I'm actually kind of confused that I saved that picture, I must have thought it was hilarious. It's the only thing I have saved from the thread and there was A LOT of save worthy pics on there, heh. Maybe because I never thought the Prime BSN would shut down and I could alway go back and look at them again

I took a quick look at Fextralife in the appropriate places but couldn't easily find the prior Cullen threads. None of the DA2 threads have been imported yet either. Btw, given that I was gone from the net during most of the summer, I missed out on most of the discussion about moving. How did things wind up such that there two forums: bsn.boards.net and the bioware fextralife.com forums? Will bsn.boards.net ever consider importing all of the old threads? Are people scattering to the winds? Coming in at the end of it all feels rather confuddling.

I'd rather it be a set day rather than a page myself. I can remember points when the old thread was moving SO fast that if you were in a meeting for a few hours, you could easily miss it. Day of the Dead would be appropriate, but that's over 2 months away. Do we want to wait that long? Good question. It's also after the BSN goes away altogether on Oct 25. Which might make it even more appropriate. Is it too long? For me, it would take me some time to do something new, and my September is from hell with the start of the semester. What about Halloween? It could be a costume party. I'll be dressed up - as far as you all know. For real though, it will be after BSN is gone for good.

As for how it ended up with discussions in many places, the others were formed before we had a chance to decide where we wanted to go. The Cullen thread here was already a done deal, so we decided our thread would be more of a general character discussion thread. We also decided to keep Cullen in the thread title so people from BSN Prime could find us. That will change... eventually.

At least 3 different forums were created (or may have already existed in some form,) and they all encouraged people to move there. We kind of waited to see what would look best and picked one for our retirement home The Solas crowd mostly moved here, and the dwarves started Tapster's Tavern here as well, so I think that helped (well, I may have been one of the few following Tapster's .) Dunno about seeing imports from the boards here, though.

Are people scattering to the winds? Coming in at the end of it all feels rather confuddling. A number of potential solutions developed rather quickly. The three main options were: realdragonagefans -- which is a pre-existing fan forum with its own organization. There is of course already a Cullen fan thread there for those interested. fextralife -- a pre existing forum that would add in the BSN prime forums to its existing game platforms. It then also figured out how to transfer in the threads. DA:I Cullen thread was transferred already. DA2 threads are on tap. this new BSN -- a brand new forum set up by BSN fans for BSN fans and blessed by some of the Bioware devs. Most active BSN users moved here, and most active threads just moved here. For example, the Solas thread, the twitter thread. There is no current plan that I know of to transfer old materials. For us, there were some complicating factors, in that someone started a Cullen thread here already. Folks interested in talking all Cullen all the time can still go there. For us, our discussion is broader anyway, so we decided to take the opportunity to embrace that. A summary of the various projects and options underway are available here: whereisbioware.wordpress.com/

The Cullen thread here was already a done deal, so we decided our thread would be more of a general character discussion thread. We also decided to keep Cullen in the thread title so people from BSN Prime could find us. That will change... eventually. Good to hear that Fexelea is working on copying the rest of old BSN. There were quite a few gems on those threads, especially in the older threads from many years back when various devs clarified certain aspects of the lore and some of the fan-based headcanon and commentary was pretty interesting. I reference the DA wikia often enough and quite a few entries in the wikia reference quotes from devs in old BSN threads. Hahaha. Retirement home. Well, I guess that may be true now that Cullen's story arc has probably run its full course. (sadly) During the brief bit of time in early august when I had laptop+internet access, I saw a confusing flurry of action and I made a fextralife but that was at the beginning of it all. And then I remembered at the last minute that BSN was shutting down sometime in late august so I purposefully looked up the cullen thread to see if any plans had been made. I have lived through various fandom platform upheavals over the years and, for better or worse, every time people flee a platform, they always seem to scatter to a bunch of different places rather than end up in one place. Sigh...

A summary of the various projects and options underway are available here: whereisbioware.wordpress.com/Thanks for this summary! The whereisbioware blog was an interesting read. Wow. I had forgotten about all of the mods on BSN. There is a lot of stuff I need to copy over to my new (mostly naked) gaming machine just to make sure I have it -- all those various mods and tools that I had assumed would always be available because who would have thought BSN would suddenly go *POOF* into thin air?! Good thing I have two weeks of staycation starting tomorrow. While I am sad and nostalgic and a little bit grumpy about BSN shutting down, in retrospect I am not surprised. Various companies and organizations have been stepping away from hosting community comment boards, forums, and so forth. Social media, as a whole, is starting to become too much of a liability for companies and organizations thus better to push their customers, viewers/listeners, or fanbase off to generic places like twitter while telling employees to lurk without engaging (unless authorized to engage as a PR person) which allows them all to wash their hands of the apparently failed experiment of social media democratization. Although none of that erases how the Cullen 1.0 and 2.0 threads were noted by the devs as a consistently friendly, civil, social place on BSN. ...sigh...

