I had a ZX Spectrum 48K, with a 3.5" inch disk drive. Man those disks were FAST compared to tape loading! Good old color-clashing  Later I got an Amiga 600 with a 30MB harddisk! But since a lot of games weren't harddisk installable (because of copy protection shit), I still had to play a lot from disk. Damn disk-switching... Bad sectors... Yeah I know: because of 'internet' (which I didn't have until this millennium) I know there are harddisk-installers for any game you could think of. Halfway through the nineties I got myself a 486PC for cheap, with a double speed CD-ROM drive and a Soundblaster Pro compatible soundcard. A network card was installed and my family and I played a lot of LAN-multiplayer games. Good times! |

My first multiplayer game was MIDI Maze on the Atari 1040ST. It was played by connecting a bunch 1040s via MIDI cables. The player avatars were smileys because round shapes can be so easily rendered from all sides. No AI enemies, plain and simple PVP.
20 minutes load times were for tape drives. I distinctly remember using a stop watch on loading a single mission for the submarine simulator "Silent Service" by MicroProse. 22 minutes. Floppy drive load times were in the low one digits.
There weren't few girls, there were no girls at all, and one of the easiest way to make sure you didn't get a date was to mention that you are a gamer within a girl's ear shot.
My first co op binge was Warcraft 2 with a friend. Played at my place from noon to 4 AM, for one week (after all, the effort of hauling over his hardware had to be put to good use!). 2 player vs. maximum number of enemies at top difficulty. When the framerate started to stutter, you knew a big army was coming...

My first MP game was Pong or so. Split screen was an innovation - I used to play Battle Isle with a piece of cardboard so we couldn't see the moves the other would plan.

My first anything was a PC and the only game I had on it was Digger LOL  And then I got Donkey Kong later on. Then later when I got to be a teenager, me and my cousin used to play Ninja Turtles and his wish was to marry one of those turtles, I always made fun of him for that.... and then the psone and so on. I made sure to own every single console out there, I just HAD to have them haha and now I'm 37 and still playing videogames like if I was still a kid... damn the time goes by fast... |

at least your first computer wasn't a commodore amiga and BTW I know there are Amiga fanboys all over the place. It did have pretty good music and I finally did manage to get Eye of the Beholder for it, which was pretty sweet. But then it had... issues. Besides, by the time I got the (used) Amiga, PC Master Race had more or less completed establishing hegemony over the gaming market. my favorite Amiga memory  ****WORKBENCH IS CORRUPTED****

My 4 MB RAM and 40MB HDD were barely enough for anything, I had to switch down to Low-Res in Doom 2. (Which came on 8 floppy disks).
Also Norton Commander rulz. Before that, I had DIR /P

Spectrum zx Sinclair, 48kb, tape cassette... So. Much. Passion....no wait, pain... 48K Spectrum Pah !!! I had a 16K one Not just any one but one of the first 8,000 that didn't work. They were returned to be modified by hand and then re-sold. I had to wait 12 weeks after ordering mine demand was so high. Sadly it failed so I no-longer have it. Sinclair Microdrives .... anyone? anyone? |
