on these planets are part of sequence involving missions first on still other planets that don't have Asari Writings:
Solcrum (Grissom System, Armstrong Nebula) - last planet in a 5-mission series that acquires Tali's data and results in an optional dialogue path in ME2) Altahe (Acheron System, Styx Theta Cluster) - 2nd mission in a 2-mission series that opens up after Noveria plot mission is completed Nonuel (Plutius System, Hades Gamma Cluster) - Renegade Morality Alignment mission, requires a certain level of renegade points to unlock (planet contain 2 sets of Asari writings) Chohe (Cacus System, Hades Gamma Cluster) - Paragon Morality Alignment mission, requires a certain level of paragon points to unlock (planet contains 3 sets of Asari writings)
... and you will need to talk to Conrad 3 times to complete "The Fan" mission in ME1 and set up to do the quest involving him in ME2, and the one involving him and Jenna in ME3.
