If the Inquisitor is a mage, there is a moment when Cullen says the fact that he wouldn't have looked at her in his mage hating days sickens him.
I must say, that is much better than Fenris' "I will always hate mages, but I'm making an exception for you" thing.

I must say, that is much better than Fenris' "I will always hate mages, but I'm making an exception for you" thing. I agree, but for Fenris (and lot of DA2 in general) I always just head canon it away as Varric's story telling it accounts for all the plot holes and inconsistencies with character appearances, their stories and all that (that's my opinion anyway)
plus for Fenris I think it's more 'I'll tolerate them but will never fully trust them' he says as much to Hawke in his Act 3 Questioning Beliefs "for every mage such as you, there's a dozen more out there to weak to use their powers responsibly. Them I fear, as should you, as should anyone" (or something like that, been a while since I played the quest) I think it'd be hilarious if one of his children would be a mage though (no idea about the artist though) though on Cullen's words, he's also very tender and reassuring if a mage Inquisitor questions herself for being a mage some people see it as putting Cullen on the spot by using those options, but giving Cullen's past I personally think it's a realistic portrayal

In rivalry he just says, that perhaps time to get rid of the poison of hatred he swallowed for years.
Perhaps Cullen just needs a hard rivalry with a mage Trevelyan. Not like with Fenris, because Fenris was never a mage hunter and a right hand of a mage killer, but harder. What questions everything about the Circles – and questiones his role. But Trevelyan can't do it – while Hawke's able to bring back Fenris to his torturer. Trevelyan doesn't have a word against his "arguments". Trevelyan can't show his/her outrage about Maddox and the other mages who made Tranquil by Meredith –with Cullen's assistance.
Cullen's romance can be more interesting if a mage Inquisitor would able to question him, not just cuddle him. It should be an opportunity – and not only in romance.

Cullen doesn't need to be questioned. He knows that what he did was wrong. I think what you're really asking for is the option to tell him you're mad about it and can't forgive him.

Cullen doesn't need to be questioned. He knows that what he did was wrong. I think what you're really asking for is the option to tell him you're mad about it and can't forgive him. No. He tells, that "Knight-Commander Merdith's methods were harsh, but kept people safe". He still thinks, she was acceptable somehow.
Can you forgive, if someone doesn't ask for forgiving? I don't deny the possibility, but still hard. And Trevelyan doesn't get a chance to question him. And if s/he tries it, s/he doesn't get a proper answer.

Can Lavellan learn the truth about vallaslin without romancing Solas? I wonder that myself maybe the Well of Sorrows tells her (if she drank from it)?
For my personal Lavellan I'm not sure yet how she'd react to finding out the truth, depending on how and when it is revealed to her

Can Lavellan learn the truth about vallaslin without romancing Solas? Sort of, but only in Trespasser.
When studying the mural of Fen'Harel removing the vallaslin from ancient elven slaves on the island temple, male Lavellans or those that didn't romance Solas will have the same comment that "perhaps the markings used to mean something different back then" as other Inquisitors.
They never actually say it out loud, but from the various bits of information found in the temple, I'd say that they definitely figured it out. One of the door murals even refers to Fen'Harel as removing "brands" from freed slaves, so combined with the mural on the wall, that should be all that's needed for them to put the pieces together.
To be fair, I wouldn't blame them if they were still a little in denial.
In the space of a few hours, learning that the "Creators" were actually powerful mage lords, who brainwashed their followers into worshipping them as gods and enslaved their own people, would be a lot to take in all at once. Especially the realisation that Lavellan and their people have been deliberately marking themselves as "slaves" this entire time and that the gods they thought they were venerating, were the very ones that enslaved their ancestors.
I'm honestly amazed they managed to keep their composure.

maybe Lavellan is more of a 'scream on the inside' kind of person? still not entirely sure how my own Lavellan is going to react (I've yet to play Trespasser, and I'll save my head canon reaction for her until then)
I also wonder how much of what was in that temple is true, I mean...all we've heard so far is Solas' side of the story (and Flemeth/Mythal), what about the other 'gods'? I mean, for example...out of all of the gods, Sylaise was said to be this kind person who people willingly served there's also June, of who until now we hardly have any information aside from the fact he was an excellent craftsman (seeing as my own Lavellan has June's markings I want to know more about the man )

It feels so comforting. that scene is what sold Cullen's romance for me in the first place it's so warm and tender, I also love the hugging scene when he's praying, it's adorable with a Lavellan Inquisitor, since she's basically buried in his hug

Do you mean picking certain options during dialogue with him, or spreading out his romance scenes further apart?

I mean not picking romantic dialogue options early in the game. Wait until the Inquisitor learns that Cullen is different from other templars.

I must admit it's been a while for me since I've played Inquisition, so I can't quite remember the specific choices I picked while romancing Cullen
I do recall that playing as a mage, I picked options that were mage specific when talking to him during certain scenes some people might view that as 'putting him on the spot' because the Inquisitor doubts herself during them and the way Cullen might view her
I've seen a few vids on youtube that had people romance Cullen after completing his personal quest (Perseverance), some of the dialogue changes when you do that also depends on how you dealt with Cullen during that quest (as I recall the only way he'll actively break of a romance if he's forced to stay on lyrium without promise of helping him after the war)
