I've loved this game forever! I still have fond memories of trying to play through the first game with everyone naked, because I was a stupid child and assumed that THAC0 going down was a bad thing. I haven't played it in a year or 2, which means I need to play it again. It's just hard to justify buying the EE when I already have at least 3 copies of the entire thing and have no money...

I have the EE, it's pretty neat, but it wasn't necessary... I mainly wanted to try Siege of Dragonspear.

Loved the original versions. Too bad Beamdog shat all over them, though. Out of curiosity what is it about the EE that people don't like that they did over the originals? What Babar said mostly, cannot mod as patching overrides everything. Also, why can't they make something that looks and plays like Pillars of Eternity. They promised one thing but instead of keeping their promise it turned out to be an ugly mess. Still playable but normal modern resolutions are not supported like they should. Also, lol-level cap is still there. I played the original game so much when it came out that the new content they put in there seems to be .... insufficient IMO. So, not much improvement on graphics, lots of bugs and glitches, constant remaking of something unimportant, lack of new content. Overall, not worth it totally, I regret I bought it ( on sale, it were $10) and spent some time trying to make it work. And they even have not fixed the Beregost bug normally.

You just have to finish your modded playthroughs before they patch it again since you pretty much have to do a clean install and then reinstall your mods after a patch, and any old saves will then be super wonky with dialogues being all over the place etc so you have to start a new game for everything to work properly again. I think there's a patch coming soon-ish for both BGEE and BG2EE but don't quote me on that, ideally it should then be several months before the next one. It's really more of a fault with Steam since they're the ones who force updates either automatically or when you next launch a game, there's no option to update when you see fit and keep playing the previous version if you want. I think the GOG version might let you manually choose whether or not to download any patches?

For anybody interested in going deeper into game design that any sane individual probably should, here's part 1 of an extremely in-depth look at Durlag's Tower and the design philosophies behind it(They're doing 1 video per day every day this week).
Extra Credits in general isn't a bad watch, as long as they're not getting preachy about social issues(thankfully these episodes have focused purely on game design).

I've played Both BG games, but I have never beaten the Expansion packs Tales of the Sword Coast, Throne of Bhaal). Defeated BG1 all of 1 time, Don't even remember if I ever beat 2, but I did get to the final area.
Only Mod I used way back when was TUTU. Anyone know where that is and if it works on the EE edition?
Oh, and I was playing a female Elf Fighter/Wizard. Yes, she romanced Anomen (took me a bit to realise she also slept with him, as I distincly remember just clicking thru too fast, and not reading the in-game text. I found out about it thru a walkthru).

Only Mod I used way back when was TUTU. Anyone know where that is and if it works on the EE edition? It doesn't, because the BG1 Enhanced Edition basically is TuTu with some extra companions and other improvements. It would be completely redundant.

Right before the summer I have finished my definite BG1 + BG2 + TOB playtrough. In the past I had already played each game more than once but always with different characters so after many years I wanted to bring an hero from Candlekeep to the Throne of Baal (even if the "export" from BG1 to BG2 is just an ideal one and it's not really happening)
I don't care about EE since I have always considered them unnecessary. I am a bit sorry for Siege of Dragonspear, which I would have tried if I had not to buy again a game that I already have.

I've been watching the Extra Credits video, pretty interesting.. I think BG1 in general had lots of neat and unique encounters, clearly a lot of effort put into it.

I've played through BG1, BG2 and Throne of Bhaal countless times. Now with the EE I could use even more classes than previously available. It's still fun. I opted out of the v2.x series of patches though. I don't like the changed UI etc... so I switched to the beta channel which gave me v1.3 for both games. That works perfectly, there are no bugs I can see and it's the game I want.

BG and BG2 are among my alltime favorites. I have BG2 installed again at the moment. I really want to try the Haer'Dalis romance. BG1 I always play with TUTU and romanced Coran and Xan so far - both were pretty funny. I'm not that interested in the EEs, since the mod community is still very active and there are so many great mods for the original versions. Unfinished Business is another favorite with some great side quests. Normally I play as bards, thieves or druids, my favorite classes. And Anomen always gets the boot pretty soon, I hate that guy, I can't believe, that BW only left us girls with him as a choice. Thank the gods for mods. I tried a few of them, the Xan and Kivan mods for DA2 were pretty good.

I really like the Kivan mod for BG2. I kept his wife alive once and hated her so much that she never got revived after that. That meant I got the Kivan romance content even if I was actually romancing someone else, but that was better than him dying to be with whatsherface. Xan bonded path made me cry so hard. I heard it's been changed to avoid that now though? Ugh, so much crazy over pixel men.

I started up another playthrough using the BG Trilogy mod so I can play through everything in one go within the BG2 engine.
It always amuses me when I set the graphical settings to max on older games and I get a warning that says "These are cutting edge graphics that require a top of the line computer".
Playing a character based on a pen and paper character of mine. Chaotic Neutral Female Elven Wild Mage.

