Amazing game. Currently playing it (already got two endings) and loving it. My only regret is that the world is a bit too empty. More wildlife would have been great, as well as the Machines not always spawning in the same areas. Also, this:

Just finished Ending B. Not much to say, other than my fear that replaying most of Ending A was going to be boring was mostly unfounded. Especially towards the end, having 9S's POv was done well. And, of course, the BIG REVEAL ... which frankly I had already guessed pretty early into Ending A.
On to Ending C and WOW ... the first 30 minutes of my Ending C run was a f--king punch in the gut. Did not see that, or that, or THAT coming.

I can't stand playing as 9S. He looks and sounds ridiculous. Must i really do a whole playthrough with him in order to progress through the story?

Sucks for me smh Honestly, he becomes one of the most powerful characters in the game, just learn his mechanics and you'll be wiping robots out in seconds. The thing with NieR and Yoko Taro games in general is that there will be things about the games that won't sit right with everyone--But if you persevere you'll get something extraordinary out of it in return.

Sucks for me smh Don't give up on him yet. He has a story arc and he's quite a different character in C than he is in A or B. In B, I put the Machine Mask on him for the whole run. That helped. I took it off in C, though. It wasn't right.

Just popping to to say: I friggin LOVE this game... since the premature end of the Xenosaga series and Suikoden V, I didn't enjoy a Japanese RPG that much. I just got to the amusement park, and the music, the atmosphere, the combat, the character progression,... just WOW! ...ok, I'm done, all good.

Me too, the Amusement Park was totally off-the-wall unexpected, and yet, so fitting! Anyone else ride the roller coaster just for the fun of it? I think I did 3 rides in a row once.

What is even more interesting about the Amusement Park is that gradually changes as the story progresses, and the soundtrack compliments this. It's part of what makes the world feel alive in this game, every location is brindled with its own musical score that helps make it feel alive.

I just finished C, D, and E.
HOLY F**K!
I take back what I said about the story being unsatisfying. The first 30 minutes of my Ending C run turned that around completely and it just kept getting better from there. Incredibly, unbelievably sad. Sneaky and illusive, and yet all fitting together like a jigsaw puzzle. And the evolution of the relationships between the characters, incredible.
E was tough. I'm not ashamed to admit I accepted a rescue, not realizing what some stranger sacrificed to make that possible. Jesus! It had the potential to be rage-quit, throw your PS4 through a window frustrating, but by showing player contributed graffiti during each continue, encouraging you to keep going and don't give up ... amazing. Simply amazing. That may be the single greatest and most humbling multiplayer mechanic ever created. Ben8026, whoever you are, I owe you.

It's kinda the point that you accept the rescue and it's also pretty much the main thing that for me make that ending just so incredibly powerful and amazing. Possibly my favorite ending in any game just thanks to that mechanic. Brilliant! The C/D/E stories are top notch quality storytelling, we are lucky people getting to experience it

Automata is not a triple AAA title though. It's incredibly niche and was developed on a limited budget, if not for Yosuke Saito at Square Enix there most likely wouldn't have been a sequel to NieR. It's a bit bigger than the original game. Speaking of which, I highly recommend people play that one. If you thought Automata was great then the first NieR is even better (well except the combat).

I know that it almost didn't happen, but I'm not sure that would make it niche. If it's not AAA and it's not indie, what is it? AA? The benchmark I usually use for AAA is: * Comes from a AAA studio: Platinum Games alone would qualify for that * Has substantial 3D simulation throughout gameplay: check * Has substantial voice acting: check (in fact, substantial VA in at least two languages!) * Sells 1 million+ copies in its first month: check * Has at least 30 hours of gameplay in the SP campaign: check So if it is not AAA, there are a lot of other AAA games that aren't AAA.

AAA refers to games that have a high development budget as well as promotion. Nier has neither of that. It's a Japanese RPG series that spun-off from an even more niche franchise called Drakengard. Half the people who've played Automata didn't even know there was another Nier nevermind that it was connected to Drakengard. It has Platinum developing the gameplay this time due to Yosuke Saito at Square Enix being impressed by the original game that he wanted to help Taro develop another one, so Square handed Yoko Taro the resources necessary for making that happen. The promotion and that budget however is not on the levels of tripple A. The gameplay in terms of Platinum is very, very basic, not on the level of Bayonetta. The constant blending of genres, the usage of text dialogue are all parts of its niche DNA, the kind of things you wouldn't see in a AAA title. It appeals to a much smaller audience, currently there are no plans on story DLC due to the constrained budget. Platinum working on the gameplay was a decision that was made due to the combat not being received well for the first one, so Taro and the others handed it to people who are familiar with the action genre. That way they could retain all of the crazy Taro elements of the first game, while having a more functional combat system too. The game is beautiful on its own artistic level and the music helps complimenting that but it's not exactly stellar on a technical level like how it usually is with every AAA game. All of the enemies and NPCs generally look the same with different variants, Taro actually managed to make that work with the plot, which is nice but it still tells a lot of its limitations The boss battles were also quite straightfoward and not overly intricate like the average Platinum Game. Also when the characters converse in the game, their mouths never move outside of cutscenes. Ultimately, it's the good writing, direction, unique blending of genres and its aesthetic that makes up for it and helps make its narrow world feel memorable and expansive without being expansive. I would be lying though if I said I didn't enjoy the combat in the game, because it is still absolutely fun and you can still experiment quite a bit of it. But compared to your average higher budget action game, it's really low-key. Having substantial voice acting, 3D simulation and length doesn't constitute it being a AAA game, lots of niche games have that too. Persona, Trails in the Sky, and the Yakuza series. IN fact, Yakuza 0 is a very recent example as well as Gravity Rush and its sequel that just came out. It selling a lot is nice but that doesn't really have anything to do with it being AAA. It's got a big cult following and Square Enix did a lot better at promoting the sequel with the promise of PlatinumGames working on the gameplay. Breath of the Wild fits the description of being a AAA title.

Taro's budget for this game was pretty much sake and some peanuts, it's better then Drakengard 1/3 which was just peanuts but it;'s still a hilariously low budget.
