I had a huge crush on Dirk Benedict.
Funny you say that because literally the only thing I remember from the original BSG is Starbuck trying to have a date with two women at the same time, and he kept having to excuse himself from one to go see the other.
What do you mean the show was about robots trying to kill off humanity?

OMFG no. I hate disco. I strongly dislike the 70s. I'm just glad I was young in that era and don't have many memories of it.

I'm slowly getting over the 80's, but there's still a lot about that decade that makes me twitch. I'm also glad I don't have many pop culture memories from the 70's.

Did anyone see the movie Sing Street? A wonderful feel-good treat for anyone who was a kid/teenager on the 80s... (and plenty of other people, I'm sure.)
Such a wonderfully-observed soundtrack, and an all-round uplifting movie.

One of the best things about the 80's is reality programming wasn't around...another is I was made aware of the band Def Leppard...and back then guys wore those snug fitting jeans that kept my attention as I walked down my highschool halls behind them. I wept for the teenage girls of the ninties, they missed a lot during the baggy pants, grung days...they really did.

There was this really tall girl and when I went over to her place to gaze a bit at her and borrow a Pink Floyd record I met her sister. And she was even a bit older. Tall as well. Clad in leather. Black leather. That sound when she moved! I watched her swing her leg over that Moto Guzzi she drove. And the sound of that motorbike! Those legs, much long, such wow, so cool. I listened to that Pink Floy record all day dreaming of the leather girl.

Anyone find it strange that cursive writing is fading out in schools? My daughter's teacher told us it was because people only use cursive for their signatures, so no sense using school time to teach penmanship when they're going to be typing 99% of the time. I had to spend a lot of time in elementary school practicing cursive but never use it. My mother's generation still uses it and it's funny her writing and my mother-in-law's look almost the same. Very textbook cursive.

I listened to that Pink Floy record all day dreaming of the leather girl. She sounds like my kinda girl - we could have discussed the respective merits of the vibrations from Italian v-twins versus British in-line triples. Oh no, wait, that's what biker dudes do with other biker dudes. We just tend to drool a bit round girls like her. 'One of these days' from Meddle is a great song to listen to while dreaming of bikes and girls - it's exciting and scary. As a left-hander, in some ways I welcome the news that cursive writing is being consigned to history. Overall it is sad of course, but for those of us who were repeatedly ridiculed for our inability to write quickly, or without smudging the ink or the chalk, it's like a big giant happy relieved FUCK OFF to the rest of the right-handed world, and a step towards equality.

Is there another one here who watched the first moon landing on TV as a child? Generally, the good old times weren't so good, but there was a spirit of exploration at that time I'm very much missing today. To think it's more than 40 years later and we haven't been on Mars yet...

I guess it has that lost art feel to it, though it never made sense to me back then that it was considered a faster form of writing.

I still have a small "writer's bump" from clutching my pencil too hard, and a tiny callus on my little finger where it used to rub against the paper. Many students don't even know what a writer's bump is. I got this image off the interwebz for those youngsters in the thread. And back to the 80's: I'm sad no one gets this joke anymore, although I was born after JFK died.

I did watch the subsequent Apollo missions with interest as a kid and I do recall being super excited one day when my Tang container came with a plastic replica of the Moon buggy the Apollo 11 crew had, complete with plastic astronaut. Ah thanks to the internet there is an image of it. Wish I had known then that this would be "rare."

We had special lessons in astronomy because of the occasion, and I absorbed everything astronomical like a sponge. The passion never left me in all the time since. It was probably the most defining event of my life. We were in the US at the time, too, and I tried to convince my parents to drive over to Cape Canaveral. I said 800 miles wasn't really all that far

Guys in leather pants, not so much, but the leather jackets were really nice. I had a pig skin leather jacket with gold zippers I loved sooo much...I could've done without the spandex though...it was just....no. (sorry big hair band members, the hair was great, but snug jeans were better than spandex.)
