CutieInk @maddie_B_Artist @gideonemery @davidgaider So many people want to see Fenris in DA4 (including myself). How does that make you feel knowing how beloved the character is? :3 #TheDreadWolfRises #Fenris #DragonAge4
David Gaider @davidgaider I think it's super! And considering how susceptible a certain broody elf might be to egg-related propaganda, it's an idea completely within the realm of plausibility. 😉
Vlasta Sarka @vlasta_Sarka Oh no, now there’s suddenly the possibility that my devoted, Fenris-lovin’ Hawke will regret not being the one left to jump into the abyss. Or will she also be an agent of Fen’Harel? 😧
David Gaider @davidgaider Not working at BioWare, I have no way of knowing. But the possibilities do boggle the mind!

....wait... so the novels and comics are all pretty much unrelated and useless to understanding the world and have no effect on the games... get ASunder gave DAI a companion and explains why the conclave was even happening...and you can't understand the Orlesian War without the Masked Empire... It wasn't as much about how canonic the books or comics are (we had multiple devs explain how they tie to DA games and our world-states anyway), but how relatively unknown they are among the wider audience. It's not that surprising - a lot of these auxiliary materials are for hardcore fans. It's also hardcore fans that care about the details of the story - AFAIK, according to research done, maybe 30 or 40% of all people who play games (maybe even less for big RPGs) ever finish them, and even less care about understanding things like Orlesian War or Cole's backstory outside of what's included in the game itself. So, if the game ties story stuff with auxiliary materials, it usually isn't super-overt or super-specific (which also leaves enough space for world-state differences) to not make reading books/comics or replaying games an absolute must. I don't find the books necessary because the information in the novels is not something my character would likely know. The only book I've read so far is The Stolen Throne (which I read after playing DAO), and while it provided some cool background on Maric and Loghain, my mage Warden who had spent her whole life in the Circle Tower wouldn't have known or cared about any of it. None of the Inquisitor backgrounds would have any prior connection to Cole, so I'm perfectly fine as a player only knowing what he tells me about himself. Since none of the Inquisitors are Orlesian, I wouldn't expect my character to know the details of a foreign country's civil war. The player's goal is to end the war and solidify one person's power on the throne, and I feel like the events at the Winter Palace give you enough information to go on. You even have the opportunity to question each potential leader about their beliefs and vision for the country to help you make a more informed decision. I'm sure there's plenty of subtleties I didn't pick up on, but given that the entire quest takes place over a single evening it makes sense that the Inquisitor wouldn't have time to learn all the details. I like that the books exist, and I plan to read more of them, but I don't feel like they're necessary to enjoy/understand the games and their lore. I'm actually glad that I didn't read Stolen Throne before playing DAO because I wouldn't want to go into a game with a preconceived opinion about a character. Playing DAI actually makes me look forward to reading Asunder because I'll get to learn more about a character I've come to like in the game (which I believe is the intention behind creating such ancillary materials in the first place: buy more DA product!). They're fun enhancements to the series, but they don't drive the action, and I think that's the way they should be.

They're fun enhancements to the series, but they don't drive the action, and I think that's the way they should be. That's what I like about DA - my perception about events or characters can change depending on what I played or which books I've read and so on And each other player would have a different experience too, depending on where they began their journey. But yea, the information acquired from any sources other than the game we currently play - while canonical (at least in terms of the outline of certain events) and substantive - mostly matters to us, the players, rather than our PCs. Realistically, none of the PCs (so far) would have ever known as much about the world or certain events than we do after playing other games or reading all the books/comics. Thus, any further insight PCs have, or choice they'd make that is not based just on what surrounds them, has to be headcanoned in one way or another.

I don't find the books necessary because the information in the novels is not something my character would likely know. Leliana knows a lot of what happened in Masked Empire. Ya, the private moments like Gaspard threatening to murder Celene on the spot (in the woods on a hunt) if she doesn't agree to marry him may be known to only the two of them, but the Burning of Halamshiral is known to both Leliana and Josephine (and probably every city elf both sides of the Frostbacks). They had plenty of time to explain things, and they either completely omit, or barely mention, huge Orlesian political events. And the mass murdering events that led to the Conclave are also well known. And the fact that Tranquility can be reversed was telegraphed by crystal to literally every tower and part of the rebellion reasons should definitely be known to a human circle mage Inky. So ya, the little private personal stuff I very much agree shouldn't be known. But I'm not talking about that.

I suppose Tranquility could have been handled in a Codex entry. The Masked Empire material would have required burning a bunch of wordcount, but maybe that wouldn't have been a bad thing, since the Inquisitor seems to be going to the Winter Palace without much guidance. Still haven't read it -- what things would Leliana have thought that the Inquisitor really needed to know?

I suppose Tranquility could have been handled in a Codex entry. What's weird about this is that Cassandra's quest and the "big secret" in the book she got from the Lord Seeker is all about the Tranquil Cure. As if the magical world didn't already know about it. As a new player, ya, it's great this is in there. But I wanted the dialogue option for a human circle mage to be like, "Oh. You didn't know about that?" or something. what things would Leliana have thought that the Inquisitor really needed to know? They do tell us about Halamshiral. Via Briala's servant friend she tried to have killed for knowing about her sexual indiscretions with the Empress. "She was sleeping with the Empress who purged my alienage." So the word count was spent, but it was spent oddly, and underwhelmingly. So casually, she tacks on her alienage being purged- as if you already knew that information. Because as a person who's lived in this world, you should already know about the Massacre of the Halamshiral Alienage. And there are like 5 questions you can ask this servant where she just replies that it was only Briala that could have sent her to that room to her death ...So Leliana could have had that word count and actually give true breadth to such a huge event. It minimalizes Empress Celene's sins.

They should do like Mass Effect and have NPCs and codex entries talking about events of the books ingame.

Not sure what’s the problem then? If we read the book and gain additional insight that we then want to at least partially implant in our Inky... we can just headcanon that additional conversations with Leli or her spies had occurred. It ain’t that complicated.

There is an conversation between a Tranquil NPC and Mother Giselle where they discuss the cure for Tranquility.
There is also a side quest in the Western Approach where you find a report by the Chantry agents sent to observe Pharamond at Adamant, as well as another report by the mages who were spying on them.
