I really think the writers vastly underestimate how much romances matter to players. Or maybe they do know and for whatever reason choose to ignore it. I'm not saying they're wrong for doing so; it's just something I've noticed.
If they didn't expect Harding to be so popular, then why make it possible to have a drink with her (or not, as the case may be lol). There is a huge pink heart dialogue there almost every time you talk to her. Were they maybe having a chuckle at players' expense, assuming we'd think we were pursuing a "real" romance? But then nothing would happen if that were true. They DID include a "conclusion" to the "romance" by having her ask you out. So you think... perhaps they did take the possibility seriously. But then Trespasser comes along and it's a joke again.
I just... I don't get them sometimes lol

Huh. I did not know that! Hmmm... honestly, that sounds to me like they're keeping her options open for the future. That could be good news...? Maybe? Yep. You can hear the line about sharing a drink in this at about 4:20 HardingAnd you can hear Vivienne's conversation here (the player replayed this for both options) VivienneI really am hoping they're bringing her back in the future as an LI. Because the only alternate reason I can think of for that conversation was to rub salt into the wounds... Oh wow! I didn't know there was so much and that it was so explicit! I figured they were faux heart options, like when you try to flirt with Aveline.

I am puzzled about Harding now tho. It kinda felt like we were being bludgeoned over the head with the expectation that we should love her, the way the devs talked about her, and how they gave her all that extra dialogue in JoH. But then... they leave the IQ hanging like that. Hmmm. Definitely mixed signals.

And you can only get that end conversation or the one with Vivienne if you haven't romanced anyone else (and obviously, a number of people have skipped all the others to get it.) That's why Harding's my default "romance" for my dwarves, even though she doesn't have an official tile in the Keep.

On the other hand... they wrote EIGHT romances. They are probably shocked that there are so many people who still didn't like what they were given lol (Of course I always argue that if the romances hadn't been so gated more people would be happier. And still no dwarf romance? I think someone like Blackwall could've easily given way to Harding. And I like Blackwall. Would've happily jumped his bones if given the opportunity. But seriously.)

Yeah..gated romances. I understand what they were trying to do and respect it. But....hmm. I didn't know you could kind of have a drink with Harding. It's good to see other pt Solas reactions to the vallaslin thing. And I know I spell that wrong every time. I only did it once and that was take away. I did not try the dwarf pt until later and it's one of my favorite Inquisitors. Idk why but I just love her. I usually had Varric in my dwarf pt's. It helped with the height thing..except for those examples provided by Tishina. I loved the city elf origin in DAO. Although even then one of my favs was the dwarf noble origin. Oh,Gorim...

I didn't try all the dialogue -- though the first time I picked an option that was more aggressive than I thought it would be and... that didn't end well. So I had to replay it the way I meant to, haha. I'll have to try that scene again and let him remove the tattoos so I can see what Solas feels I missed. And I'm glad someone else likes Sebastian. ;] Poor guy doesn't even have a fan thread here... yet. I like his character and wanted to do his romance but it... I can't. I'm completely incapable of killing Anders. Gah, why do you do these things BioWare? And why do I like that you do these things? But I was wondering about the MoA banter with Bethany -- I thought she says that about sister-Hawke even if there is no romance? What's the banter if Hawke isn't with Sebastian? Hmm, yeah, Sebastian wasn't really a DA:I character, so I wouldn't expect one around here. I honestly haven't gone into the DA2 threads yet. Yeah..gated romances. I understand what they were trying to do and respect it. But....hmm. Yeah, after my (literally) years of griping, that's about where I am right now. Hmm. On the one hand, thanks to gating, we had a character like Dorian, which most people would consider a plus. On the other hand, want to experience the romance of POSSIBLY THE MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTER IN THE FRANCHISE but don't want to play a female elf? Sorry. lol I just hope the story of DA4 is interesting. I found DAI way lacking in that regard It started off so thrilling then petered off into hours upon hours upon hours of trudging through the desert / forest / plains.