Out of curiosity what is it about the EE that people don't like that they did over the originals? Beamdog did nothing wrong. The EE versions are great. The only thing that bothers me is the fact that since I've got the Steam version, I can't choose to play an "outdated" version if a patch has been released. It's either "download the patch as soon as it becomes available" or "download and install the patch when you launch the game". Which wouldn't be an issue otherwise but since I use mods it pretty much breaks your saves whenever they release a patch, so it's either vanilla or hoping to finish a playthrough before they put out an update. They changed the menus, character screen and all that. They changed the sprites into some cartoony pieces of crap that looks terrible. The characters look like cartoon figures glued onto the non-cartoony background of the games now. The added some horrible Advanced A.I stuff as default. Which means as soon as you recruit a spellcaster NPC, or something like that, the character wastes a spell right away. Casting bark skin on himself or whatever. Which, in some cases, forces you to rest. This is a problem because some of the quests have time limits. If you forget to manually turn off the Advanced AI, you run the risk of having your spellcaster toss a fireball at a single goblin\your own party and fun things like that. The expansion pack screws up the whole story. 1. Irenicus tries to frame you for murder. If he succeeds the PC will get executed. If that happens....uhm....Irenicus loses. He wants your soul. If you die your soul goes away. Hence why he doesn't try to kill you in BG2 until after he has your soul. Basically this clever bit of writing by Amber Scott managed to turn one of the best villains in gaming history into a moron. 2. Viconia being in the expansion. She clearly states she has spent the months between BG1 and 2 living on a farm near Beregost. Her showing up in the expansion pack contradicts this. There just isn't any time left for her to have lived on that farm. 3. Irenicus giving you those dreams in the expansion pack. The writer claimed it was because he does this in BG2 as well. No he don't. That isn't Irenicus in your dreams, it is the Bhaal essence trying to convince the player to go with the taint. Irenicus himself says he knows nothing about those dreams if you ask him about them in BG2. 4. Safana having a personality change because her being a classic femme fatale character was "a poor representation of women". Yet she goes back to her original personality when you run into her in BG2. 5. Extremely railroaded plot. If you actually kill Dynaheir in the game, she shows up in the next area. All alive and well and ready to join you again happily. Despite her corpse still laying on the ground in the previous screen. 6. Some poorly done forced feminism stuffed into the game. A character walks up to you, and if you are female he yells "Hello wench" or something like that. You get 5 or 6 options for replies to him and all of them are "Get offended". You can't wave the comment away. You can't ignore it. You can't say something clever to turn tables on him. You just get five simmilar options of getting offended. That is just poor writing for an rpg. Very poor. The writer takes control of your character. Wench wasn't even a bad word in medieval times. It was a profession. In addition to all this, Beamdog has made it impossible to buy the original versions of the game. They pulled a slimey move and had the originals added as "extras" to their own game. So if you want the original games now you can only get them if you pay for the buggy remakes. That is on EA level of messed up. So, yes. Beamdog shat all over Baldur's Gate and they managed to do harm to the overall story and the characters in the process.

As I said earlier... Steam, right click BG1/2 > Properties > Betas > choose bgee_1.3- and let it patch. Then start the game and enjoy classic BG1/2 (well, you still get the 4 new NPCs etc) which you can mod without fearing an update.

Because the damage as far as saves are concerned would already be done at that point in modded playthroughs.

I was just wondering if Steam would automatically download any updates regardless and assume the player would then switch back to the "beta" themselves, since I doubt their update system would ever take into account stuff like someone wanting to play a modded BG. But if it works like that and it stays at whatever previous version you pick until you opt out of the supposed beta, then great! I'm not at home now but I at least think I remember there being more options than 1.3 to choose from there, and I really just want the option to take as much time as I want to complete a playthrough, reverting back to 1.3 specifically isn't a big deal for me. I assume the expansion won't work though if you revert to 1.3 in BG1

So you get the Black Pits, the 4 NPCs and of course Sword Coast etc. It's the BG of old made better and adapted to run on newer computers. No bugs as far as I can tell, at least nothing game breaking. You have all the classes, all spells etc.

Then start the game and enjoy classic BG1/2 (well, you still get the 4 new NPCs etc) which you can mod without fearing an update. Only possible if you have the game on Steam. If you bought it at the Beamdog store or GoG, you can only get the 2.3(?) version.

Does anyone know if you can mod BGEE and BG2EE with the mods made for the original? The posts about appear to suggest you can, but I don't quite understand what it was about.
I have the games on Steam.

Does anyone know if you can mod BGEE and BG2EE with the mods made for the original? It depends on the mod - not all of them have updated versions, but a lot do. There's a well-maintained list of mods that are compatible with the new editions on BeamDog's forums.

I have BG2 for PC but have never played it. Well, I started to a couple times but then always got busy or had newer games I wanted to play more. Now I may actually have the time. My main question is...will it feel too old/outdated to play after all these years for someone who never played and doesn't have the nostalgia factor? I also haven't played the original, so should I play that first (I don't own it)?
