Okay hear me out her ladies and gents.
Having profiles reminds me of what I like to call the Mod Dilemma.
I love to mod games. I have many games modded to the hilt. BUT I always keep one vanilla game and the software means to turn on and off mods for each so as to enjoy the original game as it was meant to be played.
When you play a game you agonize over your build because you know that you are stuck with that build for the next x amount of hours. You learn to live within the limitations of that build and make the most of it, you carefully choose squadmates to compliment your build for whatever battle you think you'll be getting into next. And you triumph through you smart choices.
But throughout the game you often wish "if I only had that one power!" Let's say Warp for instance in ME2. I always felt I needed to bring Miranda because warp AND overload is just the bomb.
Let's use Skyrim for an example as well.
As you play Skyrim many of us say to ourselves "I wish I could do this, or have that" But you are loving the game as it is, you just wish.
So you sooner or later you mod the living hell out of it, and like a kid in a candy store it's the greatest thing in the world! You have everything you could ever want.
But at what cost? You lose a lot of the drive, that motivation that pushed you toward certain goals, getting Nightingale armor, or leveling up smithing. But now you have it all and once the MOD RUSH is over you find yourself missing the vanilla version. And as you become a mature modder you learn to keep the modding more focused and lean with just certain quality mods that enhance but don't ruin gameplay.
So these restrictions in vanilla games help us to enjoy the game, provide challenge, motivation and in games like the MET replay value to try different builds.
But now enter PROFILES. I have it all, I can do it all. I have a level 84 character and I can do whatever I want. heck I don't even NEED any squadmates, at all esp with the dialogue bug. And where is the replay value of say the MET to try out every class? So I am in the "mod dilemma' I want it all except, I don't.
Do you think that the profiles were in some ways a mistake? Do you think that they, in the long run downgrade the enjoyable factor? What is your take on profiles?

I love profiles. Its one of the neatest things that they have come out with since the inception of the game. I always felt Mass Effects class system was a bit restricting and limited. Certain powers I wanted with certain Shepard's to enhance role playing but the game was like 'uh huh, not happening.'

I don't see them doing away with profiles. That being said, I love profiles as they keep your character flexible an adaptive to the situation.

Not really. I only ever play soldier as a class for single player. I never had much of an interest in the others, and that was the case for a majority of players in the original trilogy. I'll show the statistics just for ME3 below: You have control over what builds you decide to roll and how you decide to play the game. It's up to you if you want to do New Game + or not. I certainly never did it in any of the games other than ME1. The only reason I did it in that game was to hit the level cap, get the achievement, and beat it on Insanity, since it wasn't unlocked upon your first playthrough. I've already begun my second playthrough of MEA, and I never did that with ME2 or ME3 since I hit max level with an imported character. I never cared to try another class (did that in multiplayer) and I didn't care to do a Renegade run (could never take the dialogue seriously). Reasonable minds may differ, but I'm glad the profile system is here to stay. It opens up a lot more opportunities, flexibility, and player choice to use than we ever had before.

I never once switched profiles, I'm 110+ hours in, level 70+, and on my second playthrough. It's a badly implemented mechanic made worse by limiting me to 3 skills (even though the wheel is still in the game).

I don't see profiles as the mod situation. In all my SP time, I have never switched from the Infiltrator profile. Just because it is there doesn't mean you have to switch profiles. All, you have to do is treat it like a ME3 class with customizable skills.

It's a badly implemented mechanic made worse by limiting me to 3 skills (even though the wheel is still in the game). This pretty much. The game is never challenging enough where you feel like you -have- to swap to another profile to be successful. Soliders and Vanguards can chug along just fine through anything and while the other profiles don't feel as well rounded they get the job done. Enemy variety could've helped with this, different tactics or shields/barriers, weapon types... etc... that would need the specific bonuses of certain profiles to counter. But even that would've required making profile swapping as simple and locked in as weapon swapping is now. That or -vastly- expand the number of available ability slots. But, ofc, that wouldn't work well for console players. And that's not even touching how redundant it makes your squad mates.

Which was quite a delightful surprise when I found out about it earlier in the game. Theoretically you could run as a Soldier with three biotic powers if you so chose. The choice...and the consquences...are up to the player.

I like the profiles, but I would get rid of the skills resetting to cooldown upon switching. Or allow for us to reduce that time significantly, anyway.
adrenaline fusion mod can counter this at the moment, but not fully.

They are a mistake as im now basically restricted to 3 bloody slots when i had 8+ before. Switching favourites is a terrible mechanic instead keep the passive profiles but get rid of favourites system and give me my 12 skill slots at one go instead. I like the passive profiles but do not like 3x4 skill slot system and that has got go as it kills entire flow of having more powers.
I think many confuse the profiles with the favourites system (which universally sucks) as most hate the 3 slot limitation and would like it if that had all slots available instead.

They are no use to me. People say it allows to adapt to different enemies, but what for? If I want game to be easy I'll just switch difficulty, if I want challenge it only gives me more. But if people like it - whatever, it doesn't hurt me either.

No they were not a mistake. I've barely used the profiles cause I already have my dream set of skills, however the profiles are for those who play differently from how I play. If those people like the profiles I'm happy for them, the profiles doesn't bother me so I don't see a reason to complain. For me they're just a option for different play styles!