And still no dwarf romance? I think someone like Blackwall could've easily given way to Harding. And I like Blackwall. Would've happily jumped his bones if given the opportunity. But seriously.) Blackwall was originally supposed to be a dwarf. But when they put Varric in the game, they decided 2 dwarves out of 9 companions was too many Several of the romances had extremely narrow appeal or were gated. I like several of the options for male players, and I like Solas and Cullen. Sadly, none of those were available, offically, to a female dwarf. Blackwall particularly chaps me because dwarven women have two male choices, and IB is obviously a rather narrow niche romance, but they put a lot of extra time into getting the animations right for that one instead of Blackwall. Blackwall's my type (even his voice is lovely,) he starts off wonderfully (very gallant and courtly in his flirts,) and once I got past the lying issue, I could probably have enjoyed the romance. But I hated being forced to make a decision on the romance in front of the entire court at Skyhold, the romance still feels very incomplete, even truncated because it stops there, and the animations are so poorly done for dwarves (and almost as bad for qunari,) they make me want to scream. I haven't been able to bring myself to touch my dwarf x Blackwall pt since April 2015, I just can't do it. Even the Trespasser romance segment for Blackwall wouldn't sweeten it for me because I hated the animations in the loft part of the romance so much (levitating boobs ahoy!) that I reloaded and played the alternative where he leaves from the tavern instead. His Trespasser bit loses most of its meaning if you didn't wake up in the loft alone. Ironically, I loved all 4 of the DAO romances, though I guess my favorites, Zevran and Morrigan, are less popular than Alistair and Leliana?

Sigh* I think I found where I belong..now i just need a mash up thread with Alistair/Anders/Cullen and I will be in heaven...just sayin. Found this and, well, sharing. DeviantArt sourceThese 3 are my hubbies too. Funny how my favorite LIs all happen to be blond, amber-eyed and originate from the same game. I mean, that really wasn't on purpose.

City elf, dwarf commoner, then dwarf noble for me I thought the CE and DC had some amazing layers to them, ones they don't seem to be interested in doing much more with, though, other than Carta stuff. I fell in love with the dwarves with my first PT, but there's something about the CE origin, and the tight-knit community and family despite everything... Yes, I've known about the Harding almost-romance since right after the game launched. A lot of us were hopeful since some of the devs seemed really enthusiastic about her that we might see more, but in my pessimistic moments, I feel like they wrote that off with JoH and the professor. And with Trespasser, you find out that the invitation to have a drink was a tease by the devs since you obviously never do. There are a lot of conversations between a dwarf and Cullen where the camera is either pointing completely over her head or you have furniture in the way

Of course, one of the running jokes is that I haven't played DA2 for various reasons (I actually own it at this point, just lack of time) and R2sMuse and a couple of people kept trying to convince me to play it specifically to romance Sebastien who I didn't really think was my type as much as either Isabella or possibly Fenris (I'm really not pro-Chantry.) Then I saw a gif of Seb bowing to Hawke's mabari and instantly fell in love. I mean, I think everyone knows mabari are the way to my heart

It was turbulent. And full of feels for me. I had to set the controller down away from me in the last part...lest my finger twitch a choice.

I remember the city elf one and trying to come up with a story of elven heroes for those children that never heard a story with elves as the heroes. And Shiani. I loved coming back to the alienage just to see her and have a couple bottles of wine with her. And ofc, they talked shite about my city elf's nose. "It's just like her father's nose..." What? What's wrong with my nose?

I thought you were wary of DA2 because you have to play human. I played it before I'd ever experienced the joy of getting to be gloriously elfy in a game I bet now if I tried to play it after playing the likes of DAO, DAI, Skyrim, etc. I'd be really averse to trying it. All about perspective, i guess. Probably the one bad thing about DA2 is that it's not very hard. DAI is definitely more of a challenge and that is probably the only reason I'm willing to give it a third go. (Even though I've paused and returned to Dragon's Dogma yet again >.>)

The first time the Chantry blew up, I literally picked my jaw up off the floor. I always figured the emotional impact of also romancing the guy who did it would have been greater without any fore knowledge. It was hard to conjure up the same shock the second time around. But then . . . my problem with DA2's romances was that I was so careful about getting everything the way I wanted it that inevitably half way through any playthrough with LI A would be pining for LI B. Then next PT I'd move on to LI B and start pining for LI C. I could never love the one I was with! LOL

I did bring Seb and Bethany along during Legacy once though. --For which I also saw the Seb-marriage (to sarcastic Hawke) banter with Carver/Bethany. Pretty amusing. LOL Yeah, the chaste marriage banter in the DLC is pretty hilarious. Almost enough to want to choose that path. Almost. I wish they'd spent as much creativity on the rivalmance path. Its lack kinda made me feel like I'd picked the "wrong" choice, and I was a bad person for wanting Seb to regain his throne and become prince. That's one of the things that made a Seb-romance import for DA:I so satisfying. That at least it acknowledged my choice as an actual choice. :lalalalala puts fingers in ears over the Annexing Kirkwall quest: If Anders died and you ended DA2 still romancing Seb, then Seb's story in DA:I is far more logical. He's a chantry envoy and has become Prince of Starkhaven, even though he's still having some trouble with the usurpers. He HELPS Kirkwall instead of trying to take it over. I mean, the threats he makes if you spare Anders make a lot of sense as the grief of a passionate man pushed to the edge by the death of his mentor (and hundreds of innocents). But actually invading Kirkwall made no sense then, nor does it make sense now. sigh.

