More casual, for me, often more sarcastic, and refreshingly profane at times. "Is everyone on this planet a lying asshole?" I was in tears.

Yeah, I agree that the emotional and casual lines delivered feel a lot more human, and down-to-earth. Casual is a goldmine of one-liners and other goodies. Never thought the Ryders would grow on me as much as they have. A pleasant surprise indeed!

I found Ryder to be more relatable than Shepard. Guess it was by design.

I am really enjoying Scott. I made him kind of goofy looking and the dialogue choices really fit him well, He's a fun kind of guy....

I am reallly enjoying Ryder and my Ryder. Verdict is still out but they could be the best RPG protagonist obviously but Ryder is nice, really nice. And I am relatin to them. Though maybe not as much as my Commander Shepard.

I love the casual responses. He definitely has more personality then Shepard. I think it has to do with the new system.

Male Ryder looks like a frat boy...so the only choice for me in 90%+ of the conversations was casual/emotional.
Shepard is older and career military, professional suits him better.

I gotta say a lot of people are commenting on how the Emotional/ Casual lines are adding a lot of humanity to Ryder...and I agree...but generally speaking the professional/ logical lines haven't been too shabby either. My first Ryder is kind of an idealistic scientist so it is really nice and adds a nice balance even though perhaps 80 % of her dialog is casual/ emotional she can sometimes switch on the 'logical' part of her brain and make a smart sounding comment. Adds a lot of depth to her overall performance. A depth and nuance that probably has not exisisted in a BioWare protag since Shepard in ME 2. I mean as much as I liked Hawke he had about as much nuance as a freight trane.

It showed how much of each you took, but didn't have to max one for the best dialogue.

Fully agree. Scott Ryder is my favorite part of this game.
He is witty, charming, and goofy when he needs to be. Shepard on the other hand just felt like a square peg a lot of the time.
I really like the fact that Ryder is the opposite of Shepard too - he's not a man with a huge reputation & a hero's backstory. He's quite... modest and average, and that lends a really neat layer to his character.
My only complaint with Ryder, is that you can't really be mean / rude / ruthless with him. Even the more negatively-phrased dialogue options seem to be quite light and conservative.

I agree. The dialog delivery is pretty on point, though there are times when I wish male Ryder would show more frustration in his responses. Dude is too damn level headed.

Yes, I killed her.

I like Ryder far more than Shepard. Shep was kind of a stiff and too proper in some scenes with ME3 making it worse with the amount of autodialog and railroading of responses. Ryder's also funnier and more relatable with some of the funniest lines on the series.

Ryder fits perfectly in this tone - which is more hopeful, relaxed, and intriguing.

I think Ryder is a lot better than Shepard. We just need to attain the same level of respect and accomplishments.
If this game is their origin story, I dare say we have acquired more respect than Shepard in their background (sole survivor/war hero/ruthless).
Let's hope we can continue with Pathfinder Ryder as protagonist in the next installments...

nice is the word isn't it. the only choice you ever have is casual nice and professional nice. for all the amusing one liners there is no getting around the fact that this makes ryder far more one dimensional than shepard ever was. Don't take this as a hater comment hell i'm 70+ hours in now and still having a blast but let's be objective, casual nice, professional nice, that's it, ain't good, shepard had more range than that.

I like Ryder because he/she is more of set character and have some good personality going. The writing may be a bit to lighthearted at times, but i feel way more connected than i did with Shep.

I love my Ryder, way more than Shepard. Ryder feels like an actual human being tbh. Kind of reminds me of playing sarcastic Hawke in Dragon Age 2.

Couldn't agree more with this. Yeah, if people can enjoy Ryder, that's great. I do too, but there's literally only one way to play them. I love RPing, but it will never be possible with Ryder because they're so one-sided. Professional Ryder clashes with autodialogue and the humour that's shoved in it, so I guess a funny/sassy Ryder is the only way it would feel natural with the tone of the game. Shepard's backstories alone are more varied and it has a lot more replay value in terms of that and because of how different Shepard can feel. If they continue into a MEA trilogy with Ryder, I seriously hope there's more dialogue tones next time. 4 times "nice" just doesn't cut it in a Bioware game. It's terrible.

Hm, I like Sara Ryder and I like her lines overall but I also think that Jennifer Hale did a fantastic job as Shepard and that she gave far more meaning and emotional inflection to Shepards lines, what I think is the best aspect is that they've succeeded in not carbon copying Shepard and renaming him/her Pathfinder.
The Ryders ever differ, from what I hear, in their delivery and word choice between Scott and Sara which I think is really neat. All in all, I wouldnt pick a winner but I'm glad we have the Ryders and their, perhaps more upbeat, view of things.

First post, just to chime in about how I absolutely fell in love with casual/emotional Scott Ryder from pretty much the start. It's so refreshing to have a protagonist who is unrelentingly optimistic and upbeat, and a science nerd to boot. Taylorson's voice acting is mostly on point and some of the casual one liners are absolutely golden. The one after the Kett Cardinal boss fight had me in stitches for a minute. And the prerendered face is cute, so what's not to like? As much as I love Jennifer Hale's renegade FemShep, I'm glad Bioware gave us a different and more relatable player character this time around.

My feeling at present is that the different starting points of Shepherd and Ryder make the tones quite acceptable.
Shepherd - experienced military background from the start, therefore capable of dealing with people forcefully.
Ryder - not expecting to be more than a subordinate to the pathfinder, so lacking experience of command.
Also, there seems to be a greater disparity in the characters of the team which is being built, so more need to work at getting everyone singing from the same hymnbook, so a less abrasive approach seems quite natural.
I will be interested to see how Ryder's personality is described later on because I have been choosing options from all four categories, depending on mood and situation (but not haircut).
