Just got nincamanced like crazy by Glint in SOD. Not five minutes have passed since I had a serious relationship talk with Corwin with everyone in the party also present, and suddenly this guy who I have never displayed anything other than platonic friendship towards is watching me sleep and demanding that I don't let my eyes wander over anyone but him. I'd consider even booting him out of my party due to how uncomfortable and kinda creepy this got if that didn't leave me without both a thief and a cleric. luketrevelyan it's probably very much a YMMV situation, but speaking as someone who was also very late to the BG party: I didn't feel it was outdated at all when I first played it and didn't have the nostalgia goggles of having originally played it 16 years ago. In fact, there's a ton of stuff that is far deeper and I feel outclasses modern games (the variety in class/kit selection and how unique they are from each other, the spell system and sheer amount of spells available...) As for BG1, I don't think it's mandatory. The story and characters in an unmodded BG1 is still so basic that you can get by with just jumping into BG2 or maybe reading some summary of BG1 beforehand. I suppose it does give you time to get attached to characters that'll show up and be important in BG2, but they really don't have all that much to say in BG1 so it's really just mostly due to literally spending a lot of time with the same characters in the party, not so much that their stories are compelling or very involved at all. At least that's how it was for me. But come BG2 the characters have a lot to say, there's plenty of banter, they have their own quests etc.

I have BG2 for PC but have never played it. Well, I started to a couple times but then always got busy or had newer games I wanted to play more. Now I may actually have the time. My main question is...will it feel too old/outdated to play after all these years for someone who never played and doesn't have the nostalgia factor? I also haven't played the original, so should I play that first (I don't own it)?
Can't really disagree with anything Babar Guy says, but for me, I always like to start at the beginning of the story rather than in the middle. If you had LOTR sitting on your desk and you'd never read any of it, would you start with Two Towers or with Fellowship of the Ring? I would say if you can pick it up for cheap, get it. Unless you already know the story and the plot reveals, in which case it might not be worth the time it takes to play.
Difficulty scales with your character level in BG2, so if you start with a brand new level 1 character, it shouldn't be too hard. But it's kind of fun "importing" a character from BG1 because you have actual history with the people you start out the game with in BG2. For either game, be prepared for a lot of reading - the dialogues are all text!

Thanks for the replies! I decided to jump right into BG2 and loving it so far. It is a bit of an adjustment to all-text dialogues after playing more recent games, but I don't mind.

Baldur's Gate is, by far, my favorite game in the world. Baldur's Gate II is a perfect game for me, to this day there is no one better. Played it the most, too.
For those who are unfamiliar - there is a HUGE modding community for BG TO THIS DAY! And there are some fairly impressive mods out there.
Personally, I enjoy installing the "Big World Project" - it's a mod that connects both games with a lot of added content (you get to choose how much added content you want), upgrades BG to BGII graphics and stuff like that.
But be warned - it makes the game A LOT longer than it was!
If you don't want to deal with all of it, at least install "Unfinished Business" - a mod that adds a lot of content that was designed for the game but removed because it wasn't finished before the release deadline.
Also a lot of character mods and such.
I also hear there were attempts to replicate the game in the DA:O engine.

I was ninjamanced by Glint, Safana, and Neera while I was trying to romance Corwin! Heck I suspect the only reason I can't add Dorn and Viconia was I wasn't running an evil group But then it wouldn't be Baldur's Gate without ninjamances

It doesn't add any new NPCs, though. IT adds a ton of new dialogue and content for the followers in BG1. Banter, personal quests, romances, and so on. www.gibberlings3.net/bg1npc/

Well I see it's a G3 mod, so it's most likely part of the BWP, which includes if I remember correctly the tutu: www.gibberlings3.net/bg1npc/

I started SoD the other day, I'm out of Baldur's Gate and I have liked the story so far. I am a bit annoyed though that I couldn't recruit most of my previous party, so now I am on level 6 or 7 and others are on level 2-3 :/ Luckily they are leveling up pretty fast. Still it's nice to be playing this game!

It's cool that this thread for BG exist, already. In the last week I have buyed the 4 in 1 Box of Baldurs Gate (German Version). Someone in another forum told me about the BigWorld Setup to improve the game. The tool is recommend to install all BG setups and patches so I did it. Now I wanted to start the BWS, selected the modi 'minimal', created a back up and clicked on Start. The tool runs without problems till the BG2 Fixpack it stops suddenly. I can close the tool and restart the process until the same point. It always stop on BG2 Fixpack. It does not do anything anymore.

Probably a bad file. Try finding a previous version of the file and place it in your Downloads folder of the BWP. If it's detected there, it might skip the download and use the file you already have there when installing.

Finished the Siege of Dragonspear this weekend. I liked it, even though it had some stuff storywise that didn't fit that well in, imo. All in all, a very nice DLC, not brilliant but not total crap either.

Finished the game again after a 6 years pause (my undead hunter Salieru-Dei ascended to godhood). It is still an enjoyable game.

Does anyone happen to know if the bug that prevented half-orcs from romancing Viconia was fixed in EE? Heard rumors that it was, but nothing concrete.