We were an island of calm and friendship amidst a sea of filth. There were other lovely islands, too, (like the Solas thread), but I can certainly see how the BSN was a liability for the company. I wouldn't want my company name attached to vitriolic misogynistic, homophobic, racist, etc. comments. It's different if these comments are being made via an outside platform like Twitter or Reddit. But when your company is hosting the forum, you probably have legal obligations to police that forum... just guessing, obviously. Besides, I like this place already. I can say dirty words

[...stuff deleted for brevity...] Although none of that erases how the Cullen 1.0 and 2.0 threads were noted by the devs as a consistently friendly, civil, social place on BSN. ...sigh... But when your company is hosting the forum, you probably have legal obligations to police that forum... just guessing, obviously. Besides, I like this place already. I can say dirty words When I first started poking around BSN just after DA2 came out, I was surprised at how much of bare-fisted brawl the forums and then I found the older Cullen thread and breathed a sigh of relief because it was a welcoming island of calm, friendly discussion *and* I have been an hopeless Cullen fan since DA:O. I disappeared from the BSN Cullen thread in 2014 because I didn't want to overthink DAI before it came out and then once it came out I didn't want to get spoiled on things because I knew it would take me forever to find time to play it. Lol. I still haven't had time to play any of the DAI DLCs and I am now thoroughly spoiled and completely okay with that. Also, I have only brought one inquisitor to the end credits of the main game after taking a long break when my old gaming machine died and then I rushed a bit to see the end of the game after realizing I sort of forgot most of the beginning. Now I just want to bask in the sunshine of a DA island of fannish calm where no one minds that I have been a steadfast Cullen fan ever since the mage origin scenes in DAO. It is good to know that there are other lovely islands of calm, such as the Solas thread. I haven't yet gotten into the Solas aspects of fandom nor have I created an inquisitor for a Solas run yet, although I plan to.

I HIGHLY recommend it!! My Solasmance playthrough was the only time I really felt overwhelming positive towards the character. Every other time I can sense my inquisitor is wary of Solas, or finds him very arrogant, or *insert negative feeilng*. But when you romance him, well, you're in love with him. And you see him in a different light. My inquisitor admired him rather than thought him arrogant. The final Trespasser scene was also incredibly, indescribably painful. Tbh I feel bad for those who make this their canon... it's that awful (but like, a "good" kind of awful, you know, like a bittersweet end to a book or movie). Since mine was noncanon I could just pretend it never happened and fall back on a post-game fic I'd written that ends, well, not necessarily happily-ever-after, but definitely not with Solas telling you he loves you but you're just a sad little mortal so you gots to die with all the rest lol

Although, I tend to prefer my bittersweet stories with characters who are a little more humble. Given what I already know about Solas versus my personal tastes, I suspect I will always find him less than sympathetic (although, who knows?! WHO KNOWS????) but -- BUUUUT -- some of my favorite DA ships & romances are unholy disasterships. I admit to loving romances that are complete messes, especially when they are cringeworthy messes. Not sure DAI will allow me to play Solas/Inquisitor as a cringeworthy disaster but if it does I will be all over it in a very bad way. For quite a while I have been thinking about creating an alt-canon world where Merrill because the inquisitor and ends up in a disastership of personal torment with Solas. Just for that, I sort of wish the rivalmance option from DA2 was available in DAI.

I hear where you're coming from. But the thing is, playing the Solas romance really is different. The man LOVES you. Like, he can't help himself; he's head over heels. That does change things. Even if you're on the outside looking in, maybe you could imagine an inquisitor falling for him? I admit I tend to identify with my characters a lot, which I guess is why I can only romance characters I really really like. (Some I'll give the sporting try and even though I like them, it's just kinda meh and I never do it again or sometimes don't even finish the romance. Anders is the one who springs to mind first. Really really like the character but the romance just didn't tickle all my romance triggers I guess.)

Solas romance ... I knew everything about it before going through with it and I still sat there staring at the screen when I got the last romance cutscene, like "WTF?!" Had to make a new Inky and romance Cullen again to make me feel better And Trespasser doesn't make it any better either, lol. Everyone else is getting married or living happily ever after (except you know, if you screw up with IB) and there is the poor Elven Inquisitor without her Vallaslin, sobbing in the corner.

