Hello there,
Had some dumb quests but this one takes the cake. So where BW lives such a act holds no penalty? A first-degree attempted murder ranges from 10 years minimum to life in prison. Then we have BW saying (in said quest that is at the start of the game) its perfectly fine, as long as you fail no harm done and you can go home. More insult is when they give the guy community service NOT because he wanted to kill the guy but because he hid the event... I mean WTH?! I found other dumb quests (like the one with the baby some already made a topic about) but this one is so ridiculous to new heights. This was a first degree attempted murder with the guys own words recorded but the only 2 options you have are "let him go" or 2 "lie and punish him for killing that guy". I was expecting a C option where I sentence him for attempted murder but nop...
Anyone had issues with this quest or is it just me?

Yep, that was my first thought as well when presented with the choice, and many others agree. It's mind-boggling, really. Bioware, please don't sacrifice basic logic for morally-grey choices

This has been brought up many times...pretty much everyone agrees it's stupid (though a few try to make excuses for it).

Yea. i still enjoyed it but don't think too much about it cause they didn't either. one can make excuses for it like Tann wanting to either sweep it under the rug or make an example out of it or the Initiative simply having other priorities so they take a black and white approach to matters for now or w/e, but Bioware Montreal got paid for it so it was their job to make sure they present it better.

Bioware's attempt on "hard choices" He either gets exile for attempted murder but since that is not an option, he gets exile for a murder he "failed" to commit - not a murder he didnt commit No way he is walking

A first-degree attempted murder ranges from 10 years minimum to life in prison. Maybe because there's no government yet in Andromeda, so nobody really care about the law? Anyway, if you do exile him; you can still meet him again in.. Kadara (forgot, I think it's Kadara) and have a small talk about the decision you've made. There's one situation in Kadara slums that get me upset too.. and it's not quest related. It's when we discover two guys are looting a recently died exile, we were given option to leave them or to interfere. Even if I choose to interfere, that annoying SAM stopped me to get involved on this thing. That's one of my WTH moment with BW new conversation. After that, I thought we will be given option to keep interfering or listen to SAM, but instead.. Ryder immediately agrees with SAM. That's my second WTH moment.

A great grey morale choice would be if that guy was one of few surviving or on the nexus remaining doctors. So that you could argue a working doctor is more important than a criminal behind bars. See Bioware, I needed 10 seconds to come up with that. It isn't that hard.

Nilken gets some sort of punishment (community service or something), if you choose to "release him". Along with Vetra bribing one of the Initiative workers (in her introduction scene, she offers a favor for neglecting one's duty for the personal gain), it makes the success of justice system on Nexus questionable at best.

The thing with Vetra was dumb, it was supposed to show us she's a wheeler-dealer....all it really showed was a straight up bribe.

Yeah, it's dumb. If the Initiative was smart they would have enlisted lawyers and judges of some kind to help in building the new society, wouldn't you think? Maybe those folks were still in stasis.

I think the logic was that it was more forgivable because the guy he was trying to kill would have gotten the whole squad killed?

The reason for the attempted murder makes the whole thing more forgivable.
In Vietnam a lot of overly reckless or idiotic squad leaders were killed by their own men with grenades. Thats were the term to ''frag'' somebody comes from, the frag grenade.

This guy did and admitted to it in that recording. beantony But enough government to sentence him for murder and for trying to hide the event by giving him community service...

Somehow this also bothered me a lot. Since it's early in the game, it made a very bad impression on the whole thing. Don't know why I find is such a big deal. Probably because the game is less 'intelligent' in general. Instead of explaining scifi stuff with nerdy theories, they just say 'space SAMagic' now.

Well, really, there aren't rules. The point of the Initiative is leaving behind the Milky Way, council space, and establishing a new society. Part of that is establishing their own government and laws because the old ones no longer apply to them.
So what you have is a situation where a bunch of people, none of whom are legal experts(it's mentioned that they haven't thawed any lawyers out yet), coming from different societies with different legal structures, the leader of whom is an accountant who's entirely out of his depth, in a crisis situation, making the rules up as they go along.
Then there are the optics of the situation, and leaders are often more concerned with optics than with results. Overturning the original ruling and retrying him for attempted murder sends the message that the leadership is incompetent(convicting a man for a crime he didn't commit) and vindictive(going after the same man for the same crime with a different charge). Then there's the efficiency angle; if you have him dead to rights on attempted murder, anyway, and the sentence is the same either way, then there's an argument that overturning the conviction and then trying him for attempted murder is a waste of time and resources while you're still in a crisis situation. There's also probably a question as to whether or not double jeopardy factors into the circumstance, because, again, no one involved is a legal expert.

No jails, no police force, no due process. I think an appropriate dialog option other than exile would've been a return to cryo.
