It feels like an arbitrary restraint on PC. I can understand on consoles it's the only way to keep the flow of combat going without having to pause for abilities That's not entirely true - console (and/or PC w/ controller) users always had access to 3 powers (plus 1 each for squadmates) without needing to pull up the power wheel (which pauses the game). So - we've exchanged 3 hotbuttoned powers for the player character plus 1 each for squadmates for: 3 hotbuttoned powers for the player plus jump jets. In other words:

I'm confident that there's a solution to keep the current system, while opening it up some more and keeping it balanced. I thought the suggestion of giving changing profiles a cooldown instead of the abilities when a profile is switched to be the best solution. That would allow you to set up profiles for varying situations and actually use them when the situation arises without allowing you to just spam a dozen powers non-stop by switching profiles. I think that's a pretty solid idea. I would still prefer to have a fourth skill regardless though.

I actually don't mind the whole three skills thing, though before launch I was concerned about. I've found that the only skils I really need as a Biotic is, throw overload and my pet VI. Myself and this little guy can take out anything with our combo's. Plus because powers cooldown individually, I can just swap and change at anytime during a battle.

I think the main problem is that, even if the profile/favorites switching system was more practical (i.e. enough skill points to spread across tons of abilities) I don't think many would use it. I mean, maybe you want to switch from a soldier build to a more vanguard oriented build between fights just for kicks, but has there been any encounter in this game where you thought "man, that fight would've been so much easier if I was just X class vs Y class? I don't think so. Most abilities are just as fine and useful as others. Biotics destroy enemies. Tech destroys enemies. Guns destroy enemies. And if you happen to put point into an ability you truly think isn't useful, you're probably just gonna respec if you need to. I don't too much mind having only 3 abilities at a time since I think the open nature of the combat makes everything more fast paced. You don't have to pause and examine the situation. You just go. And that's fine with me, but it just makes the profile switching system useless. I tend to favor vanguard profile when taking on kett and the sentinel profile when taking on remnant.

Is it weird that I have never switched profiles? I'm currently on my 3rd play through (hardcore, insanity, insanity). First I was adept, then vanguard, and currently infiltrator. During each game, I stayed within my profile and used only 3 lonely powers. Admittingly, I'm an oldschool gamer, but I find the whole profile thing clunky and immersion-breaking. While I do like the freedom to pick any power from any class, they should just go back to specific classes, for RPG sake.

Am I the only one that doesn't use profiles? It's a waste of time and it's SO horribly inconvenient to set up. You can't pick your 4 profiles at the same time no, you have to go back and pick 3 skills and then go back, insert it and start again...?? Ridiculous! Nah I'm good with 3 but I do miss 8 skills damn those were the days lol. It's just not necessary, like who actually *needs* to switch profiles, ever? And why separate it into 4s when it can just be 8 slots? And it takes the whole meaning of classes away.

I miss the Power Wheel and being able to tell squadmates to use which power at whatever given time suits me. I used to put some thought into who I should bring with me knowing I could use their Powers anytime I wanted, such as Tali for her Overload and Mordin for his Incinerate, coupled with my Cryo Blast, Pull, and Throw we would rape. Now I just bring Drack because he's an absolute monster/tank and just switch between the other five whenever.

I now doing my first ... ok technically second (aborted first when tried switching with four profiles) playthrough. Now I will only use two profiles and keep them of same class build ... there added a lot of replayability back.

If you want to talk restrictive skill sets, revisit ME2, ME-A is heaven in comparison. The thing that really annoys me about the combat system: there is a huge crafting system and I'm not allowed to use it to loadout my Squadmates. Having to allocate skill points into skills I'm never going to use to bolster my passives exacerbates my frustration.

Five powers totally, hot-keyed to the gamepad + the power wheel providing the access to ALL of them (Shep + Squad). The reason why DA:I had it was because the combat was different. You don't have to aim in DA:I + you can lock on targets. That means that your right thumb is free to use A, B, X, Y buttons freely. ME:A requires you to aim with right thumb, so you need to have abilities on buttons that are easily accessible - bumpers and triggers. DAI had free-aim (but it did have an option to lock on targets). We still need to use the jetpck in combat, so our right thumb has some non-aiming functions too. Adding a modificator\toggle (e.g. to the trigger or to the stick button) would've doubled the number of skills hotkeyed to RB + LB. My point is that gamepads or consoles are not responsible for 3-skills-set, combat\UI designers are.

I would like the post-switch cooldowns to be a little faster, but otherwise all good.

And I agree - there is always a way to do it, they could switch the controls completely and make better use of the buttons. Yeah, it's unfortunately design choice, one of many that I really don't like.

Just though of this: What could very easily be implemented in the game is a fusion mod which reduces (or deletes) profile switching cooldowns (but maybe increases standard recharge times?).
