Horizon has slightly less depth in many RPG elements particularly the narrative and character you play as, but it has a lot of ME:A's appeal stolen already. I just took a look at this:
It strikes me that the "run and gun" gameplay with a frantic pace, almost Vanquish-esque has a similar feel from an observer's POV for both Horizon and the shown MEA footage. They both have dialogue systems with a special kind of facial animation technology and Horizon obviously looks better (both still look janky because of the format) and both have a form of crafting and exploration.
I'm not worried because I don't personally let review scores influence me too much, but I'm kind of afraid that because you have Horizon, a mechanically tight action RPG experience, vs Andromeda that is probably much less tight that from most popular reviewers they're already looking very superficially at the storytelling so MEA's facial animations will just put them off, and I wouldn't be surprised if this will be the first Mass Effect to fall below 8/10 on average.
There's just something about it. I felt like every second outlet had a hint of skepticism towards MEA after the preview, and I don't think polish is all it takes to change that if it's really the case.

To be honest I don't really expect Horizon to have much of an impact on ME:A review scores, if any.

That inventory UI is atrocious though lel

I'm buying HZD, since I don't play many games, and it's derivative elements won't feel so derivative to me. I don't think it will be compared to MEA very seriously. They're not at all the same type of game. I fully expect the RPG elements of HZD to be pretty shallow. It's going to be Assassin's Creed with robot dinosaurs and dialogue options; and I'm okay with that.

What, Sonys Witcher-3-like-hail-mary-our-console-doesn't-pay-off? Nah... no PS4 exclusive could endanger a Mass Effect game.

Proper hyped for both games though, just hope I can complete Horizon in the 3 weeks prior to Andromeda.

Can someone please explain to me what the hell horizon is exactly? I see it mentioned on here all the time - it's a PS4 exclusive yes? And? Is it a sci-fi space opera like Mass Effect? Why should I care about this game when I own a PC?

I think the skepticism sorrounding the game will prevent most people from amassing insanely high hopes (like DA:I) and then being disappointed.
I know nearly nothing about Horizon. Just that a friend of mine told me I should buy it.

Horizon has the same amount of RPG elements as ME2 and ME3 (Dialogue trees, upgrades, customization) with the crafting and resource gathering of ME:A. The world areas are gorgeous and diverse, and the robots all feel like Zelda bosses. Again with the open world elements vs on the rail elements, Horizon proves that the open world concepts/mechanics seen in multiple games can be quite awesome if done correctly. It also proves that an open world/sandbox can indeed have an incredible story.
I hope Mass Effect is as good, but I think it will be lacking that extra bit of polish, detail, and immersion. Teleporting in/out of the Nomad in a jarring way is one example of the lack of attention to detail.
IGN gave Horizon a 9.3. I'm predicting an 8.5 for Mass Effect: Andromeda.

HZD was basically hyped in exactly the same way as most new Blizzard IPs are:
Here! Look at this new game! It is great! Believe us! Go buy it!
For some reason, that kind of "matter of fact" marketing works these days... beats me why.
...and yea, ratings mean nothing with games like that, they are just part of said marketing.

For some reason, that kind of "matter of fact" marketing works these days... beats me why. I would say the awesome E3 trailer is what got most people hyped. It was unlike anything people have seen before so they were intrigued. The near perfect reviews from every gaming source is what will sell this game. When I hear it is by far the best looking game on PS4 (more so than Uncharted 4) with possibly a better story and gameplay than The Last Us, there is no doubt in my mind that I would buy Horizon day one.

Am I the only one looking forward to HZD? Huh. I don't think it was hyped unfairly- reviews are stellar and most people seemed to have liked it. It's the first game I have ever preordered. I don't think it will impact MEA whatsoever - bioware has a month after the HZD release to hype up andromeda. HZD's hype is already fading as more and more people get their hands on the game and people are bound to be more excited for something which they don't have.

I never said it was hyped unfairly - Overwatch wasn't either - all I'm saying is that games like that tend to fail very rarely, because they "bumrush" the market out of nowhere and succeed... that's what they are made for: Maximum mass market appeal and success. Still, I don't care for it... I neither find the premise imaginative, nor do I think the gameplay looks intriguing, and I don't own a PS4, so: Meh.

For some reason, that kind of "matter of fact" marketing works these days... beats me why. ...and yea, ratings mean nothing with games like that, they are just part of said marketing. Because the vast majority of gamers aren't like us typing nonstop in forum debates. They're bros that play games for fun in their sparetime like I used to when I was 17 and then that sorta called for less attention and less "deep" experiences, and games like Horizon would've been my kind of jam back when I was a teenager. I think the marketing works becuase the appeal of the gameplay itself hits home with millions of gamers who don't need games to have deep stories. They do want stories but to a lot of people, including my friends, storytelling comes from the sight of a human being looking dramatic rather than the context of a good script or universe. There's a reason why Marvel movies are so greatThat's also why you'll see the mere notion of a strong female protagonist and (from what I've heard) great racial/ethnic diversity be great for the story. Most people don't really care beyond the surface. They just want that tokenism and it must mean that the game is really respectful and representative for human diversity. I don't wanna give off the impression I think the inclusion of many different skin colors on average in HZD is bad, I just think it sounds like a token-effort and attention-grab rather than something the authors really made because they were passionate about it. It represents the many types of people that'll want to play HZD, that's okay.

Why should I care about this game when I own a PC? Because it executes the dialogue, resource gathering, crafting, exploration, use of vehicles, open ended approach to combat, and story so well in an Open world setting. Something Dragon Age and Mass Effect are trying to do. Most people on this forum argue that all the side quests, open world exploration, resource gathering, vehicle portions, new dialogue options, etc will distract from the Mass Effect: Andromeda story making it to similar to Dragon Age: Inquisition and ultimately not as good as the linear stories of the Original trilogy. If you only play on pc, then no you shouldn't care so no reason to post here.

Just out of interest do people enjoy a game less if they find out it got a low critical score, and vice versa? Surely it's what you think that matters.
