So I powered through the remainder of Black Flag yesterday. Some quibbles aside, the final mission was fun, and the bittersweet ending felt right for the game. The modern-day elements were a real mixed bag though. Apart from the two dramatic reveals towards the end, and the nice office spaces, the hacking minigames largely felt like a waste of time for what they yielded. Maybe if you were a big Abstergo/Templar lore fan...? There were big prose dumps and long audio logs which, honestly, I couldn't have cared less about. And since I hadn't played AC1 or AC2, much of it was irrelevant to me anyway. So I never finished all of them. Mary Read tho... I thought they had fleshed out the Sage/Pirate Roberts pretty well in the game. He was an interesting character with a decent story arc. But few of the other principle antagonists were anywhere near as interesting. And then it's... bang-bang-bang-kill-everyone at the end. And while I thought Kenway was a decent enough protag, it's a bit disappointing all his character development happens at the end.

And just some other random thoughts on Black Flag... I love the Isu sites in AC and they do a good job of both integrating those scifi elements and contrasting them with the rest of the game. And while I can see how a Crystal Skull makes sense for a pirate game, they don't fit in with the Isu tech I've seen in other games. There's a clash of styles happening here. I thought the shape-shifting room with the lethal forcefields was neat, but the last mission of the game is the worst time to introduce new camera angles and awkwardly change traversal. Especially since they had never done that in any previous mission and your muscle-memory can betray you. This jump seems innocuous, but... And have you noticed how many of your assassination targets will start monologuing as you get close to them? And how many you wind up having to kill in mid-monologue as they move into your killzone? Personally, I thought they should have been cutscenes, and then they can just inanely bark afterwords as you approach to kill them. I feel like I've missed out on a lot of dialogue because of that... Or how if you kill a target surrounded by his allies, you never know if the game is going time skip to someplace safe, or leave you there to fight your way out? And I've covered some of the pacing/plot holes already, but Torres finding the Observatory was another. That was never explained AFAIK, and maybe it was something lost in development triage. The entire final mission was irrelevant anyway. Kenway already had the McGuffin, and his reasoning that he wanted to rub Torres' face with that fact was just... stupid. And seeing that Torres had activated the Isu defense systems, Kenway could have just broken out the popcorn, waved the skull at him from across the room, then watch as the lot of 'em got vaporized. But no... Another one was how Kenway, still a wanted pirate, could just return to England. It feels like a number of scenes were cut/reworked towards the end. The bittersweet ending credits was a nice touch though...

LOL yeah they are, especially Kenway!!!!!!!! Do you like Adewale enough to play his DLC Freedom Cry? Ade arguably had the best VA in the game. I'll see if I want to get into the DLC in a few days. I just wrapped up the main game and I'm a bit burnt out on it at the moment. I love Ezio (especially his boots which I am wearing in Odyssey ) and the history and settings but I find the combat and gameplay mechanics a chore. Well worth playing once though to get the history and background. I started with AC3 which I really liked even though it wasn't that popular and even jumping back from that to AC2+Brotherhood+ Revelations was a struggle. I have the AC3 Remasterd as well, though I've only played a partway through before jumping on to something else. I think I might actually finish that first then before trying AC2. TBH I loved Ade but the DLC didn't grab me that much but then again some people really loved it. Are you going to play Unity and Syndicate? Doing AC3 then playing AC Rogue, then Unity and Syndicate would be a good way to di it even though it is out of release order as AC3 has story and characters that tie into AC Rogue and Rogue leads into Unity nicely. Literally the end of Rogue is the start of Unity IIRC. AC3 has seafaring stuff as does Rogue so you'll at least be familiar with that but Rogue you play from the Templar perspective.

Yeah I thought the ending was good and agree he seemed to learn a lot at the end but I guess that he learnt a lot all the way through but it was realised on screen at the end. Yeah the Mary Read stuff was a kick in the guts I was so disappointed there wasn't away to save her and I was disappointed Anne Bonnie didn't get together with Edward, she was also a bit of a sad story in the end. The daughter was a nice touch though. How good is that ISU Armour even if you do get it late in the game??

The bittersweet ending credits was a nice touch though... I haven't played it for ages but the skull I think there was a specific reasoning behind that. God I had forgotten those stupid phasing walls etc. Kenway's main reason for finding the Observatory was always to find the loot until the end where he just wanted to kill Torres and also redeem himself to the Assassins (for betraying them early on) and showing he was now committed to the cause by destroying or locking it down I thought. The issue with enemies delivering a speech in combat is still an issue today, even in ACOD I have had to stop myself fighting sometimes to hear out a dialogue although I do also remember Elpenor lying there dead delivering a long speech. I know the English government offered amnesties for the pirates early on but I think Kenway either bought one or was offered one and thus able to return to England. In one of the later games, maybe Syndicate you get to go to Edward's house for a mission to find some information. The credits were great.