Although none of that erases how the Cullen 1.0 and 2.0 threads were noted by the devs as a consistently friendly, civil, social place on BSN. ...sigh... Yeah, the loss of the projects and mods is distressing. At least the devs have extended their shelf life on the BSN, but not indeterminately. I myself haven't backed up all the DLC and patches yet... which I'll need to do since my gaming machine just ate it big time. In terms of the forums, their closure is certainly past due. The devs themselves have shunned their own forums since before they transitioned to the most recent new platform. Hard to know what Bioware fans really will do in the interim before new games come out. I don't know if the population that transitioned here, over 1000+ users last I heard, is enough to be sustainable. I doubt it will draw in the passersby in enough numbers to replenish as it loses people. But who knows. For now, it's a place for us to land. The few of us who are left. Cullen thread v.3.0 tested us.

It doesn't matter that I sorta knew what would happen before I played it. It was epic. And tragic. And horrible. And so awesome. Man, I need to get back to that fic one of these days. I had been waiting to see what happened in Trespasser and then . . . there was that whole LACK OF CLOSURE. Then i couldn't even.

You know, this sounds like it has the potential for me to headcanon it as a trainwreck. I suspect I will try to find a way to make it a bit of a hatemance from the Inquisitor's POV, although I don't know how much the game will allow that. Well, I'll just have to wait and see what happens! Across all of my Wardens and Hawkes (plus my one completed Inquisitor and the few who are stuck wandering in the Hinterlands), I tend to only have one OC each whom I identify with at some level, although as I develop them as characters with their own motivations inside their own canon, I eventually end up thinking of them more as fictional creations and less as someone I personally identify with. Eventually they get to the point where I feel like I understand who they are and why they make the choices they make. That is when I stop identifying with them as an extension of myself and, instead, become the outsider who looks in, even if I do related to certain aspects of them and their choices. On the other hand, the rest of my Wardens and Hawkes are characters whom I have created for specific game decisions and to play other romances. For those I am very much the outsider looking in. Some of them are sympathetic characters and others are horrible, terrible, embarrassing people. For DAO and DA2 I identified most with the first characters I played before distancing myself from them by fictionalizing them as individuals. My reaction to DAI was different. I actually did not identify at all with my first Inquisitor (a fem!trevelyan). Instead, I immediately jumped into that sense of being an outsider looking in as I watched her and Cullen fall for each other while trying to put the world back together. Not sure why that happened but it did. I have no idea how I will really feel about the Solasmance until I play it -- which I really want to do soon -- but I am comfortable taking the role of the outsider who is creating a story within the game's parameters so, *shrug*, I guess I just have to wait and see what happens. Although the thought of Solas being head over heels over the inquisitor makes me EvilGrin with trainwrecky ideas. Double that if it is an alt-canon Inquisitor Merrill who is filled with mixed emotions and ends up questioning everything she has ever believed. (p.s. I love Merrill) OMG. Now I really need to play a Solasmance to find out what happens. hahahhahaha. I think I am starting to see the appeal it has, even though I'm likely to turn up the volume on the trainwreck aspects!

Cullen thread v.3.0 tested us. Your gaming machine ate it too? Gah. Sorry. It seems we have been in the same boat. My old gaming machine had a huge library of mods for DAO and DA2, plus the toolkit, various tools for editing saves and modding files, all of the DLCs (obviously), a million and one different save games, etc. And then it died and my life became far too busy, nearly a year passed, and my new gaming machine currently has nothing more than the vanilla games, no mods, no tools, none of my old saves. Just my inquisitors, mostly half-played. At least I have backups of most of my old DA folders but I haven't yet installed them on the new machine (lol, lazy me). I should take time to find old things now and make copies of mods and tools I might later want. It really was pure luck that I saw a post on tumblr about BSN shutting down because I only check a handful of blogs on tumblr by phone (I swear it was yours where I saw the info -- THANKS!!) and I have been gone most of this summer. Cullen 3.0 on tumblr was more than I could handle so I mentally zoned out. If the Cullen 3.0 thread on BSN tested some of you, I can understand why a peaceful retirement home thread like this one is what the Old Guard needs. As for me, I took a half-hearted vacation from DA fandom so I could just quietly play DAI on my own terms because it took me f.o.r.e.v.e.r to finish the game (and I still haven't purchased the DLCs but will do so soon). Time has been a precious commodity these days. That said, I want to get back to having my daily dosage of silly DA gifs and thoughts on fanfic projects just so I can have some relaxing fun in my day-to-day life. My life needs more relaxing low-stress fun.

Just what I had in mind for this new incarnation of the thread. So it's hopefully a good evolution for the Old Guard, here in the Old Guard.