You know, I rather thought the same about the profile mechanic when the game first came out. I thought it would take away from the crafting of a team for particular missions. However, after using profiles and setting up favorites I've found it to be damned enjoyable. It adds a new dimension to the game play.

I think profiles are fine, just like mods, you dont have to use them. Personally most of my PTs will stick to the MET class types. This system gives you options....no one says you have to use them though. But I do agree about the 3 power limit...PC master race doesnt do limits

Profiles are fine. I no longer have to worry about starting a playthrough over because I'm not really having fun playing as a Sentinel/Soldier/whatever. That said, the three power limit is absolutely idiotic considering how many powers there are in this game.

It took my a while to set up my favourites effectively to make better use of the profiles but once I did I really enjoyed them. I've got a different set up for different enemy types and a set up for tough fights or when I'm getting my ass kicked.
While I miss having more than 3 powers, I'm loving the fact that each power as an individual cool down, I can pull off some amazing combos and moves. If I have to choice between the two, I prefer the individual cooldowns because a Vanguard with tactical cloak, and charge is just too much fun.

If we talk about profiles exclusively, and not about the favourites, then no, they weren't a mistake. I played a tech specialist who never put a single point in any biotic skill, and only leveled passive combat ones, but still enjoyed shifting between engineer and infiltrator depending on how I wanted to face a battle. It worries me a little though if I think in a possible post-Ryders future for ME, because they'd either scrap this system, retcon/ignore the lore or implant everyone with SAMs. The former I'm OK with, ignoring the lore like that is bad, and the latter I dread the implications.

I'm not sure about the Profile system, but I certainly love the Favourite system.
Being able to swap between four sets of powers at the push of a button, and especially once you start getting cooldown reductions for powers opens up up to 12 skills available to use on one character.
The way I am building my Ryder is to use Favourite swap frequently in combat and combo between Favourites - achieved my minimising cooldowns across the board through skill evolutions and equipment, maximising durations and overlapping some skills between Favourites (I like to use Backlash for this because it has a fast cooldown and can buy a second or two waiting for other powers to come off cooldown). While I'm still low level, eventually I intend to play like the GW2 Elementalist - Favourite/Attunement swapping to access more powers.
However I agree with Pearl that the 3 power limit per Favourite is ridiculous. Even just moving that up to 4 powers per Favourite would have gone a long way to increasing build flexibility.
So yeah, 3 Favourites with 4 powers per Favourite is better than 4 Favourites with 3 powers per Favourite. Hell they could have even just had 2 Favourites with access to 6 powers per Favourite, keeping the same overall limit of 12 but access to more simultaneously.
As for Profiles, I think the dodge modifications belong in a separate category because it is weird if you have Favourites setup between biotic, Tech/Combat and explorer that your dodge instantly changes to something else. So yeah dodge modifications should exist in a new Passive in each talent tree - Combat could have the old simple ground roll or sidestep/aerial cartwheel (for flavour and variety), Tech could have the jetpack and Biotic a choice of slide or blink, all of which you could choose between in the Passive skills and then swap in or out depending on preference.

I'd prefer the profile system if it could be coupled with an increase in ability slots. As a trade off I'd then restrict profile changes to out of combat- so you can still choose your role per encounter.
As it is I hardly use it - what i have found is that I am tending to max out 3 skills rather than experiment with several. That makes all the others largely redundant on this playthrough, which to me shows some poor design choices. If the cool down was on profile switching rather than abilities then I would be more likely to use it.

I love the profile system, personally. The 3 slot limit I'm not sold on, but I think the profile thing itself is solid. But since there's a story reason behind it, it's basically a Ryder exclusive thing, though I wonder what they'll do to it in the next game.

The profiles are fine, favourites with 3x4 is not. By lvl 60 onwards i was just wasting my skill points as they added nothing to my play style at all, since then on my abilities did not become stronger i just had more redundant abilities which could not be used due to 3x4 limitations. This trend continues into new game+ mode where even squadmates now have unspent skill points, 34 of em. This game needs a level cap of around 80, otherwise you will drown in skill points and keep adding them to stuff that provides no value whatsover. The levelling system has no joy cause the character pretty much stops growing from 60/80 depending.
Getting every skill is also redundant cause again you cannot use them. besides on the PC the 3x4 system sucks as it is unnecessarily clunky especially a when a pc player could easily have 12 skill slots from 1 to = keys.
Final advice if you got your build sorted out early and then do not need more skill points dont start new game+, rather use a tool to get resources etc and start a new game instead. That is my plan for the future using a tool to bypass the resources, research and level requirements for equipment and just start a new game. Besides game scales horribly at 80+ and beyond which is my current experience at lvl 103. Powers feel lacking, headshots other than the Isharay sniper do not kill a simple hp bar enemy.

The classes as implemented in MET contributed a lot to role-play imho. I feel like they really distinguished each Shepard I played, and the squadmates were also a reflection of the various classes.
I never felt restricted in MET - between bonus powers and the fact that I could actually control my squadmates power usage, I was gold. I'm in the middle of a second playthrough, and have switched profiles exactly once during a battle. I don't find the system desirable, and the explanation (SAM can reconfigure Ryder) is pretty hard to swallow.
Special ammo may as well not exist for as much as I use it. This consumable stuff - bleah. I really don't understand why we couldn't have ammo mods instead.
I personally would have been much happier with MEA had it simply continued to use ME3's combat mechanics - and I'd happily loose the jump jets, too.