Then I saw a gif of Seb bowing to Hawke's mabari and instantly fell in love. I mean, I think everyone knows mabari are the way to my heart LOL Well, my love for Sebastian knows no bounds, but you may very well click with one of the others more. The only thing to be wary of, when you get around to it, is that you can't actually start any of the other romances if you want to close the deal with Sebastian. The original gameguide said you couldn't even flirt with anyone else, but that's been proven false. But you can't kiss anyone else. Artemis is right, tho, that many of the LIs have such a small scene with the mabari at some point. Aaaaand, if you're having an angry day, you can read one of the dev's defenses for why Varric isn't romanceable in DA2. A very interesting (and in my humble writer's opinion, compelling) series of posts and exchanges about what makes a good romance story (and a good romance story specifically for a Bioware game), that I think about a lot when I see how the writers violated these very same principles when it comes to the DA:I romances and their total lack of 'will they? won't they' drama. ...which reminds me... time to start backing up the dev threads I have bookmarked!!

I mean, that really wasn't on purpose.OMG, I met a student yesterday who looks (or at least his ID card picture) like Anders. It keeps catching my eye for that reason everytime I look at the page. And, of course, since it's real life, I have no one to share this knowledge with. LOL He's even wearing some kind of shirt/jacket that has a standing up collar that looks like Ander's coat. edit: more specifically, i guess i was picturing this fanart by pheberoni.tumblr.com and the kid looked like anders in a mug shot. lol

I mean, I think everyone knows mabari are the way to my heart Fenris though... he so pulls at your heartstrings All the companions have chats with the mabari; I think it does drills with Aveline's soldiers lol I think the only one who doesn't like it is Anders (he's a cat person... silly, you can love both!) I thought you were wary of DA2 because you have to play human. (Even though I've paused and returned to Dragon's Dogma yet again >.>) Well, the single race, human only part of it is definitely very off-putting for me. I'm definitely a fan of nonhuman races in most games. For me to play a human, the background has to be something unusual that I'm interested in. I'd never have gotten DA2 if it hadn't been on sale and really cheap. But R2 and a couple of others partly won me over, and partly I feel like I can write some of my fanfic better if I've played it in person.

Haha! I saw some random guy on the street recently that looked like Dorian so much I stopped short to stare. It's so weird when that happens and a bit disconcerting. You gotta wonder if your student has ever played DA2 and understands the resemblance. Give you a dollar if you mention it to him and report back to us on his reaction.

My first pt of DA2 I romanced Anders. It was turbulent. And full of feels for me. I had to set the controller down away from me in the last part...lest my finger twitch a choice. Fenris was my first. So, so much squealing from me I should have been ashamed. I saved right before every romance scene and replayed them again and again and again... And this was with my slightly fugly Hawke before I knew how to make really handsome ones haha Anders was my first DA2 romance but it was a bit of an accident. I mean, I truly thought we were in the flirting phase and before I knew what happened he was crashing at my place! And I remember right after the shag scene, he left the room and I got a little notice at the bottom that said I just lost 1 silver! WTF dude?! Suddenly I'm his sugar mama! Anyway, I ran through all available LI's... for science... and found I enjoyed Isabela's the most because she didn't complain as much as the others. Sorry boys. you're cute and all but I have things to do and no time to babysit your emotions. There's your window into my psyche.

Honestly, they'll have a hard time convincing me that the two main problems with any dwarven romance is that they haven't had anyone who enjoyed getting into dwarven culture and dwarves since DAO enough to write it, and animating it is more work to do right. I also have a theory that the animators really hate the idea of animating a shorter man kissing a taller woman, but that just may be my experience with half a dozen games where tall women shrink Fenris was my first. So, so much squealing from me I should have been ashamed. I saved right before every romance scene and replayed them again and again and again... And this was with my slightly fugly Hawke before I knew how to make really handsome ones haha Anders was my first DA2 romance but it was a bit of an accident. Sorry boys. you're cute and all but I have things to do and no time to babysit your emotions. There's your window into my psyche. I didn't know Anders started soaking you immediately, too funny! I've never been able to get past the change in VAs and in personalities between DAA and DA2 for Anders, and some of his dialogue is just a bit over the top. But I really liked Isabela. She's confident, self-sufficient, deadly, complicated, and surprisingly kind. I really like Fenris too as a potential LI, I'm just not entirely comfortable with how they dealt with a couple of things, particularly the issue of slavery.
