I have a profound appreciation for the fact that gaming has since become so normal that women can be as casual about it now as dudes are. There's an energy and perspective lady gamers bring that I think many of us appreciate. It's a better space to live in when we can all share it. And maybe there weren't as many lady gamers back then as there are now, but the ones I know now are significantly less reserved about being as open about it compared to the ones I knew then. Progress is slow as hell, but I'll take it. So we got that goin' for us. Which is nice.

My father never wanted me playing video games, but he unwittingly gave me a C64 which came with seemingly hundreds of games. Until then it had been Combat and Pac-man on an Atari 2600.

- Three words: Dirty Tracking Ball. Ahh the memories. I had totally forgotten about impromptu rushed trackball cleaning. "Aww sh!t...why is this happening now?!" :::struggles to quickly wipe off trackball and pop back into mouse::: Mouse ball maintenance was serious business back in the days before lasers and such... MEMO Re: Replacement of Mouse Balls. If a mouse fails to operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement. Mouse balls are now available as FRU (Field Replacement Units). Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel. Before proceeding, determine the type of mouse balls by examining the underside of the mouse. Domestic balls will be larger and harder than foreign balls. Ball removal procedures differ depending upon the manufacturer of the mouse. Foreign balls can be replaced using the pop off method. Domestic balls are replaced by using the twist off method. Mouse balls are not usually static sensitive. However, excessive handling can result in sudden discharge. Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse may be used immediately. It is recommended that each person have a pair of spare balls for maintaining optimum customer satisfaction. Any customer missing his balls should contact the local personnel in charge of removing and replacing these necessary items. Please keep in mind that a customer without properly working balls is an unhappy customer.

- Three words: Dirty Tracking Ball. There is the real culprit. MY first IT internship they had a bunch of old mice and every fucking one had this shit. Whenever I went to someones desk this was always a problem, one they probably had for years. Also I installed spycams under their desk facing their crotch but dont tell the fbi pls

Mmmm....telnet....the memories...like stockpiling the oddities you downloaded via command line FTP...
...but most special in my heart is IRC, the original ur-chat where everything about 'net culture was born and where we invented so much of what is now standard in the 21st century, like, for instance, all the acronyms (LOL, BRB, ROTFLMAO, etc) that kids text msg to each other and think they're cutting edge/hip. I remember doubling my modem speed to 2400 baud, hooking that awesome new speed demon to my 1990 Mac SE/30 (1MB RAM, expandable to 32MB and a huge 40MB hd), itty-bitty monochrome display, but I'd still stay up all night carousing with all the other teenage malcontents, haranguing any squares we could find on IRC who took it all too seriously.
My first non-commercial dial-up account was on a VAX machine at the local college...
Text based browsers, anyone? Lynx? We dreamed of the day when the bandwidth necessary for video would arrive.
EDIT: all of a sudden I feel so much older than when I got up this morning...

Good old times. Back in the day, we weren't addicted to mobile phones. Today, leaving your home is like getting an immediate Ascent sync kill. The SNES was released. Playing Mario Kart all day, everyday. Still my only console I've ever had, besides the game boy. Man, I'm old.^^

Question: Those that used mIRC a lot, did you ever meet the people in person? I did! and strangely enough safety wasn't that huge of a deal. Meeting a total stranger and getting into their car (because I wasn't old enough to drive) was deemed OK

I'm trying to remember how much memory my family's 1st Windows 95 PC had on it.....I think 64 MB....? are you talking about the hard drive size or getting kb and mb confused ? iirc max memory configuration on a 486sx mobo was 8mb with a total of 8 1mb sticks, but most of them were sold with 4 sticks of 128kb ram ... although I spose you could of had one of those early Pentium 1's with the 33/66mhz button on the front and been running a server mobo ... btw my first ibm type pc had a whopping 280mb hard drive and it still took 2 hours to format the drive ....

I meant the physical hard drive....if I remember right, I think it was actually 32 MBs. cuz the 1st PC game I ever played was the X-Wing game and I think its install was like almost half of that...and I recorded 1 cd to the drive and the songs ate up the rest of the memory. I don't really recall the exact details...I just remember 1 or 2 games would eat up that computers entire hard drive...and this was in 1995.

Since no one has called me out on it, I will call myself out on it (because someone has to.) The meme is a lie. 1 - Zack is using a cell phone. It would not interfere with internet usage (but would probably interfere with school life by making him look like a douche.) 2 - Answering the phone would not be an issue, because the phone wouldn't ring while someone was on the internet. I'M SORRY BSN I WILL TRY NOT TO LIE WHEN I TELL JOKES maybe in the USA but here in bligthy the 56kflex used a data connection not a standard phone line so your phone could /would ring for voice traffic and it would d/c you every time. that looks like the original handset of the analogue wireless phones a lot of the middle class had in their houses lol, that "mobile" isn't anywhere near large enough

I remember my dad bought us a 486DX2/66 with 640 MB HD in 1992. It was a very good PC at the time, but nothing out of the ordinary. When Windows 95 rolled out HDs typically had something like 6.4 GB on them, and the sizes exploded to tens of gigabytes in the next couple of years.

It was just a normal PC, I think it was a hewlett packard, we got from best buy or Comp USA back then. I remember installing my 1st PC game, it was the X-Wing star wars game and after the install, it ate up the majority of that hard drive and I copied 1 cd to that computer which ate up the rest of the memory. Im not really a PC person and computers are over my head. I am just going by what i remember. I remember I could only play 1 game then would have to un-install it to play another.