How good is that ISU Armour even if you do get it late in the game?? Honestly, I didn't have it long enough to really put it to the test. It implied it was good against bullets. But with all the tranq/berserk darts and smoke bombs I rarely got into the mix late game.

Actually, the way Kenway phrased it - he really did just want to rub Torres' face with the fact he had the skull. I don't recall him mentioning anything about returning the skull, or shutting down the Observatory at the start of the mission. Though after killing Torres there is a cutscene of him doing that with the aid of the other assassin. The issue with enemies delivering a speech in combat is still an issue today, even in ACOD I have had to stop myself fighting sometimes to hear out a dialogue although I do also remember Elpenor lying there dead delivering a long speech. I kinda wonder if I had just blocked some of that out from the other games. I definitely noticed it in this game. I know the English government offered amnesties for the pirates early on but I think Kenway either bought one or was offered one and thus able to return to England. In one of the later games, maybe Syndicate you get to go to Edward's house for a mission to find some information. I guess it's assumed he received amnesty somehow, but I thought that window of opportunity had long closed. I just wish they had shown it. It just feels like another plot hole, like how Torres even knew the location of the Observatory...

I guess it's assumed he received amnesty somehow, but I thought that window of opportunity had long closed. I just wish they had shown it. It just feels like another plot hole, like how Torres even knew the location of the Observatory... So just did some searching on the web and yeah the consensus is that after the death of Mary he is a broken and wallows in self misery but that he resolves to make a difference and not necessarily destroy the Observatory but make sure it is not used by the Templars by killing them. He's infused with a sense of purpose by Mary saying "I have done my part will you", whether it is just revenge or a true commitment to the Assassins is never really made clear. Killing the last of The templars (in this game) however is clearly revenge though. It's sought of implied that he "retires" to England and by that I think it is meant that he probably "bought" his way back into England, he certainly was very wealthy and accepted back into high society. Did you know his son Haytham Kenway and Grandson Connor/Ratonhnhaké:ton; are the main characters in AC3? Torres gets knowledge of The Observatory from the information that Kenway steals from Duncan Walpole (who was on his way to deliver it to Torres betraying the Assassins) and then delivers to Torres. They needed the "sage" to access the Observatory.

Good v Bad is probably debateable on both fronts but certainly incompetence/arrogance and ignorance can be attributed to the Assassins.

Hrungr meant to say to that Unity gets a bad wrap as especially on PC it was a disaster far worse than MEA from a playability perspective on release for some people, me included. However it is a beautiful game and combat and the parkour is great. Arno the protag is one of the weakest I think but the game overall I think is better than Syndicate but that is a very personal and subjective opinion.

Did you know his son Haytham Kenway and Grandson Connor/Ratonhnhaké:ton; are the main characters in AC3? Yup! That's why I'm playing them backwards. And the theatre ties the two together as well (I've played a little of the beginning of AC3 a while back). Torres gets knowledge of The Observatory from the information that Kenway steals from Duncan Walpole (who was on his way to deliver it to Torres betraying the Assassins) and then delivers to Torres. They needed the "sage" to access the Observatory. Close. Torres knew of the Observatory, and had access to it with the blood of the Sage that you get for him. But he never had the location, and spends the bulk of the game trying to find out where it is. Even after Kenway is in prison (late game), Torres tries to make a deal with Kenway - the location for his freedom. But he turns him down, and Torres never caught Roberts again.

His map was of the Observatory itself, which Kenway stole. But they had the blood of the Sage from when you bring him the glass cube, and they extract it from Roberts. They still needed Roberts to lead to them to the Observatory itself though, which is why he was imprisoned afterward (and then escaped). As I mentioned, Torres was still looking for it near endgame.

So forgot to post this yesterday but I found this weapon "The Blade of Yumminess" at a blacksmith in Persian Bay on Samos it gives 250% Damage but you cannot use you abilities and it also does 30% sword damge The Katana. But I should point out that it has a random chance to appear at any vendor. Damn to other full PT's and never saw it!!!!!!! Nice pic as usual Hrungr

Not sure the Spear of Leonidas does any damage if that's what you mean, I think it's there purely to act as the magical component that grants the magical abilities etc. and a fantastic graphical enhancement in combat. Please don't let me have been naïve enough to have missed a joke with regards to the "Hidden head spear" comment?????

Well, it's not really hidden, but you use it like one...sorta. The stealth kills in Odyssey are a lot more brutal than in the other games.

Yeah the spear is I guess like a hidden blade and you see it in some of the ability animations but not sure it does any damage except what you get for enhancements to your abilities when you level the Spear up. Yeah it is pretty brutal in its use especially when using "Fury of The Bloodline" and "Rush Assassination" which are two of my favourite abilities. The one you see in Kass's off-hand is the one you are talking about yeah? The one glowing on her back?
