Hell, Ellen Ryder default looks NOTHING like the default Ryder children (and neither does Alec, by the way).

Incorrect. The reason you are wrong is because Alec Ryder's likeness is based off of the Scott presets and not the Sara presets. Here is Preset 9 Scott for evidence: As far as Preset 9 Sara being Caucasian, maybe...? I don't know if Ellen Ryder's likeness can change if you alter Sara (I didn't alter her on my first playthrough), but Preset 9 Sara somewhat resembles her mother: Moral of the story is the preset you choose for Sara will determine Alec's likeness by the same preset for Scott. Not even close. The Ellen Rider you show is Preset 5. I do not know which one Ellen is for 9, but if it is that one - it's only confirming wrong order of the presets. The point still stands that Alec Ryder's likeness is based off the corresponding preset for Scott. Thus, if you use Preset 9 Sara, it will be Preset 9 Scott that Alec looks like. Now that you've confirmed that Ellen's likeness also changes (I found a random picture of Ellen on Google images), then Preset 9 Sara must closely resemble Preset 9 Ellen. Not going to take the time to figure out what Preset 9 Ellen looks like, but father looks like son and mother looks like daughter.

Sadly Ellen does not change. I am Asian in my current playthrough and she is still the same.

I understand what you are saying - and it's a useful information many players would love to know before they roll their characters. But try to understand me as well. Please? I am saying that BW accidentally mismatched Presets 9 - either Sara had to be African, or Scott (and Alec) - Caucasian. Because right now people who choose Preset 9 Sera (was majority of the gamers playing Sara) obviously customize Scott to be Caucasian as well (twins, remember?) - taking him from another preset, and 5 minutes later they meet in game a character, that supposed to be their father but has nothing to do with your Sara and Scott look. Who is of different race, for god sake! The only thing you can do here is RP that you are adopted. The idea of forming a bond was great, but execution - as always - flawed.

I really do understand what you are saying and I do wish the execution was better. Character Creation for MEA is by far one of the most disappointing and limiting features for the game, which is a bit surprising for a BioWare game. If there was a mistake (Preset 9 Sara really doesn't look very Caucasian to me but not African either), it will be something BioWare addresses in the next two months or BioWare would have already made a remark about it being a mistake. You'd think if it merely was a mismatch, however, that it would be a quick and easy fix. My understanding, and I could be wrong, is that Alec's likeness will always be based off Scott and Ellen's likeness will always be based off of Sara. I believe that's how BioWare approached the likeness of the parents, and if that's the case you'll likely never be able to change how Alec looks, unless BioWare just allows folks to pick a preset appearance for Alec.

My non default Alec is hot af imo Funny thing is, I used the ugliest female Ryder because I figured not many would chose her, so I could pretend to myself she was unique. I wish I'd taken a screenshot of his face, but here is my female Ryder:

I concur with the commentators saying the father tends to look like Scott Ryder. It's been my experience. Not that I can complain, both have basically looked pretty good and like plausable older versions of their respective sons. So this was my first experience with the custom father to Ryder: The second experience was with an Asian Alec Ryder. He looks pretty badass IMO:

you faired better than me... That's my Ryder!Dad and the only thing in common is the female Ryder (I customized both male and female before playing). But as far as I'm concerned, it was not worth limiting the character creator for someone who has like..what...less than 5minutes of screen time? Not to mention every custom Ryder!Dad looks totally wonky.

Sadly Ellen does not change. I am Asian in my current playthrough and she is still the same. Yes, this was disappointing - my first playthrough I played a customized white male character, and she looked quite believable as mother. Started my second playhrough recently, going for a completely different kind of character, and created a very dark skinned black female. There's NO WAY she could be her mother. I could only head-cannon it so that the children were from their father's previous marriage; maybe his first wife died when the children were very young, and Alec met Ellen shortly after, so she's the only mother they've ever known. But that's just lazy. Even Dragon age II, which cut corners everywhere and was on a way too tight development schedule, managed to give you a family that resembled your customized character fairly decently.

There#s that saying of eyes being a mirror of the soul. So I always choose preset 1 wehen creating my Sara. All the other presets have far too large eyes and you can't scale them down.
So I mainly get an Asian looking Alec, who slightly reminds me a bit of a great ape in his facial features, since he's looking like the twin. Whom I designed to look like an ape, which is easier done than to actually create an appealing look.

Both my Ryders are preset 4 too and I got the same Alec. All three are Asian, so I don't see the problem. Other than this Alec being not very handsome. But all except the default look meh tbh.
And mommy Ryder is not Asian. I would be totally cool with that because my Scott looks like he's got Caucasian mixed in anyway. He's got blue eyes. Sara's eyes are purple. Problem is Alec's eyes are based on Scott. So both of them have blue eyes. Aaaand their goes my head canon that Scott got his eye color from his mom.... *sigh*

It's not so funny, all this, considering they nerfed the CC so that our dad would resemble our characters.
For the 5 minutes we see him, that is. And it totally makes no sense how they generated some of the dads, esp #9, when the kids don't look like him. Ninja much? (looking at Manveer Heir on this one)

Yeah I wouldn't be bothered much at all by the family resemblance issues if they didn't restrict the CC for it.
Looks like it's not working any better than it did in DA2 where we got a full CC at least. THAT is the really frustrating thing, I agree.
So much in this game is good idea/bad implementation.

It seems no matter what, this is what happens:
Your preset Sara will always have an Alec that matches the preset Scott that goes with your Sara (preset 5 Sara will have a preset 5 Alec that looks like preset 5 Scott, but a preset 7 Scott will not change Alec unless Scott is your PC), and your Sara's eye-color will match Alec's eyes.

No, my Alec and my Scott (PC) have the same eye color. So maybe eye color depends on the protagonist Ryder?
Some weird ass system behind the family resemblance in any case.

Who doesn't look related is you and your 'sister'. I was afraid I was the only white Ryder twins adopted by a black guy. Wow, Bioware. Words. Dad came out great compared to mine. My Dad looked like he was from west Africa. I thought, hmm... how did Bioware come to that conclusion? I meet Mom and I'm still figuring out how Bioware came up with the conclusion. I was adopted.

Used default Ryder family for first 2 playthroughs. For the 3rd one I decided to go custom asian. Made the most perfect custom Scott ever I am super happy with. Then I picked the hottest supermodel sister for him possible from Mass Effect Archives. Then I started NG+ and went to meet the dad: I mean sure, he looks asian like the twins I carefully created but there's no focking way my supermodel siblings are genetically related to that ugly dude lol, Ellen Ryder definitely has more secrets than she's admitting EDIT: oh fine, made pics My stunning Scott Miss Universe sister waiting in cryo The "alleged" dad you faired better than me... LOL I'm pretty sure they were adopted.

I actually really like preset 5's corresponding setting. I could see this guy and Ellen Ryder having a kid that looks what I roll with.
