Trending off spidergate I thought I'd make a thread about your personal phobias and fears. For myself. Needles. As a kid/teenager I would literally pass out if given a needle. I learned to cope with it and have few problems with them now, but it will always be uncomfortable and something I have to manage. Curiously enough I use the welsh proverb, "Anger is as good as courage" to get past the fear. I actually have to work myself into a right pissed mood before I can handle them. I'm open about it with the nurses so they'll usually just look on with a smirk. Many many many of the people around me are afraid of spiders, but a few have an actual phobia of them. My landlord is one. Otherwise a pretty tough sports guy, when it comes to spiders he just can't do it. Like, go near, anything. I have a longstanding tradition of pest removal services for my mother, roommates, and now landlord though so that works... unless I'm out. One of my early highschool buddies had the typical "afraid of clowns" phobia, god we jerks about that though. At that time, like 13 years old. Terrible age... Anyways, you? How do you cope? (Or do you, lol? )

Snakes. I grew up on a farm in an area where we regularly had snakes in the house; mostly tree and carpet pythons, but also king browns, which is one of the most venomous in the world. I have so many fucked up snake memories from my childhood, and have had recurring nightmares about them over the years. Even now, in my secure apartment in the frozen wasteland of Canada, when I hear my cats knocking stuff around, there's always a shot of immediate, knee-jerk terror that it's actually a snake. For that matter, sometimes I get freaked out even looking at my cat's face because his eyes remind me of snake eyes. Just. Can't. Also spiders, clowns, heights and to a lesser extent, doctors (or at least the whole going to the doctor experience. I will 100% die of something preventable because I was too terrified to go to a clinic, guarantee. )

I have a phobia of moths and butterflies. So no opening windows at night when the lights are on. And all the girly stuff that have butterflies on them look gross to me.

It doesn't fall into true phobia but I have an irrational hate on for the Praying Mantis. All other insects I could happily have crawl over me, but those little green swaying bastards need to die. They make me shudder and if I can't remove myself, shake and hyperventilate. Worst encounter I've had, I was driving on the motorway when one crawled out of the air vent onto the dash then onto my steering wheel. Screaming and shaking like a complete wuss as it swayed closer and closer to my fingers, I found the next random exit, slammed on the breaks, jumped out and paced about until I calmed down enough to deal with it. The car was lucky I didn't set fire to it.

Those amusement park rides that lift you up and then drop you really suddenly, then lift you up and drop you again, and again and again and again until the ride is over. It's less that I fear them (I more or less fear all kinds of falling from great heights), but the constant up and down movement makes me sick.

Always great that I'm going to crash and die or catch a disease while contained. Crashes are actually not very dangerous unless the plane crashes very soon after lifting off or straight up some some Final Destination shit and explodes, or rams into the side of a mountain or something. The disease part I agree with though.

Spiders? They're fine. Snakes? Adorable. Moth? Harmless. You want to know what gets to me? Toads. Or large frogs. Little ones are fine, but seeing one of these toads in real life scares the christ out of me.

Slugs. Horrible, irrational loathing of their existence. Did NOT help watching that episode,"Monsters inside me" where a group of students ate a salad with a chopped up snail and had parasites in their brain because of it.

Wasps and Hornets - I know you shouldn't do it, but if I see a Wasp, or a Hornet I immediately flee. Bees and Bumblebees are cute tho. Also falling - it really isn't the height but that the thing I'm standing on might crumble/fall over and then I might fall down. Like, I had no problems of going onto the Tokyo Tower and looking down the floor window down to the ground, or even standing on it, but when I stand on a ladder I'm scared and afraid of standing on the highest step, because the ladder might fall over. I'm also afraid that someone I care about, might fall of the ladder they're standing on. When I was little my mom stood on the first step of the ladder to the attic and I started crying because I thought she might fall down.

I was kicked by a horse when I was kid and had to undergo a craniectomy. A side effect of the injury was hyperacusis (very sensitive hearing), and as result of that I developed phonophobia; a fear of certain types of noises - specifically "explosive" noises such as fireworks, gunfire, thunder or even balloons popping. I have to keep industrial grade earplugs with me at all times because loud, sudden noises will send me into a panic attack.
It's embarrassing sometimes, having to ask if there will be balloons at a party I've been invited to (and then politely declining if they are) and the 4th of July is my least favorite holiday because of all the fireworks going off.

Needles and my blood, as in someone taking my blood sample. You'll find my ass lying on the ground, passed out. I prefer to keep my blood in me, thank you. I don't like heights and I'll be damned if I get on a plane. I'd get on a boat over deep water first and I don't like deep water. Deep water is a rational fear, lets just say I know what it feels like to drown.

I'm not sure if I have a phobia. I'm not a fan of falling from great heights though. Games like Assassin's Creed really fuck me up. I get all numb in my feet.

- Wasps, hornets, crawly things, spiders. Doesn't help that all our spiders are absolutely harmless here, and husband finds the 'aww cute and small'. (Fine with snakes) - Certain types of heights, as I've grown older (Was fine when younger, and still totally ok with planes though) - Needles/syringes, excluding tattoo machines

I only have one major fear and that is getting eaten by something while swimming, usually and most commonly sharks but can be anything else like crocodiles, piranhas or giant sea monsters. It's that irrational fear where if I'm swimming in deep water or under water and you get that tingling feeling as if something is gonna come from below and take a bit out of you, especially if the water is muddy or opaque.
I've gotten used to it and it's not all that much of an issue now but it's still something that's at the back of my mind when I'm going swimming. Ideally one day I'd like to actually swim with the sharks so that I can put this away. All the other usual phobias, I can handle no problem.

Spiders.
Fire ants, if youve ever accidentally stood on a nest you'll understand why.
No problems with crocs snakes sharks or squid. But i will not go near, let alone touch a live octopus.

I have arachnophobia, I've had it for several years, since I was a little kid. I literally used to freeze and shake and not be able to breathe when I saw even the tiniest spider but ever since I got divorced and had to face the spiders myself, I've been "better" with my phobia. I can now take the smaller ones out with a long duster stick, I don't kill them, I don't kill... I take a deep breath and push all of my fear aside, get stone cold, and then I quickly take the stick and let the spider crawl onto it and let it outside, close the door and hyperventilate or get an asthma attack lol

Crane flies. They look like giant, mutant mosquitoes and are so stupid they will literally fly into your face. Can't stand them. Not crazy about spiders either.
